  • Recently a number of social surveys on community response to environmental noises have been conducted. Since standardized noise annoyance scales were needed to compare the results from various areas, ICBEN(International Commission on Biological of Noise) Team 6 planned a international joint study and constructed comparable standardized noise annoyance scales using the same method. In Korea the survey was conducted in four areas such as Seoul, Taejon, Taegu and Kwangju. About 100 subjects participated in each area approximately. The 21 adverbs were first in the early survey, and five verbal annoyance modifiers were finally constructed as follows;. 1 (Jeonhyo), 2 (Jokm), 3 (Bikyojerk), 4 (Ajoo), 5 (Umcheongnage)

Dealing with gravity on galactic scales

  • I present a simple scheme for the treatment of gravitational interactions on galactic scales. In analogy with known mechanisms of quantum field theory, I assume ad hoc that gravitation is mediated by virtual exchange particles - gravitons - with very small but non-zero masses. The scheme predicts the asymptotic flattening of galactic rotation curves, the Tully-Fisher/Faber-Jackson relations, the mass discrepancy-acceleration relation of galaxies, and the surface brightness-acceleration relation of galaxies correctly; additional (dark) mass components are not required. The well-established empirical scaling laws of Modified Newtonian Dynamics follow naturally from the model. The scheme I present is not a consistent theory of gravitation; rather, it is a toy model providing a convenient scaling law that simplifies the description of gravity on galactic scales.

Characterizing Co-movements between Indian and Emerging Asian Equity Markets through Wavelet Multi-Scale Analysis

  • Multi-scale representations are effective in characterising the time-frequency characteristics of financial return series. They have the capability to reveal the properties not evident with typical time domain analysis. Given the aforesaid, this study derives crucial insights from multi scale analysis to investigate the co-movements between Indian and emerging Asian equity markets using wavelet correlation and wavelet coherence measures. It is reported that the Indian equity market is strongly integrated with Asian equity markets at lower frequency scales and relatively less blended at higher frequencies. On the other hand the results from cross correlations suggest that the lead-lag relationship becomes substantial as we turn to lower frequency scales and finally, wavelet coherence demonstrates that this correlation eventually grows strong in the interim of the crises period at lower frequency scales. Overall the findings are relevant and have strong policy and practical implications.

  • The purpose of this paper is to establish some sufficient conditions for oscillation of solutions of the second-order functional dynamic equation of Emden-Fowler type $\[a(t)x^{\Delta}(t)\]^{\Delta}+p(t)|x^{\gamma}(\tau(t))|\|x^{\Delta}(t)\|^{1-\gamma}$ $sgnx(\tau(t))=0$, $t\;{\geq}\;t_0$, on a time scale $\mathbb{T}$, where ${\gamma}\;{\in}\;(0,\;1]$, a, p and $\tau$ are positive rd-continuous functions defined on $\mathbb{T}$, and $lim_{t{\rightarrow}{\infty}}\;{\tau}(t)\;=\;\infty$. Our results include some previously obtained results for differential equations when $\mathbb{T}=\mathbb{R}$. When $\mathbb{T}=\mathbb{N}$ and $\mathbb{T}=q^{\mathbb{N}_0}=\{q^t\;:\;t\;{\in}\;\mathbb{N}_0\}$ where q > 1, the results are essentially new for difference and q-difference equations and can be applied on different types of time scales. Some examples are worked out to demonstrate the main results.

  • Nonlinear vibrations of an Euler-Bernoulli beam resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation are discussed. In search of approximate analytical solutions, the classical multiple scales (MS) and the multiple scales Lindstedt Poincare (MSLP) methods are used. The case of primary resonance is investigated. Amplitude and phase modulation equations are obtained. Steady state solutions are considered. Frequency response curves obtained by both methods are contrasted with each other with respect to the effect of various physical parameters. For weakly nonlinear systems, MS and MSLP solutions are in good agreement. For strong hardening nonlinearities, MSLP solutions exhibit the usual jump phenomena whereas MS solutions are not reliable producing backward curves which are unphysical.

  • Scales, accumulated on semiconductor equipment parts during device fabrication processes, often lower equipment lifetime and production yields. Thus, many equipments parts have be cleaned regularly. In this study, an attempt to establish an effective process for the removal of scales on the sidewall of collimators in the chamber of sputter is made. The EDX analysis revealed that the scales are composed of Ti and TiN with the colummar structure. It was found that the heat-treatment at 700 for 1 min. after the oxide removal in the HF solution, and then etching in the HNO3 : H2SO4 : H2O =4:2:4 solution for 5.5 hrs at 67 was the most effective process for the scale removal.

MHD turbulence in expanding/collapsing media

  • We investigate the driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence by including the effect of the expansion and collapse of background medium. The main goal is to quantify the evolution and saturation of the strength and characteristic length scales of magnetic fields in expanding and collapsing media. Our findings are as follows. First, with the expansion and collapse of background medium, the time evolution of the magnetic and kinetic energy densities depends on the nature of forcing as well as the rate of expansion and collapse. Second, at scales close to the energy injection (or driving) scale, the slope of magnetic field power spectrum shallows with expansion but steepens with collapse. Third, various characteristic length scales, relative to the energy injection scale, decrease with expansion but increase with collapse. We discuss the astrophysical implications of our results.

  • Functional surfaces in nature have been continuously observed because of their ability to adapt to the environment. To this end, methods such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been widely used, and their wetting functions have been characterized via environmental SEM. We investigated the superhydrophobic hairy leaves of Pelargonium tomentosum, i.e., peppermint-scented geranium. Their surface features and wettability were studied at multiple-scales, i.e., macro-, micro-, and sub-micro scales. The surfaces of the investigated leaves showed superhydrophobicity at the macro-, and micro-scales. The wetting or condensing behavior was studied for molecule-size water vapors, which easily adhered to the hairy surface owing to their significantly lower size in comparison to that of the surface.

  • Dynamic thermal rating (DTR) system is an effective method to improve the capacity of existing overhead line. According to the methodology based on CIGRE (International Council on Large Electric systems) standard, ampacity values under steady-state heating balance can be calculated from ambient environmental conditions. In this study, simulation analysis of relations between parameters and ampacity is described as functional dependence, which can provide an effective basis for the design and research of overhead transmission lines. The simulation of ampacity variation in different rating scales is described in this paper, which are determined from real-time meteorological data and conductor state parameters. To test the performance of DTR in different rating scales, capacity improvement and risk level are presented. And the experimental results show that the capacity of transmission line by using DTR has significant improvement, with low probability of risk. The information of this study has an important reference value to the operation management of power grid.

Neighborhood Correlation Image Analysis for Change Detection Using Different Spatial Resolution Imagery

  • The characteristics of neighborhood correlation images for change detection were explored at different spatial resolution scales. Bi-temporal QuickBird datasets of Las Vegas, NV were used for the high spatial resolution image analysis, while bi-temporal Landsat $TM/ETM^{+}$ datasets of Suwon, South Korea were used for the mid spatial resolution analysis. The neighborhood correlation images consisting of three variables (correlation, slope, and intercept) were evaluated and compared between the two scales for change detection. The neighborhood correlation images created using the Landsat datasets resulted in somewhat different patterns from those using the QuickBird high spatial resolution imagery due to several reasons such as the impact of mixed pixels. Then, automated binary change detection was also performed using the single and multiple neighborhood correlation image variables for both spatial resolution image scales.
