  • Objective: To develop and verify the usability of a cognitive rehabilitation system with diverse cognitive functional levels based on tangible objects for the elderly population. Methods: A study was conducted to investigate the system's strengths and weaknesses by upgrading it with responses from two groups of 15 patients and 4 occupational therapists. After undergoing three forms of training - regarding executive function, memory, and concentration for a total of 20-30 min, the participants were asked to answer a structured questionnaire about contents of the three forms of training, hardware including the tablet PC functioning as a CPU and display media and tangible objects, and satisfaction of experiential usage of the system. Results: Both groups responded that the most interesting training area was executive function while the least interesting was concentration. Six participants reported that the size of the screen of the tablet PC was inappropriate, and five responded that the size of the tool was inappropriate. All therapists and 40% of the patients responded that they were satisfied with this system. Conclusion: This system's features include easy manipulation of tangible tools for performing training tasks, easy selection of and training in cognitive areas based on users' needs, and automatic adjustment of difficulty level based on users' performance. The training environment was designed to be similar to the natural environment by using tangible objects in both hands as input devices for the system, and the system was considered as an alternative to the lack of community cognitive rehabilitation specialists.

  • This meta-analysis systematically reviewed studies on mirror therapy focused on arm and hand function in stroke patients, aiming to comprehensively assess the efficacy of mirror therapy interventions and furnish empirical support for its potential application and future development in the context of stroke rehabilitation. A rigorous search for articles published in international journals up to the year 2022 was conducted. Various assessment tools were employed to calculate effect sizes, evaluating the impact of mirror therapy on arm and hand function in stroke patients. Utilizing a random-effects model, mean effect sizes were determined, yielding a total effect size of 0.545. The effect sizes for the Brunnstrom Recovery Stage (BRS), Box and Block Test (BBT), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), and grip strength test were 0.957, 0.596, 0.490, 0.488, and 0.417, respectively. In summary, we suggest that mirror therapy engenders positive changes in functional recovery among stroke patients, establishing a foundation for its tailored clinical application based on individual subject characteristics.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was conducted to systematic review about assessment tools for Activities of Daily Living (ADL) for stroke patients. Methods: Studies tools was administered by using four electronic databases (Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane and NDSL). For the main key words,"stroke AND activities of daily living AND occupational therapy AND assessment OR evaluation OR measurement"was used. We analyzed the types and frequency of evaluation tools. In addition, the evaluation tools for activities and participation were classified based on the classification criteria of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). Results: In this study, 111 studies were analyzed and 30 assessment tools were identified. As the number of studies on stroke patients has been increased recently, the types and frequency of evaluation tools have been also increased. The most commonly used evaluation tools were Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Barthel Index (BI) and Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). In addition, according to classification based on ICF, we found that the types of assessment tools which assess participation were few. Conclusion: Although there were many kinds of assessment tools, the types of evaluation tools which were used in the research or field were very limited. Using various assessment tools, more research should be conducted to support evidence-based occupational therapy. Evaluation tools for participation also should be developed.
