  • In satellite communication, transmission performance is degraded due to long propagation delay and relatively high data loss compared to terrestrial network. In this paper, We propose Hybrid TCP PEP scheme with XOR coding and Hybla TCP, which reduces the transmission performance degradation due to the transmission delay time. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the file transfer rate by more than 10% in the environment with high channel error rate. Therefore, Hybrid TCP, which is a mixture of XOR coding method and TCP Hybla, is considered to contribute to the improvement of transmission speed in satellite communication when applied to connection split PEP.

  • This paper proposes a transmission algorithm that optimizes transmission power and sub-channel allocation to maximize energy efficiency considering characteristics of the channel impedance of power lines in power line communication systems. Since the received power at the receiver is influenced by the characteristics of the power line channel, it is necessary to consider channel characteristics when developing a transmission strategy in a power line communication systems. In addition, the energy efficiency should be optimized while meeting the practical constraints, such as the maximum transmission power limit of the transmitter and minimum quality of service for each user. In the computer simulation, we confirm that the energy efficiency of the proposed algorithm is improved compared to baseline schemes.

  • This paper analyzed the JPEG compression performance of MTSAT-1R(Multi-functional Transport Satellite - 1 Replacement), which is offering the LRIT/HRIT(Low Rate Information Transmissio / High Rate Information Transmission) service now, in order to design the system regarding LRIT/HRIT of COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite). To do so, we analysed Lossy and Lossless JPEG compression performance regarding the MTSAT-1R LRIT/HRIT data for 10 days, and made comparison to the image characteristics, and understood the JPEG compression characteristics regarding JPEG compression of geostationary meteorological satellite. This result of compression performance analysis is expected to be a reference not only to the system design and realization of COMS LRIT/HRIT but also to those who develop other meteorological satellite receiving systems.

  • The Satellite Technology Research Centre (SaTReC), Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has developed and is to launch STSAT-1 (Science and Technology Satellite - 1) on 27$^{th}$ September 2003. The data collection system (DCS) is the one of its payloads. The DCS is a data relay system used for transmission from ground-based sensors through satellite to receiving station. This is one of the important methods collecting global data from the remote locations. In this paper, the DCS on the STSAT-1 will be introduced and the development of the mobile terminal (MT) will be reported.

  • The phase error in the digital transmission system are generated by random phase noise and tracking phase error due to doppler phenomenon. In the mobile satellite communication system that generates the doppler frequency, which is a system with a movement, the proper system phase noise spectrum should be designed based on analyses for phase noise and static phase error effects. Based on the analyses of the doppler frequency and the phase error for bilateral satellite communication system providing an asynchronous service, the phase noise spectrums for the mobile satellite communication are designed in this paper. Also, the available transmission services under the less doppler effect are proposed and the proper signal source units for a required transmission system can be designed under the proposed system phase noise spectrum.

  • Current studies based on the DVB-S2x standard for the next-generation multi-beam HTS/BH satellite have been investigated. To enhance the efficiency of the transmission throughput and maximize the utilization of the satellite payload resources and bandwidth, the concepts of two advanced techniques, namely, precoding and BH, are described. Furthermore, state-of-the-art aspects currently under discussion, and future study items in the DVB TM-S standardization group, are summarized in this article.

  • The SRI (Super Resolution Imager) uses the CCD (Charge coupled device) detector that is used to convert the light into electronic data. The purpose of the SRI is to obtain data for high resolution images by converting incoming light into digital stream of pixel data. The SRI has a high resolution, so this electronic system needs more fast imaging data processing, detector control and data transmission systems. This report describes the required system specification and manufactured electronic system for satellite.

  • A combined random/reservation multiple access protocol is proposed which can provide services for packet transmission in mobile satellite systems between mobile statons, or between mobile stations and fixed stations. Random multiple access protocol and reservation multiple access protocol which are currently employed in most satellite communication systems have some strengthes and some weeknesses in according to the kind of user and traffic. In this paper, a combined random/reservation multiple access protocol with better characteristics is proposed. The models of the modified random access protocol and the proposed access protocol is setted and analyzed. The performance of the PDAMA protocol, the random access protocol and the proposed access protocol is compared using simulation. For small packet arrival rate, the performance of the proposed access protocol is close at that of the modified random access protocol, and better than that of the PDAMA protocol. As the packet arrival rate is increased, the modified random access protocol is saturated and unstable at 0.23, and the performance of the proposed access protocol is better than that of the PDAMA protocol.

  • Satellite Image archiving system requires large storage and long transmission time. A simple and cheap way of overcoming these limitations is to increase the compression ratio. However this requires a feasibility study for accurate applications. Here, a new still image compression standard is being developed, the JPEG2000. It provides lossless and lossy compression, progressive transmission by pixel accuracy and by resolution, region-of-interest coding, user-defined tiling size, random codestream access and processing etc. In this study, we will briefly introduce the JPEG2000 compression standard which provides a new compression technique based on the wavelet technology and offers better compression ratios, and evaluate the compression ratios of JPEG2000 for satellite image by performing various image quality tests. Also, we will compare brief test result using the commercial remote sensing software.
