  • This paper presents the applications of spatial interpolation and assimilation methods for satellite and ground meteorological data, including temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation in regions of Vietnam. In this work, Universal Kriging is used for spatially interpolating ground data and its interpolated results are assimilated with corresponding satellite data to anticipate better gridded data. The input meteorological data was collected from 98 ground weather stations located all over Vietnam; whereas, the satellite data consists of the MODIS Atmospheric Profiles product (MOD07), the ASTER Global Digital Elevation Map (ASTER DEM), and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) in six years. The outputs are gridded fields of temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation. The empirical results were evaluated by using the Root mean square error (RMSE) and the mean percent error (MPE), which illustrate that Universal Kriging interpolation obtains higher accuracy than other forms of Kriging; whereas, the assimilation for precipitation gradually reduces RMSE and significantly MPE. It also reveals that the accuracy of temperature and humidity when employing assimilation that is not significantly improved because of low MODIS retrieval due to cloud contamination.

  • This study investigated the amino acid and nucleotide-related compound composition and taste characteristics of cultured muscle tissue (CMT) obtained by culturing satellite cells isolated from chicken and cattle and compared them to those of traditional meat (TM). The content of all amino acids except valine and tyrosine was significantly different between CMT and TM (p<0.05). The amount of glutamic acid was not significantly different between CMT and TM in cattle, but the glutamic acid in chicken CMT was lower than that of TM (p<0.05). Among the nucleotide-related compounds, only the content of inosine-5'-monophosphate (IMP) was significant, and the amount of IMP in CMT derived from chicken and cattle was significantly lower than that of TM (p<0.05). There were significant differences in the taste characteristics assessed by an electronic tongue system, and the umami, bitterness, and sourness values of CMT were significantly lower than those of TM from both chicken and cattle (p<0.05). The results of the present study suggest that it is necessary to develop a satellite cell culture method that could increase the umami and bitterness intensity of CMT and adjust the composition of the growth medium to produce cultured meat with a taste similar to that of TM.

  • This paper give further assessment on the original DoP-CPD classification scheme. This paper provides some additional comparative study on the DoP-CPD with H/A/alpha classifier in terms of multi look effects and classification performances. The statistics and multi looking effects of the DoP and CPD were analyzed with measured polarimetric SAR data. DoP-CPD is less sensitive to the number of averaging pixels than the entropy-alpha technique. A DoP-CPD diagram with appropriate boundaries between six different classes was then developed based on the data analysis. A polarimetric SAR image DoP-CPD classification technique is verified with C-band polarimetric RADARSAT-2 images.

  • Real-time rainfall monitoring is of great practical importance over the highly populated Indochina area, which is prone to natural disasters, in particular in association with rainfall. With the goal of d etermining near real-time half-hourlyrain estimates from satellite, the three-layer, artificial neural networks (ANN) approach was used to train the brightness temperatures at 6.7, 11, and $12-{\mu}m$ channels of the Japanese geostationary satellite MTSAT against passive microwavebased rain rates from Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Microwave Imager (TMI) and TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) data for the June-September 2005 period. The developed model was applied to the MTSAT data for the June-September 2006 period. The results demonstrate that the developed algorithm is comparable to the PERSIANN (Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks) results and can be used for flood monitoring across the Indochina area on a half-hourly time scale.

  • CO2 transfer velocity is one of the key parameters for CO2 flux estimation at air - sea interface. However, current studies show that significant inconsistency still exists in its estimation when using different models and remotely sensed data sets, which acts as one of the main uncertainties involved in the computation of CO2 exchange coefficient between air - sea interface. In this study, wind data collected from SSM/I and scatterometer onboard ERS-1, in conjunction with operational NOAA/AVHRR, are applied to different models for calculating CO2 exchange coefficient in the world ocean. Their interrelationship and discrepancies inherent with different models and satellite data are analyzed. Finally, the seasonal and inter-annual variation of CO2 exchanges coefficient for different ocean basins are presented and discussed.

  • For the last 14 years, space-borne satellite SAR system such as RADARSAT-1, ERS-2, and ENVISAT ASAR have provided a continuous observation over the ocean. However, the data acquired from those systems were limited to C-band frequency until the advent of the first spacebome German X-band SAR system TerraSAR-X in 2007. Korea is also planning to launch the nation's first X-band SAR satellite (KOMPSAT-5) in 2010. It is timely and necessary to develop X-band models for estimating geophysical parameters from these X-band SAR systems. In this study, X-band wind retrieval model was investigated and developed based on numerical ocean scattering model (radar backscattering model and hydrodynamic interaction model). Although these models have not yet been tested and validated for broad ranges of wind conditions, the estimated wind speeds from TerraSAR-X data show generally good agreement with in-situ measurements.

  • Clustering is the process of partitioning a data set into meaningful clusters. As the data to process increase, a laster algorithm is required than ever. In this paper, we propose a clustering algorithm to partition a multispectral remotely sensed image data set into several clusters using a hash search algorithm. The processing time of our algorithm is compared with that of clusters algorithm using other speed-up concepts. The experiment results are compared with respect to the number of bands, the number of clusters and the size of data. It is also showed that the processing time of our algorithm is shorter than that of cluster algorithms using other speed-up concepts when the size of data is relatively large.
