  • "Saving lives by curing the world is the way of sages" is one of the key concepts from Daesoon Jinrihoe's The Canonical Scripture. In the Daoist scripture, The Most Excellent and Marvelous Lingbao Scripture of Limitless Salvation (The Salvation Scripture for short), a similar idea of 'saving the world and liberating lives' can be found, and it parallels the idea of religious healing in Daesoon Jinrihoe. Both systems of thought are internally consistent and focus on the individual living being as well as society by taking aim at curing human diseases while solving societal problems. Both sources also took influence from earlier Daoist Thought that responded to The Book of Changes, extended their innovations to traditional medicine, and realized the usefulness of religious healing. Although the two developed in different countries and time periods, their ideological similarities can still be appreciated. This paper delves into the above topic via three aspects: first, analyzing the historical background that produced Daesoon Jinrhoe's concept of "Saving Lives and Curing the World" while covering both individual and societal applications, second, examining the methods of implementing "Saving Lives and Curing the World" as a form of religious healing, and third, comparing the philosophical similarities between Daesoon Jinrihoe's "Saving Lives and Curing the World" and Lingbao Daoism's The Salvation Scripture in terms of their religious thought.

  • In the context of Daesoon Jinrihoe's The Canonical Scripture, 'Saving Lives' consists of one 44 verse-long chapter. The content covers Kang Jeungsan's authority and foreknowledge, and most of the passages are about the treatment of diseases. Other passages are about relief from natural disasters, the resolution of conflicts in personnel affairs, and wisdom as applied to saving lives. The treatment of diseases focuses on solving the ailments faced by lower classes during that time period. Kang Jeungsan relieved the damage suffered by the people from natural phenomena as caused by the three disasters which resulted from water, fire, and wind. He also worked to solve other difficulties experienced in human society. In addition, the definition of 'wisdom' here is one of being high-seeing and far-thinking in Saving Lives. That is the foundation upon which wisdom can save oneself and others. After comparing each chapter of The Canonical Scripture with the parallel verses from the 6th edition of Daesoon Jeongyeong, the results of this study can be summarized as follows: first, saving lives as performed by Kang Jeungsan became an unprecedented and absolute act of relieving the common people during a time when they were suffering from great harms, hardships, and difficulties in their daily lives during the late Joseon Dynasty. Second, the verses were distributed into seven parts to achieve the purpose indicated by the titles of each section which related to specific powers exhibited by Kang Jeungsan in his interactions with Heaven, Earth and Humanity. Third, the second chapter of 'Saving Lives' includes not only treatment of disease, natural disasters, and hardships, but also relief meant to lessen the burdens people experienced in their daily lives while living within the boundaries of society. This is different from the respective section from the 6th edition of Daesoon Jeongyeong which, by way of contrast, only contained verses concerning the treatment of disease. The contents of 'Saving Lives' in The Canonical Scripture deals with the relief in a wide range of applications and is thereby different from the chapter on healing from the Daesoon Jeongyeong, which merely dealt with the healing of diseases. Therefore, this broader range of meanings can be taken to be a unique feature of The Canonical Scripture.

  • This study examined apartment residents' energy-lifestyle, and their energy consumption patterns by energy-lifestyle. The major findings are as follow: 1)In order to identify energy lifestyle, three dimensions - value of life, energy consuming behavior and energy awareness - were defined by literature reviews, and each dimension was tested to define components. 2)The scores of the 14 factors that were defined by factor analysis on the three dimensions of the energy lifestyle were subject to cluster analysis, and then lifestyle was categorized into five groups. G1 is very negative, and indifferent to energy waste or saving at home. G2 is passively carrying out energy saving activities at home, only within their comfort. G3 is aware of energy saving, and more actively keeping energy saving behavior in their everyday lives, while they also show energy waste behavior at the same time. G4 is particularly indifferent to energy costs, and presenting energy squandering behaviors. G5 is better aware of energy saving than other groups, and carrying out energy saving behaviors in their everyday lives. This study would be of help to establish energy saving management and education plans in apartments.

  • The Office for Saving Lives (活人署) (OSL) was the office in charge of the treatment and relief of the poor in the Joseon Dynasty. This study disputes prior scholarship on the OSL by analyzing the use of a ready-made prescription and by focusing on the personality of the OSL's medical institutions. The work of the three government offices, the Office of Great Mercy (大悲院) (OGM), which was the formal office of OSL, the Office of Benefiting People (惠民署) and the Office of Aiding Life (濟生院), overlapped in the area of relief of the common people. But OGM was different from the other two in that it was not a purely medical office, had no educational function, and did not manage medicine. By analyzing a standing prescription, this article argues: 1) Heojun's influence on the composition of a standing prescription is absolute. 2) Epidemic warm disease (溫疫) was a major social problem in terms of emergency medical care at the time. 3) In the late Joseon Dynasty, the treatment of epidemic warm diseases became more sophisticated than the previous era.

  • With the architectural energy saving technique such as building insulation, airtightness etc., changing the indoor temperature and shortening the air conditioning time etc. are the good methods to practice energy saving in our lives. This study aims to seek a way to realize energy saving under investigation through a questionnaire survey about energy consumption condition and energy saving perception. 93% of the respondents recognized the need for energy saving, and 67% said more energy saving would possible in homes. Viable energy saving way was questioned by five steps method. More than 50% responded 'possible' or 'seems possible' at most of the items. Whereas less than 50% responded 'possible' or 'seems possible' at the items of 'lessening the cooling time' and 'lessening the shower time'. Ages of 50s who responded 'possible' or 'seems possible' was relatively less compared to 30s and 40s.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the level of conspicuous consumption and resource-saving behavior in primary school students, and to discover the factors that influence these behaviors most strongly. The research was conducted in 2011 using a written questionnaires that were completed by 500 primary school students residing in Seoul, South Korea. The data was analyzed using statistical methods, including frequency, percentiles, means, standard deviation, Cronbach's coefficient, ANOVA, and hierarchical multiple linear regression analysis, using SPSS 18.0. As a result of these analyses, the average level of conspicuous consumption was found to be 2.65 relatively rational score. Next, it was shown that the conspicuous consumption of respondents differed significantly based on variables, such as allowances, family income, socialization process in childhood, family cohesion, and parental child rearing method. Finally, the greatest influences on respondent's resource-saving behavior was seen to be the child's socialization process in childhood, family cohesion, parental child rearing method, and conspicuous consumption. These variables must therefore all be considered when teaching primary school students and encouraging them to assume rational resource-saving habits in their daily lives.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of lives and problems of 'Kirogi'(or Wild Goose) fathers, who were called fathers in the 'Kirogi' families, South Korean families separated by an ocean. They almost sent too much money that were $50-100\%$ of their family income to the families abroad, and got economic pressures so severely. More or less, they sold their own real estates, moved to much smaller sized house. and often expended the saving money. Also, they had difficulties of taking care of their children and felt lonely very much. By the hand, they might experience the adaptation process through 3 stages-troubles, acception(or wandering or enjoy), adjust (or violation). They had three types of problems, that is, family relationship problem(the isolation), psychological problem(loneliness and self-control), economic problem (financial pressure and drop of economic status). They found the strategies to overcome these problems for themselves. Firstly, they took lots of methods like email, internet chatting, phone, etc. to communicate with their family everyday and made many events to strengthen the ties among families. Secondly, they got rid of stresses mainly by joining with their colleagues at work. Finally, they decided to lower the standard of living of their family in foreign country or tried to find their wives' jobs to prevent the financial hardship.
