Seagrass bed is an important component in coastal and estuarine ecosystems, providing food and shelter to a wide variety of fauna. Recently, seagrass coverage has declined significantly due to anthropogenic influences such as reclamation, dredging, and eutrophication and consequently, necessity of seagrass habitat restoration is rising. Transplantation experiments with Zostera marina using TERFS, staple method, and shell method have been conducted at Dadae Bay, Kosung Bay and Jindong Bay on the south coast of Korea to select an optimal transplanting method for restoration of Z. marina habitat. Three experimental sites located at the vicinity of natural Z. marina beds with an average water depth of about 4m. Z. marina plants, which were collected from donor bed in Koje Bay were also transplanted at 7 different time from October 2003 to July 2004 to find appropriate transplanting time. Density of Z. marina was monitored monthly at both transplanted areas and natural beds. Transplantation using the staple method showed the highest survival rate of transplant. Shell method was also an effective transplanting method at muddy areas in Kosung Bay and Jindong Bay, but not suitable at sandy areas in Dadae Bay. These results suggest that sediment composition of transplanting areas should be considered for the selection of the optimal transplanting method. Z. marina transplanted during fall usually showed the highest survival rate, while most Z. marina plants transplanted in summer died due to high lethal temperature during this period.

The study area is a pocket beach which consisted of sandy beach, dune, agricultural land and residential area etc. The coastal dune area is classified to foredune, dune plain, secondary (or back) dune. The foredune area is covered by herbaceous dune plants(ex. Carex kobomugi, Wedelia prostrata, etc.), whereas the dune plain area is covered by herbs and shrubs(Vitex rotundifolia). The most inner area, secondary dune, is planted by pine forest(Pinus thunbergii). The mean size of the beach and dune sediments ranges from 1.1 to $1.8{\Phi}$, which mean these values are higher than normal sediments. Sorting and Skewness is $0.6{\sim}-1.2{\Phi}$ and $-2.7{\sim}1.6{\Phi}$ respectively. We found that the soil formation process in the secondary dune area has been progressed rapidly from the analysis of fine grain content, organic matter content, and CEC.
Vertical distribution of bacterial population and activities were compared between the muddy and sandy sediment of the tidal flat located in southern area of Ganghwa Island. The average of bacterial number and activities in mud flat was slightly higher than that in sand flat. Bacterial number was markedly increased at the sandflat during the investigation period, which seemed to be the result of increase of mud content. The number and activities of microorganisms in mudflat was comparable to that of the mangrove sediments. There was no differences in bacterial number with the depth, but the aminopeptidase activity and bacterial productivity were decreased markedly within 3~5cm depth of sediment due to the availability of carbon sources and molecular oxygen in pore water. The number and activities of microorganisms in mudflat did not correlated with the distribution of benthic microalgae; however, those in sand flat were closely correlated with the distribution of benthic microalgae. The distribution of marsh plant in the mudflat area might be the reason of the difference.

To investigate the characteristics of sand sediment topography in the Yeonggwang coastal area of Chonnam and to collect evidence of the past extreme events causing coastal flooding, three sites were surveyed among the sediments of Baeksoo-eup Hassari. In this study, the changes of particle characteristics, chemical composition, and the age of deposition of sediments were investigated. The sediments near Baeksoonam Elementary School at the elevation of 10m near the paleo-coastline are estimated to have been deposited at about 3,400 years ago and the grain size of the upper part of the sandy layer is in the range of $2.47-2.11{\varphi}$. The burial age of the sediment layer at Sadeung junction(BSN-B) was about 100 years. Considering the distance from the current coastline, the sands forming the dune are estimated to have been moved or deposited from the nearby area or the other dune on the front side. The mean grain size is observed to be fining upward. Especially, the mean of the upper part is about $2.3{\varphi}$, which is similar to other survey points. The averaged grain size of the lower part of the BSNC (Hasari-1 Gu) was $2.196{\varphi}$ and the upper part was $2.16{\varphi}$. The sorting showed that the upper part was slightly poorer than the lower, and it was difficult to specify the change of the environment. The burial age of the lower layer, which contains shells, was about 300 years. Considering previous studies, this shell layer is presumed to have formed by coastal flooding, such as a storm surge.

The growth and population dynamics of eelgrass (Zostera marina) due to changes in sediment composition were examined in the lower intertidal zone of the Seomjin Estuary, Korea. We surveyed environmental factors such as water temperature, underwater irradiance, main types and organic content of sediment, tidal exposure, and nutrient concentrations in the water column and sediment pore water, in relation to the shoot density, biomass, morphological characteristics, and growth of Z. marina inhabiting lower intertidal zones. The survey was conducted monthly from May to December of 2004 and 2009. The water temperature showed obvious seasonal trends in both study years. Underwater irradiance was significantly higher in 2009 than in 2004. Tidal exposure was not significantly different between 2004 and 2009. The sediment was muddy-sand in 2004 but became sandy and with a significantly lower organic content in 2009. Water column $NH_4{^+}$ concentrations were significantly higher in 2004 than in 2009. Sediment pore water $NO_3{^-}+NO_2{^-}$ concentrations were significantly higher in 2009 than in 2004. Other nutrient concentrations did not differ significantly between 2004 and 2009. Morphological characteristics, including eelgrass length and leaf width were significantly lower in 2009 than in 2004. Eelgrass shoot height, leaf length, and sheath length showed typical seasonal patterns, increasing in early summer and decreasing in autumn, in both years. Vegetative shoot density was not significantly different between 2004 and 2009, while the biomass of individual plant parts and the total biomass were significantly lower in 2009. Eelgrass leaf productivity did not differ between years, but leaf turnover time was significantly shorter in 2009 than in 2004. Eelgrass downsizing and decreased turnover time in 2009 compared to 2004 indicate more effective adaptations to the stress of long-term changes in sediment composition. Overall, results suggest that changes in sediment composition can be a limiting factor for seagrass growth in the intertidal zone.
This experiment was designed to find out the soil properties to control the soil erodibility. Two kinds of soil conditioners, hydrophilic Uresol and hydrophobic Bitumen were treated to sandy loam and silt loam. Soil erodibility was tested during a simulated rainfall in a soil pan which was covered with a 2cm layer of treated and untreated aggregates (< 5.36mm) on a soil layer. The runoff starting time was delayed 8-20 minutes by Uresol treatment and it was hasten 1-21 minutes by Bitumen treatment. Runoff rates were reduced by Uresol to 62.5% in sandy loam and 93.7% in silt loam, but it was increased by Bitumen treatment. Erosion from the Uresol treated soil was remarkably reduced to 1.7-23.6% of that in the untreated soil. In case of the Bitumen treatment, the soil loss from silt loam was reduced to 55.5% of the control, but it was increased in sandy loam soil by 52% over the control. The ratio of soil loss and runoff, sediment concentration in runoff, was noticeably increased when the soil structure was unstable. There was significant correlation between soil loss and logarithm of wetting angle-stability index. Soil loss was greatly increased when the index was less than 0.2.

In this study, the past erosion history and current status in the CHUNG-UI beach of Eulwang-dong, Jung-gu, Incheon-Si, South Korea were investigated and analyzed the wave with wave-induced current to investigate the causes of coastal erosion. As a result, the significant wave height ($H_{1/3}$) was in the range of 0.07~1.57 m and the mean value was 0.21 m. The maximum wave height ($H_{max}$) was in the range of 0.02-4.76m and the mean value was 0.27m. The vertical wave height and cycles were estimated through numerical model experiments of wave transformation. The 50-year frequency design wave height ranged from 0.82m to 3.75m. As a result of the experiment of wave-induced current, wave-induced current in the CHUNG-UI beach was decreased after the installation of the Detached breakwater and the Jetty. On the other hand, when the crest elevation was increased up to 5 m, there was no significant change, but when the crest elevation was increased to 8m, strong wave-induced current occurred around the submerged breakwaters due to lowered depth of water. In addition, the main erosion of the CHUNG-UI beach is due to the intensive invasion of the wave characteristics coming from the outer sea into the white sandy beach. The deformation of the wave centered on the front of the sandy beach caused additional longshore currents flowing parallel to the sandy beach and rip currents in the transverse direction, thus confirming that the longshore sediment was moved out of the front and out of the sea. The results of this study can be used as preliminary data for the recovery of the sand and the selection of efficient erosion prevention facilities.
East China Sea (ECS) is known to be supplied with large amounts of sediments form Huanghe, Changjiang and various rivers in Korea. Many studies have been conducted to identify the effects of rivers and deposition process of ECS, but no consensus has been reached. In this study, clay minerals, rare earth elements (REEs) and grain size were analyzed to study the provenance and sedimentation environment of core 99MAP-P63 in ECS. Clay mineral contents of 99MAP-P63 are abundant in order of illite, chlorite, kaolinite, and smectite. The provenance of 99MAP-P63 sediments using clay minerals is interpreted as the Changjiang regardless of depth. As a result of REEs analysis, 99MAP-P63 sediments are very similar to Chinese rivers sediments. Therefore, the provenance of 99MAP-P63 is Changjiang, and the influence of Korean river seems to be insignificant. 99MAP-P63 sediments are generally classified as sandy silt, but the top of the core is divided into sand with a sand contents of 85 %. Compared with surrounding cores, sandy silt sediments arecorresponded to the low stand stage when sea-level was low, and the sediments were thought to have been supplied directly through the paleo-Changjiang. Sandy sediments in uppermost of core are corresponded to transgressive stage. Although distance from estuary was increased due to sea-level rise, it was possible to supply coarse sediments due to high bottom stress, and the paleo-Changjiang sediments deposited in study area were re-deposited.
Ammonia oxidation activity of polluted water samples in Jinhae Bay and isolated strain from the seawater was investigated, and effects of environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, substrate concentration to the ammonia oxidation were also investigated. The ammonia oxidation activities of sediments, 0.01-0.04mg eq. $NO_2-N/l/h$, were exceptionally higher than that of sea water, $0.5{\sim}1{\mu}g$ eq. $NO_2-N/l/h$. the activities of muddy sediments at station 4 and 2 were 0.03~0.04mg eq. $NO_2-N/l/h$ and that of sandy sediment at station 3 was 0.002mg eq. $NO_2-N/l/h$. In the case of sea water, the activity of polluted area, station 1, was 2 times higher than that of offshore, station 4. The isolated strain reached log phase after 30days culturs and its oxidation activity was $2{\sim}3{\mu}g$ eq. $NO_2-N/day$. The maximum oxidation of ammonia by IA 13 strain occured at 30mg/l oxidation increased with the salinity rising up to 100% seawater concentraion. And temperature for maximum oxidation of ammonia was $35^{\circ}C$. the oxidation increased with the salinity rising up to 100% seawater concentration.
Eelgrass, Zostera marina L. widely spreads throughout all the coastal areas of the Korean Peninsula. However, some previously reported eelgrass populations disappeared. The disappearance was probably caused by anthropogenic disturbance such as reclamation and pollutant or exceeded nutrient release. Eelgrass beds occurred from the intertidal to the subtidal zone, mainly in lagoon, estuaries, ports, barrier reef and bays. Eelgrass beds were also found at the intertidal mud and sand flats, subtidal mud and sandbank in more exposed areas. Habitat characteristics of eelgrass beds distributed on the coasts of the Korean Peninsula varied among coast areas. Eelgrass distributed constantly throughout the southern coast of Korea, while the distribution was limited at lagoon, bay, port, or barrier reef on the eastern coast, because of steep water depth and high wave energy in that coast. On the western coast, eelgrass mainly appeared at the intertidal and subtidal zones in islands. Sediment characteristics of the Z. marina beds varied with locality, tidal current and water motion. Sediments of Z. marina beds were composed of sand, muddy sand, sandy mud and mud. Mean grain size ranged from 1.5 to 4.1 phi.
