  • This paper introduces a clustering for Central Control System in New Distribution Automation System. There are three primary benefits to use clustering: improved availability, easier manageability and more cost-effective scalability. Availability: Clustering can automatically detect the failure of an application or server and quickly restart it on a surviving server. Clients only experience a momentary pause in service. Manageability: Clustering lets administrators quickly inspect the status of all cluster resources and easily move workload around onto different servers within a cluster. Scalability: Applications can use the Clustering services through the MSCS Application Programming Interface(API) to do dynamic load balancing and scale across multiple servers within a cluster.

  • RF 직접 추출 방법을 통해 얻은 정확한 MOSFET 기판 파라미터를 이용하여 기판저항만을 가진 BSIM4 모델은 스케일링 부정확성 때문에 넓은 영역의 게이트 길이에 적용하기에는 물리적으로 맞지 않다는 것이 증명됐다. BSIM4의 비물리적인 문제점을 제거하기 위해서 추가적인 유전체 기판 캐패시터를 가진 수정된 BSIM4 모델이 사용되었고, 이 모델의 물리적 타당성은 우수한 게이트 길이 scalability를 관찰함으로써 증명되었다.

  • This paper presents a brief overview of scalable video coding (SVC) with a focus on spatial scalability and its application to Advanced Terrestrial-DMB (AT-DMB). By adopting SVC with two spatial-layers and hierarchical modulation, AT-DMB provides standard definition (SD)-level video while maintaining compatability with the existing CIF-level video. In this paper, we suggest a layer-configuration and coding parameters of SVC which are well suit for an AT-DMB system. In order to reduce extremely large encoding time resulted by an exhaustive search of a macroblock coding mode in spatial scalability, we propose a fast mode decision method which excludes redundant modes in each layer. It utilizes the mode distribution of each layer and their correlations. Experimental results show that a simplified encoding model with the method reduces the computational complexity significantly with negligible coding loss.

  • A low complexity encoding scheme for coarse grain scalability is proposed. The proposed method exploits the statistics of residuals between current and reference blocks using the macroblock mode predicted from the previous quality layer. To test how the mode is optimal in the current layer, the statistical hypothesis testing for the variances of the residual sub-blocks is performed. The proposed method reduces the total encoding time up to 51% when three CGS scalability layers are encoded. However, the quality degradation and bit-rate increment of the each layer are negligible.

  • We propose an effective wavelength converter method using frequency shifter for photonic node, and examine the scalability of Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) networks. The ana1ysis is examined based on signal to noise ratio (SNR) for present 2.4 and 10 Gbit/s Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) networks, and next generation 2.7 and 10.8 Gbit/s Optical Transport Networks (OTN) format The proposed 100 channels GMPLS networks using optical frequency shifters are shown to be applicable to transmission network spanning over 1206 km(24 nodes) in 2.7 Gbit/s trunk networks. Transmission over more than 310 km (6 nodes) is also possible in 2.7 Gbit/s Metroporitan Area Networks(MAN).

  • In this paper, we propose a new 3D coding method for heterogeneous systems over enhanced Access Grid (e-AG) with 3D display using spatio-temporal scalability. The proposed encoder produces four bit-streams: one base layer and enhancement layer l, 2 and 3. The base layer represents a video sequence for left eye with lower spatial resolution. An enhancement layer l provides additional bit-stream needed for reproduction of frames produced in base layer with full resolution. Similarly, the enhancement layer 2 represents a video sequence for right eye with lower spatial resolution and an enhancement layer 3 provides additional bit-stream needed for reproduction of its reference pictures with full resolution. In this system, temporal resolution reduction is obtained by dropping B-frames in the receiver according to network condition. The receiver system can select the spatial and temporal resolution of video sequence with its display condition by properly combining bit-streams.

Evaluation of Cluster-Based System for the OLTP Application

  • In this paper, we have modeled and evaluated a new parallel processing system called Scalable Parallel computer Architecture based on Xbar (SPAX) for commercial applications. SMP systems are widely used as servers for commercial applications; however, they have very limited scalability. SPAX cost-effectively overcomes the SMP limitation by providing both scalability and application portability. To investigate whether the new architecture satisfies the requirements of commercial applications, we have built a system model and a workload model. The results of the simulation study show that the I/O subsystem becomes the major bottleneck. We found that SPAX can still meet the I/O requirement of the OLTP workload as it supports flexible I/O subsystem. We also investigated what will be the next most important bottleneck in SPAX and how to remove it. We found that the newly developed system network called Xcent-Net will not be a bottleneck in the I/O data path. We also show the optimal configuration that is to be considered for system tuning.

  • Recently, scalable multiprocessor systems are actively developed for general-purpose computing, which are based on distributed shared memory (DSM) architecture to boost up both programmability and scalability. In this paper, we survey and analyze cache coherence protocols in non-uniform memory access (NUMA) multiprocessor systems. In particular, it has been easily inferred that specialized hardware suitable for NUMA multiprocessor systems with commodity symmetric multiprocessors (SMPs) is highly required. The cache coherence protocol combined with specialized hardware can significantly improve the performance and scalability of NUMA multiprocessor systems, providing better programmability.

Bit Flip Reduction Schemes to Improve PCM Lifetime: A Survey

  • Recently, as the number of cores in computer systems has increased, the need for larger memory capacity has also increased. Unfortunately, dynamic random access memory (DRAM), popularly used as main memory for decades, now faces a scalability limitation. Phase change memory (PCM) is considered one of the strong alternatives to DRAM due to its advantages, such as high scalability, non-volatility, low idle power, and so on. However, since PCM suffers from short write endurance, direct use of PCM in main memory incurs a significant problem due to its short lifetime. To solve the lifetime limitation, many studies have focused on reducing the number of bit flips per write request. In this paper, we describe the PCM operating principles in detail and explore various bit flip reduction schemes. Also, we compare their performance in terms of bit reduction rate and lifetime improvement.

  • A scalable video coding (SVC) extension to the H.264/AVC standard has been developed by the Joint Video Team (JVT). SVC provides spatial, temporal and quality scalability with high coding efficiency and low complexity. SVC is now developing the extension of the first version including color format scalability. The paper proposes to remove some luminance related header and luminance coefficients when an enhancement layer adds only additional color information to its lower layer. Experimental results shows 0.6 dB PSNR gain on average in coding efficiency compared with an approach using the existing SVC standard.
