Morphological and rheological properties of the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) blends were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and advanced rheometric expansion system (ARES). From the SEM results, the PMMA-PS blends showed dispersed morphology and the particle size of the dispersed phase was quite small (0.1~0.6 $\mu\textrm{m}$ compared with other immiscible polymer blends. Values of the interfacial tension of the PMMA-PS blend were obtained from the Choi-Schowalter and the Palierne emulsion models using the storage modulus of the PMMA and PS, and found to be 1.0 and 2.0 mN/m, respectively. The interfacial tension between the PMMA and PS was also calculated from the Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameter ($\chi$) and found to be from 0.98 to 1.86 mN/m depending on the molecular weight and composition. Comparing the values of the interfacial tension from the Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameter and the values measured by oscillatory rheometer, it is suggested that the interfacial tension of the PMMA-PS blend obtained from the polymer-polymer interaction parameter are in good agreement with the values obtained by rheological measurements.
This paper is concerned with a computational method for recovering a crack shape of steam generator tubes of nuclear plants. Problems on the shape identification are discussed arising in the characterization of a structural defect in a conductor using data of eddy current inspection. A surface defect on the generator tube ran be detected as a probe impedance trajectory by scanning a pancake type coil. First, a mathematical model of the inspection process is derived from the Maxwell's equation. Second, the input and output relation is given by the approximate model by virtue of the hybrid use of the finite element and boundary element method. In that model, the crack shape is characterized by the unknown coefficients of the B-spline function which approximates the crack shape geometry. Finally, a parameter estimation technique is proposed for recovering the crack shape using data from the probe coil. The computational experiments were successfully tested with the laboratory data.
Two-photon stereolithography is recognized as a promising process for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) microstructures with 100 nm resolution. Generally, beam-scanning system has been used in the conventional process of two-photon stereolithography, which is limited to the fabrication of micro-prototypes in small area of several tens micrometers. For the applications to 3D high-functional micro-devices, the fabrication area of the process is required to be enlarged. In this paper, large-area two-photon stereolithography (L-TPS) employing stage scanning system has been developed. Continuous scanning method is suggested to improve the fabrication speed and parameter study is conducted. An objective lens of high numerical aperture (N.A.) and high strength material were employed in this system. Through this work, 3D microstructures of $600*600*100\;{\mu}m$ were fabricated.
This study was aimed to study the effect of Zn content on the hyperfine parameters and the structural variation of $Ni_{1-x}Zn_xFe_2O_4$ for x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8. To achieve this, a sol-gel route was used for the preparation of samples and the obtained ferrites were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. The formation of spinel phase without any impurity peak was identified by X-ray diffraction of all the samples. Moreover, the estimated crystallite size by X-ray line broadening indicates a decrease with increasing Zn content. This result was in agreement with the scanning electron microscopy result, indicating the reduction in grain growth with further zinc substitution. The room-temperature $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra show that the hyperfine fields at both the A and B sites decreased with increasing Zn content; however, the rate of reduction is not the same for different sites. Moreover, the best fit parameter showed that the quadrupole splitting values of B site increased from the pure nickel ferrite to the sample with x = 0.8.
3-D visualization using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in a chaotic micromixer was performed as a reproduction experiment and the feasibility of 3-0 imaging technique in the microscale was confirmed. For diagonal micromixer (DM) and two types of staggered herringbone micromixers (SHM) designed by Whitesides et al., to verify the evolution of mixing, cross sectional images are reconstructed at the end of every cycle. In a DM, clockwise rotational flow motion generated by diagonal ridges placed on the floor of micromixer is observed and this motion makes the fluid commingle. On the contrary, there are two rotational flow structures in the SHM and the centers of rotation exchange their position each other every half cycle because of the V shape of ridges varying their orientation every half cycle. Local rotational flow and local extensional flow generated by the complicate ridge pattern make the flow be chaotic and accelerate the mixing of fluid. The dominant parameter that influences on the mixing characteristic of SHM is not the length of micromixer but the number of ridges under the same flow configurations.

PURPOSE. The aim of this in vitro study was to investigate the accuracy (trueness and precision) of five intraoral scanners (IOS) using a novel reference model for standardized performance evaluation. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Five IOSs (Medit i500, Omnicam, Primescan, Trios 3, Trios 4) were used to digitize the reference model, which represented a simplified full-arch situation with four abutment teeth. Each IOS was used five times by an experienced operator, resulting in 25 STL (Standard Tessellation Language) files. STL data were imported into 3D software (Final Surface®) and examined for inter- and intra-group analyses. Deviations in the parameter matching error were calculated. ANOVA F-test and Kruskal-Wallis test were applied for inter-group comparisons (α = .05); and the coefficient of variation (CV) was calculated for intra-group comparisons (in % ± SD). RESULTS. Primescan (matching error value: 0.015), Trios 3 (0.016), and Trios 4 (0.018) revealed comparable results with significantly higher accuracy compared to Medit i500 (0.035) and Omnicam (0.028) (P < .001). For intra-group comparison, Trios 4 demonstrated the most homogenous results (CV 15.8%). CONCLUSION. The novel reference model investigated in this study can be used to assess the performance of dental scanning technologies in the daily routine setting and in research settings.
A new Rockwell hardness (HRC) model using a volumetric parameter by a least square and fractal interpolation method is suggested. The results are also investigated in comparison to real measured hardness data. For this purpose, the measurement of an indented volume is performed using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), and the captured height encoded image (HEI) is used as an original surface for the calculation of the indented volume. After configuring the surface, the constructed volume is calculated and used as an independent variable for HRC hardness modeling. The hardness model is established using an experimental modeling technique involving a least square algorithm and fractal interpolating model, and this suggested model can be used to reliably predict the Rockwell hardness. These techniques can also be applied to the modeling of the Brinnell and Vickers hardnesses using a volumetric variable.
A scanning electron microscope(SEM) is a system that visualizes complex surface features. The resolution of SEM is affected by each of equipment components. In this study, we examined the effects of the four factors including the beam current, magnification, voltage and working distance. A statistical analysis was conducted to investigate the main and interaction effects. For a systematic characterization, a $2^4$ full factorial experiment was conducted. The $R^2$ of constructed statistical model was 88.9%. The main effect revealed that the current and working distance are dominant factors. Of the interactions, those between the current and voltage yielded the highest interaction. 3D plots generated from the model were used to explore various parameter effects.
