Numerous devices exist for reducing or eliminating seismic damage to structures. These include passive dampers, semi-active dampers, and active control devices. The performance of structural systems with these devices has often been evaluated using numerical simulations. Experiments on structural systems with these devices, particularly at large-scale, are lacking. This paper describes a real-time hybrid testing facility that has been developed at the Lehigh University NEES Equipment Site. The facility enables real-time large-scale experiments to be performed on structural systems with rate-dependent devices, thereby permitting a more complete evaluation of the seismic performance of the devices and their effectiveness in seismic hazard reduction. The hardware and integrated control architecture for hybrid testing developed at the facility are presented. An application involving the use of passive elastomeric dampers in a three story moment resisting frame subjected to earthquake ground motions is presented. The experiment focused on a test structure consisting of the damper and diagonal bracing, which was coupled to a nonlinear analytical model of the remaining part of the structure (i.e., the moment resisting frame). A tracking indictor is used to track the actuator ability to achieve the command displacement during a test, enabling the quality of the test results to be assessed. An extension of the testbed to the real-time hybrid testing of smart structures with semi-active dampers is described.
Fisheries buyback programs have been implemented from 1994 in Korea, and its scale is estimated to have a value of 930 billion won, which is compounded for eight years since 1994. The paper evaluates the programs' economic and financial viability, and predicts efficient ways about how much and how long to reduce fisheries vessels so as to pursue a target biomass at MSY, For the specific purpose of the paper, aggregate fisheries stock dynamics and catch functions are specified and estimated by yearly catch and fishing effort data from 1970 to 2001, using ASPIC model and Schaefer's logistic production model. Results show that the fisheries stock in Korea has steadily declined since 1970, and that Korean fisheries overexploitation has steadily increased. Using cost-benefit analysis method, the buyback program holds the economic and financial feasibility even if the scale of buyback programs is not sufficient to avoid the downward trend in fisheries stock and harvest. The potential investment scale is predicted in several alternative scenarios using the sensitivity analysis method. The results recommend the annual reduction of 46%, 12% or 20% for the next one year, five years or three years, respectively so that the target biomass at MSY may be reached in 25 years.

The sponge city construction is being carried out in China, and how to reasonably determine the scale of the sponge city facilities is a key point that the planners and designers should seriously solve. In this paper, taking determination of the sponge city facilities in a residential building in Shenzhen as an example, the layout and scales of the rainwater tanks, raingardens, ecological roofs and permeable pavements are decided by using the volumetric method and stormwater management model (SWMM). The calculated results by the two methods are compared and analyzed. The results show that the scales of the sponge city facilities determined by the two methods are almost the same, and it means that any method can be used to determine the scale of sponge city facilities. The volumetric method is relatively simple, and it is suggested to use to determine the scale of sponge city facilities during planning stage. While SWMM is more complex and requires a lot of input conditions, but it can provide the reduction effects of the sponge city facilities for rainfalls with different recurrence periods. Therefore, SWMM is recommended to use the calculation of the hydrological process of the sponge city facilities during the design stage.
The study interprets each of three classification models based on Bath-Tub Failure Rate (BTFR), Extreme Value Distribution (EVD) and Conjugate Bayesian Distribution (CBD). The classification model based on BTFR is analyzed by three failure patterns of decreasing, constant, or increasing which utilize systematic management strategies for reliability of time. Distribution model based on BTFR is identified using individual factors for each of three corresponding cases. First, in case of using shape parameter, the distribution based on BTFR is analyzed with a factor of component or part number. In case of using scale parameter, the distribution model based on BTFR is analyzed with a factor of time precision. Meanwhile, in case of using location parameter, the distribution model based on BTFR is analyzed with a factor of guarantee time. The classification model based on EVD is assorted into long-tailed distribution, medium-tailed distribution, and short-tailed distribution by the length of right-tail in distribution, and depended on asymptotic reliability property which signifies skewness and kurtosis of distribution curve. Furthermore, the classification model based on CBD is relied upon conjugate distribution relations between prior function, likelihood function and posterior function for dimension reduction and easy tractability under the occasion of Bayesian posterior updating.

In this research magnetic field reduction effect of each passive loop was analyzed by using the scale down models of transmission lines. This paper examined magnetic field reduction effect of the passive loop that will be applied to actual facility through the experiment, which is about double vertical transmission line and horizontal transmission line. Consequently, by confirming the fact that magnetic field reduction effect can be obtained to 50 % by passive loop without reactive compensation, we insured technology about application of passive loop. And the case of 3 turns of loop showed two times reduction effect than that of 1 turns of loop in reducing magnetic field. Vertical passive loop is more efficient than horizontal passive loop in the aspect of reducing magnetic field on double vertical transmission lines. What is more, vertical passive loop showed good effect of reducing magnetic field in a far distance as well as in a short distance.

This study presents a mathematical model for simulating the fate and transport of a reactive organic contaminant degraded through cometabolism in dual-porosity soils during the in situ bioaugmentations. To investigate the effect of dual-porosity on transport and biodegradation of organic hydrocarbons, a bimodal approach was incorporated into the model. Modified Monod kinetics and a microcolony concept [Molz et at., 1986〕 were employed to represent the effects of biodegrading microbes on the transport and biodegradation of an organic contaminant. The effect of permeability reduction due to biomass accumulation on the flow field were examined in the simulation of a hypothetical field-scale in situ bioaugmentation. Simulation results indicate that the presence of the immobile region can decrease the bioavailablity of biodegradable contaminants and that the placement of microbes and nutrients injection wells should be considered for an effective in situ bioaugmentation scheme.

In order to investigate on the effect of stabilization methods for rice paddies contaminated by heavy metals, a series of lab-scale model test was carried out by applying the characteristics of submerged Paddy soil. To perform the lab-scale model test, columns were made by acrylic with the dimension of diameter=10cm, thickness=0.5cm and were filled with soils which was contaminated were mixed with stabilization agents(lime stone 5% and steel refining slag 5% respectively). To manipulate the reduction condition, soils in the columns were submerged with distilled water. And then soil water and subsurface water in each column were sampled in the regular term and analysed the various physical and chemical properties.

Noise radiated from pile driving operation is one of major sources of community noise pollution and thus its operation method is strictly restricted by regulations. Although the drilling method is now used been commonly used in urban areas because of its activity, the benefit of low noise decreases due to high working cost. In the present work, noise characteristics of pile driving operation are carried out. Based on the study result, a low-noise pile cap for driven piles is developed in order to satisfy both the noise level restriction and the economical efficiency. Effects of pile cap are investigated by a scale model experiment, which is focused on the variation of impact force and sound pressure level. The results show a good possibility of noise reduction by an appropriately designed pile cap.
This study was conducted to examine the change of heating environment with the creation of an indoor water space. Living environments and comfort of dwellers can be improved by utilizing the physical properties of water effectively. This study focuses on the basic examination of the effect of water space and the environmental effects of water space by experiment. Two identical models were fabricated to compare the changes in indoor temperature and humidity with and without a water space. With the water space, temperature was reduced by an average of $0.55^{\circ}C$ a day and moisture content increased by an average of 4%. As a result, it was possible to obtain quantitative data on water space's temperature reduction and humidity control capacities. This study is expected to provide basic information for further studies on the effect of water spaces in various buildings.
The research described in this paper investigates the seismic behaviour of lightly reinforced concrete (RC) bearing sandwich panels, heavily conditioned by shear deformation. A numerical model has been prepared, within an open source finite element (FE) platform, to simulate the experimental response of this emerging structural system, whose squat-type geometry affects performance and failure mode. Calibration of this equivalent mechanical model, consisting of a group of regularly spaced vertical elements in combination with a layer of nonlinear springs, which represent the cyclic behaviour of concrete and steel, has been conducted by means of a series of pseudo-static cyclic tests performed on single full-scale prototypes with or without openings. Both cantilevered and fixed-end shear walls have been analyzed. After validation, this numerical procedure, including cyclic-related mechanisms, such as buckling and subsequent slippage of reinforcing re-bars, as well as concrete crushing at the base of the wall, has been used to assess the capacity of two- and three-dimensional low- to mid-rise box-type buildings and, hence, to estimate their strength reduction factors, on the basis of conventional pushover analyses.
