Theoretical Study on the Effects of the Withdrawal Weighting on the Performance of Resonator Type SAW Filters (공진기형 SAW 필터에 위드로월 가중법이 미치는 효과에 대한 이론적 연구)

  • This paper proposes a new improved lumped element equivalent circuit analysis method to analyze withdrawal weighted SAW resonators of irregular electrode configurations, which enables to calculate the frequency response of withdrawal weighted SAW resonators. This method has led to the derivation of Smith equivalent circuit's y-parameters for a single ground electrode and formulated the resonator's admittance by calculating the total current into an IDT assembly. To illustrate the effectiveness of the technique, this method was applied to the design of a simple ladder filter and the change of the filter performance was investigated in relation to the weighting of the series and parallel resonators, respectively. The results shows that the withdrawal weighted resonator ladder filters provide better performance in their bandwidth and transition characteristics than normal ones. This new equivalent circuit analysis method can also serve as a better tool to design and analyze general SAW resonator filters.

  • We proposed SAW (Self-Algined Selectively Grown W-Gate) MOSFET structure, and strudied electrical characteristics of the fabricated SAW MOSFETs. The threshold volgate of 0.21${\mu}$m SAW NMOSFET was 0.18 V and that of 0.24 ${\mu}$m SAW PMOSFET was -0.16 V. The subthreshold slope was 74 mV/decade for NMOSFET and 82 mV/decade for PMOSFET. The maximum transconductance of NMOSFET and PMOSFET, at V$_{GS}$=2.5 V and V$_{DS}$=1.5 V, were260 mS/mm and 122 mS/mm. The measured saturation drain current at V$_{GS}$=V$_{DS}$ =2.5 V was 0.574 mA/${\mu}$m for NMOSFET and -0.228 mA/${\mu}$m for PMOSFET. The gate resistance of SAW MOSFET was about m$\Omega$cm and the n+-p junction capacitance of SAW MOSFET was about 10% lowas than that of the conventional MOSFET's.

  • This paper is for the a study on home healthcare system for a patient using SAW Tag. This system is useful when there's a patient in home. Many patients are wounded in restroom. But restroom is very private place and nobody want to be disturbed here. The place where the patient is most injured in the house is the toilet, and it is the point where the privacy of the individual should be kept and the patient's condition should be checked and cope with in case of emergency. And using saw tag, we can calculate position and ID through reflected rf signal. Therefore we propose a general home healthcare system. The management system utilized a seat bed system to monitor at-home patients. The system mounts a bio-signal measuring unit on a toilet seat, measures a bio-signal from the bio-signal measuring unit, and the measured bio-signal is transmitted to the main server through the user's smart phone. With proposed system, we can expand operation area to silver town where many patients are cared. In this paper we developed sensor system and saw tag positioning system and showed the result.

  • We have developed SH (shear horizontal) surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors for detection of the immobilization and hybridization of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) on the gold coated delay line of transverse SAW devices. The experiments of DNA immobilization and hybridization were performed with 15-mer oligonucleotides (probe and complementary target DNA). The sensor consists of twin SAW delay line oscillators operating at 100 MHz fabricated on $36^{\circ}$ rotated Y-cut $LiTaO_3$ piezoelectric single crystals. The relative change in the frequency of the two oscillators was monitored to detect the hybridization between target DNA and immobilized probe DNA in pH 7.4 PBS (phosphate buffered saline) solution. The measurement results showed a good response of the sensor to the mass loading effects of the DNA immobilization and hybridization with the sensitivity up to $1.55{\cal}ng/{\cal}ml/Hz$.

The Effects of $SiN_x$ Dielectric Thin Films on SAW Properties of the High Frequency SAW Filter for Cellular Communication System ($SiN_x$유전 보호막이 이동통신용 고주파 SAW필터의 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • High frequency SAW filters for cellular communications were fabricated by metallizing 36$^{\circ}$Y-X LiTaO$_3$piezoelectric substrate with IIDT type electrodes. It was found that the center frequency of the filter was lowered than as designed. In order to overcome such a drawback and enable a fine tuning of its center frequency, dielectric SiN$_{x}$ thin films were deposited on LiTaO$_3$substrate by PECVD as passivation layer and then frequency responses were also characterized. As a result, the center frequency of the filter could be shifted to a higher frequency with increasing the thickness of SiN$_{x}$ film, because SAW velocity increased with increasing the ratio of the thickness of dielectric thin film to wavelength. The insertion loss of the filter, however, became larger with increasing the thickness of SiN$_{x}$ film.

  • We developed SAW gas sensor for monitoring SOx gas with high sensitivity. It was fabricated as a microsensor for detecting SOx gas by depositing sensing material on SAW device. As a detecting layer material, CdS was selected. Deposition of CdS in the form of thin films was carried out by the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis method using ultrasonic spray nozzle. Thin films with the uniform and large surface area for sensors were deposited. The stable pyrolysis environment provided by uniform and fine droplets formed by spray nozzle made it possible to obtain thin films with excellent quality. The minimum grain size of the CdS thin films was about 50 nm when deposited at $300^{\circ}C$. SAW gas sensors showed reasonable sensitivity and reproducibility. Further studies are required to investigate the interference of other gases to SOx gas detection.

  • High precision sensing is very important in various technologies. Especially, it is more important when it were applied to nano/micro meter level's sensing like AFM, storage, etc. And capacitive sensing is widely used method. To improve the measurement efficiency, many signal conditioners were studied and one of them was surface acoustic wave (SAW) device. SAW device is very widely used as a high frequency bandwidth filter. Due to the reflective characteristic of high frequency, the response of SAW device contains both propagative and reflective signal at the external impedance. In this paper, we used SAW device as signal conditioner of capacitive sensor. And high precision gap measurement was executed using capacitive load. Reference signal was reflective SAW response and the magnitude at the center frequency of SAW device by the change of impedance was checked. Finally, the attainable gap resolution was determined.

Development of an SH-SAW Sensor for Protein Measurement (단백질 측정용 SH-SAW 센서 개발)

  • We developed SH-SAW sensors to detect protein molecules in liquid solutions applying a particular antibody thin film on the delay line of transverse SAW devices. The antibody investigated was human-immune-globulin G (HigG) to hold the antigens (anti-HigG) in the protein solution. We fabricated the sensor generating 100 MHz with the piezoelectric single crystal LiTaO₃. We measured the frequency change of the sensor by adding the anti-body concentration on SAM (self assembled monolayer) deposited on the Au layer. The sensor showed stable response to the mass loading effects of the anti-HigG molecules with the sensitivity up to 10.8 ng/ml/Hz at noise level 400 Hz below.

A Study on Sealant Evaluation and Effectiveness of Saw and Seal Method for Reducing Reflection Cracking (반사균열 저감을 위한 Saw and Seal 공법의 줄눈재 평가 및 효과에 관한 연구)

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to select the proper sealing method and to see the performance of the saw and seal method for concrete rehabilitation based on accelerated pavement testings and lab tests. METHODS : Two accelerated pavement testings were conducted. One is to select proper sealing method of the asphalt joints and the other is to see the performance of the saw and seal method. Lab tests were conducted to select proper sealing method and a test section was constructed to see the field performance. RESULTS : The result of the first accelerated pavement testing indicated that the adhesive preformed sealants showed good performance when asphalt layer was rutted and in terms preventing from water infiltration. The second acceleration test indicated that the saw and seal method using the adhesive preformed sealant showed much better performance than the control. In the lab test bitumen, rubber and epoxy showed good performance as the adhesive. CONCLUSIONS : Saw and Seal method using the adhesive preformed sealant would markedly reduce the joint damage on the asphalt overlay.

  • Volatile components were detected from domestic and imported Angelica gigas Nakai without any pretreatment using GC based on Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) sensor. This system produced a frequency proportional to the amount of column effluent deposited on the SAW sensor. Discrimination between domestic and imported Angelica gigas Nakai was achieved through recognition of visual pattern using $VaporPrint^{TM}$ derived from frequency and chromatogram of GC-SAW sensor.
