  • This paper summarizes available literature on the optimization of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. The objective of optimization (e.g. minimum cost or weight), the design variables and the constraints considered by different studies vary widely and therefore, different optimization methods have been employed to provide the optimal design of RC beams, whether as isolated structural components or as part of a structural frame. The review of literature suggests that nonlinear deterministic approaches can be efficiently employed to provide optimal design of RC beams, given the small number of variables. This paper also presents spreadsheet implementation of cost optimization of RC beams in the familiar MS Excel environment to illustrate the efficiency of the exhaustive enumeration method for such small discrete search spaces and to promote its use by engineers and researchers. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is performed on the contribution of various design parameters to the variability of the overall cost of RC beams.

  • It is well known that consumer's quality perception is strongly affected by price. Higher priced products tend to be perceived to have better quality than lower priced products although the objective product quality is the same. However, it is less known the process through which quality perception is affected by price cues. The existing literature suggests three potential hypotheses (i.e., the selectiveprocessing hypothesis, the selective interpretation hypothesis, and the representativeness heuristic hypothesis) that explain the underlying processes of the price-induced quality perception. The current research tests among the three competing hypotheses and also examines the role of consumer knowledge as a moderating factor. An experiment was conducted to test the moderating role of the knowledge in the price-quality relationship and to investigate the underlying process. The results indicate that theinfluence of price on perceived quality differs between novices and experts. Expert consumers' quality perception is not significantly influenced by price and this finding is consistent with the extant literature. On the other hand, novice consumers' quality perception is affected by price and the tests on the underlying process support for the representativeness heuristic hypothesis. Novice consumers assess that a high-priced brand should have good product quality due to the belief that high (low) price brands represent better (worse) brand quality and such a representativeness heuristic occurs without involving selective attention or selective interpretation price-consistent information.

  • The recent advent of increasingly affordable and powerful 3D scanning devices capable of capturing high resolution range data about real-world objects and environments has fueled research into effective 3D surface reconstruction techniques for rendering the raw point cloud data produced by many of these devices into a form that would make it usable in a variety of application domains. This paper, therefore, provides an overview of the existing literature on surface reconstruction from 3D point clouds. It explains some of the basic surface reconstruction concepts, describes the various factors used to evaluate surface reconstruction methods, highlights some commonly encountered issues in dealing with the raw 3D point cloud data and delineates the tradeoffs between data resolution/accuracy and processing speed. It also categorizes the various techniques for this task and briefly analyzes their empirical evaluation results demarcating their advantages and disadvantages. The paper concludes with a cross-comparison of methods which have been evaluated on the same benchmark data sets along with a discussion of the overall trends reported in the literature. The objective is to provide an overview of the state of the art on surface reconstruction from point cloud data in order to facilitate and inspire further research in this area.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the characteristics of intervention programs for internet/smartphone addiction among adolescents through an integrative literature review. Methods: We searched MEDLINE(PubMed), CINAHL, Embase, DBpia, RISS, and KISS using a combination of "Internet or $phone^*$," "$addicti^*$," "adolescent," and "intervention or program or therapy." The searched studies were reviewed according to the criteria and an integrative literature review was conducted on the 14 selected papers published from January 1, 2013 to November 14, 2017. Results: Through the integrative review and analysis, a total of four attributes of interventions and their effects were derived. First, the number of group-focused interventions was significantly higher than that of individual-focused ones. Second, the interventions addressed various aspects of adolescents' problems while considering the complex nature of addiction problems. Third, there was a bias for region and sexual ratio. Lastly, most studies were actively conducted in community-based counseling or psychology settings. Conclusion: It is necessary to find more effective methods for addressing internet/smartphone addiction among adolescents through multidisciplinary approaches, including the consideration of various cultural and gender characteristics. This study provides a basis for developing future programs addressing addiction problems among adolescents.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to ascertain the effectiveness of forest healing therapy by analyzing researches on forest healing therapy applied to Korean adults and to confirm that forest healing therapy can be used as a therapeutic intervention program for elderly nursing or rehabilitation nursing. Methods: We searched 972 research papers on forest therapy applied to Korean adults. We reviewed appropriate 25 research papers with experimental design among them in the final analysis. Results: Forest healing therapy had physiological and psychosocial effects. First of all, it showed physiological effects to reduce stress index such as heart rate variation. Forest therapy also improved melatonin level in blood of middle-aged women with menopause and increased alpha wave in electroencephalogram and decreased lipid level and superoxide dismutase in blood. Second, forest healing therapy showed psychosocial effects to reduce depression and to improve mental health. But the effects appeared differently depending on the implementing type, period of forest healing therapy, and the professionalism of therapists. Therefore, if forest healing therapy would be applied to nursing, it should be based on its key principle, in other words, its principle of action-interaction-response of forest healing therapy. Conclusion: The results of this study could be used to develop a forest healing program as an intervention of nursing.

  • Objective: The aim of this review is to explore the latest intervention trends and effects of EMG-triggered functional electrical stimulation on the upper extremity functions in stroke patients. Design: Systematic review on clinical trials. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed to identify clinical trials evaluating the effects of EMG-triggered functional electrical stimulation (EMG-FES) and task-oriented EMG-triggered FES on the hand functions in stroke patients. Literature review was conducted with the following key words: hand function, functional electrical stimulation, task-oriented, stroke. Results: Ten clinical trials were included; 8 of them were randomized controlled trial, 1 was block-randomized, and 1 was a pre-post comparison study. A positive effect of electrical stimulation was reported in the patient groups that were treated with functional electrical stimulation combined with specific tasks, and volitional muscle contraction-triggered stimulation that was synchronized with tasks. Motor capabilities of the hand and arm were improved after the rehabilitation. Conclusions: EMG-triggered electrical stimulation may be more effective than non-triggered electrical stimulation in facilitating the hand functions in stroke patients in terms of muscle strength and voluntary muscle contraction of the paretic hand and arm. Triggered electrical stimulation can be even more effective when it is combined with specific tasks.

  • The study is to establish the role of libraries in governance. Governance is valid when private actors participate in it. Because it emphasizes the cooperation with actors in diverse sectors for solving complex problems in society. Communities as private actors with publicness help governance actualize direct democracy by participating in governance. Libraries are institutes that foster communities, but in some cases libraries are communities themselves. Therefore, the study reviews literature to prove the relationship between communities and governance and the relationship between libraries and communities. On the basis of literature reviews, the study conducts the survey to proves the relationship between libraries and governance.
