  • The study discussed the link analysis for the Ka band satellite broadcasting service in Korea with respect to the transmission schemes based on the DVB-S2 standard. To analyze the effect of the rain fading to the link budget, we estimated the rain attenuation from the measured rainfall intensity in Korea. We analyzed the link budget for the Ka band transponders of Koreasat-3, and DirecTV BSS-99W, and showed the possible link availability with the DVB-S2 transmission schemes for each transponder. Based on the link analysis of the available satellites with the Ka band transponders, we suggested the required EIRP for the satellite which will be employed for the Ka band satellite broadcasting service in Korea.

  • The power losses due to modulation index for multi-modulation scheme were analyzed under various transmission mode of satellite control and the necessary satellite link margin for transmission mode were proposed in this paper On the basis of the analyses for interference between the transmission signals and threshold of satellite control signal receiver, the optimal subcarrier signals were proposed for satellite range measurement methods, respectively. The subcarrier signal of 12 kHz or 14 kHz is proper for telecommand using the ESA method, and 16 kHz for telecommand signal using the GSTDN method. On the other hand, the telemetry subcarrier of 65.536 kHz is a proper in the viewpoint of receiver threshold value.

  • This study is a Ku-band array antenna for the manufacture of low-orbit satellite communication terminals, designed to have miniaturization, high gain, and wide beam width. The transmission of low-orbit satellite communication has a right-rotating circularly polarized wave, and the reception has a left-rotating circularly polarized wave. The 4×8 array antenna was separated for transmission and reception, and it was combined with the RF circuit part of the transmitter and receiver, and was terminated in the form of a waveguide for RF signal impedance matching in the form of a transition from the microstrip line to the waveguide. The 30° beam width of the receiver maximum gain of 19 dBi and the 29° beam width of the transmitter maximum gain of 18 dBi are shown. Through this antenna configuration, the system was configured to suit the low-orbit satellite transmission/reception characteristics.

  • In the operation of a low earth orbit satellite, a series of antenna commands are transmitted from a ground station to the satellite within a visibility window (i.e., the time period for which an antenna of the satellite is visible from the station) and executed to control the antenna. The window is a limited resource where all data transmission is carried out. Therefore, minimizing the transmission time for the antenna commands by reducing the data size is necessary in order to provide more time for the transmission of other data. In this paper, we propose a geometric compression method based on B-spline curve fitting using dominant points in order to compactly represent the antenna commands. We transform the problem of command size reduction into a geometric problem that is relatively easier to deal with. The command data are interpreted as points in a 2D space. The geometric properties of the data distribution are considered to determine the optimal parameters for a curve approximating the data with sufficient accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to conventional methods currently used in practice.

  • In this paper file transfer efficiencies of satellite and terrestrial links are analyzed, and a simulator that satellite links are supplementarily expanded to SARA(System ARchitect’ Apprentice) model, a terrestrial model of CSDN interface, is constructed. And in satellite transmission an interpretative method and a simulator of file transfer are proposed to evaluate the efficiency of file transfer. The parameters used are the message length and transmission time, and the optimum message length by transmission speed of satellite links. From the results of evaluation, in satellite transfer, it is found that when the length of message is shorter than 512 byte, the file transfer time becomes extremely long and when the length of message is set at 1,024 byte the file transfer time becomes minimum, and if the length of message is set more longer, the file transfer time abruptly increases from 2,048 byte. Therefore, from the results of file transfer simulation in the case of utilizing satellite transmission, it is found that the optimum massage length in the minimum transfer time is present closely at 1,024 byte.

  • In this paper, we introduce an adaptive radio resource allocation for IP-based mobile satellite services. We also present a synchronous multibeam CDMA satellite system using an orthogonal resource sharing mechanism among downlink beams for the adaptive packet transmission. The simulation results, using a Ka-band mobile satellite channel and various packet scheduling schemes, show that the proposed system and resource allocation scheme improves the beam throughput by more than two times over conventional systems. The simulation results also show that, in multibeam satellite systems, a system-level adaptation to a user's channel and interference conditions according to user locations and current packet traffic is more efficient in terms of throughput improvement than a user-level adaptation.

  • Free-space optical communication technology enables the high-speed data transmission and excellent anti-jamming security. We conduct research on satellite-to-ground free-space optical communication links for high-speed transmission of large-capacity surveillance and reconnaissance data. Since the satellite continues to move along its orbit while the optical signal is transmitted between the satellite and the ground, the pointing angle of the beam from the ground terminal needs to be corrected by Point Ahead Angle(PAA) so that the transmitted light reaches the expected location of the satellite. In this paper, we present the algorithm for PAA estimation and control.

  • Korea augmentation satellite system (KASS), which is a satellite-based augmentation system tailored for Korea, was launched for development in 2014. SBAS is a standard for aviation but it can also be utilized in non-aviation applications. The type and content of transmitted in SBAS data format are restricted. In order to utilize SBAS in fields that require the precision within centimeters, additional information has to be transmitted. It is important that data transmitted in nonstandard SBAS data not affect any operation of SBAS equipment. In this paper, we propose a non-standard SBAS data transmission method applicable to non-aviation applications that does not affect aviation SBAS receivers.

  • As the global demand for satellite IoT services using small satellites increases, interest in their frequency requirements has also increased. Consequently, International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R) preparatory studies for WRC-23 include AI 1.18, which considers new frequency allocations for narrowband mobile satellites. This agenda item was issued in accordance with Resolution 284 (WRC-19), and contributions and reviews by government and satellite operators are underway at ITU-R SG4 WP4C with the aim of completing the study in 2023. Resolution 248 (WRC-19) considers the conditions for transmission of candidate bands and satellites and terminals for narrowband mobile satellite, and all contributions should satisfy narrowband mobile satellite system characteristics parameters within these conditions. However, among the current transmission specifications, there are several views on the exact definition of satellite e.i.r.p., and the derivation schedule of characteristic system parameters for the study is slower than that of the original work schedule. The goal of this paper is to examine the outline of WRC-23 AI 1.18 and the main content of Resolution 284 (WRC-19) and to determine the status of studies related to WRC-23 AI 1.18. The ITU-R's study on this agenda includes updating work schedules, developing the draft required spectrum and system characteristics parameter reports/recommendations, developing draft CPM reports, and examining the various views of transmission specifications in Resolution 284 (WRC-19). Focusing on candidate bands in Region 1 (Europe and Africa) and Region 2 (America), the current status of use in Korea is investigated and future countermeasures in Korea are investigated. In addition, we would like to examine the trend of narrowband mobile satellite through satellite frequency and service status and planning of satellite IoT operators, such as EchoStar, Omnispace, and Sateliot that are participating in the ITU-R study.
