Sand Compaction Piles (SCPs) are constructed by feeding and compacting sand into soft clay ground. Sand piles have been installed with irregular cross-sectional shapes, and mixtures of both sand and clay, which violate the design requirement of circular shape according to the replacement area ratio due to various factors, including side flow pressure. Therefore, design assumptions cannot be satisfied according to the conditions of the ground and construction and the replacement area ratio. Two case histories were collected, examined, and interpreted in order to study the effect of the shape of SCPs. The effects of the distortion of SCP shape and the mixture of sand and clay were studied with the results of large direct shear tests. The design internal friction angle was secured with the irregular cross-sectional sand piles regardless of the replacement area ratio. The design internal friction angle was secured regardless of mixed condition when the mixture of sand and clay was higher than the replacement area ratio of 65%. Therefore, systematic construction management is recommended with a replacement area ratio below 65%.
In order to design accurately sand compaction pile (SCP) method with low replacement area ratio, it is important to understand the mechanical interaction between sand piles and clays and its mechanism during consolidation process of the composition ground. In this paper, a series of numerical analyses on composition ground improved by SCP with low replacement area ratio were carried out, in order to investigate the mechanical interaction between sand piles and clays. The applicability of numerical analyses, in which an elasto-viscoplastic consolidation finite element method was applied, could be confirmed comparing with results of a series of model tests on consolidation behaviors of composition ground improved by SCP. And, through the results of the numerical analyses, each mechanical behavior of sand piles and clays in the composition ground during consolidation was elucidated, together with stress sharing mechanism between sand piles and clays.
In this paper, a series of model tests were performed in laboratory to evaluate promoting consolidation of compaction pile methods for soft ground improvement. For the model tests, composite soil samples that have 10% replacement area ratio were prepared by using sand, gravel, and sandy gravel for the materials of compaction piles. After loading to each composite soil sample, the excess pore pressure dissipation and settlement were investigated. In addition, the behavior of clay mixed with each compaction pile was also monitored at the end of consolidation to evaluate clogging phenomenon. As a test result, the effects for decreasing settlement and promoting consolidation by GCP were prominent, and the mixed clay was not monitored in all of the three compaction piles.
In this study, the infiltration quantity of fine-grained soil into coarse-grained soil or aggregate for methods to accelerate consolidation drainage is checked by laboratory tests under various conditions and those characteristics on infiltration are examined closely. Irrespectively of pressures to fine-grained soil corresponding to stresses in a soil mass or moisture contents of fine-grained soil, fine-grained soil does not infiltrate into standard sand and marine sand, so it is verified that drain-resistance into sand mass of drainage / pile does not occur entirely and its shear strength would increase highly by water compaction. It is known that the infiltration depth of fine-grained soil into aggregate increases according that those size is larger in case of aggregates and it increases according that the pressure or the moisture contents is higher in case of same size aggregate. It is thought that drain-resistance into aggregate mass of drainage / pile would occurs by infiltrated fine-grained soil in advance though the infiltration depth of fine-grained soi of lower moisture content than liquid limit into 13 mm aggregate is low quietly. So gravel drain method or gravel compaction pile method, etc. using aggregate of gravels or crushed stones, etc. larger than sand particle size should be not applied in very soft fine-grained soil mass of higher natural moisture contents than liquid limit, and it is thought that its applying is not nearly efficient also in soft fine-grained soil mass of lower natural moisture contents than liquid limit.

Sand compaction pile (SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which are being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model tests and 3-D finite element analyses were performed to investigate the interaction between sand compaction piles and surrounding soft soils. Based on the results obtained, as the area replacement ratio increases, the stress concentration ratio increases at the pile point, the settlement decreases, and the relative displacement between column and soil also decreases. It is also found that numerical study is illustrated by good comparison with model test results, and the numerical analysis revealed slip effects which could not be specifically identified in the model tests.
Sand compaction pile(SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which is being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model test and large-scale direct shear test were performed to investigate the effects of area replacement ratio of composite ground in order to find out the optimum value of area replacement ratio for the ground improvement purpose. Area replacement ratios of 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% were chosen respectively in the model tests to study the effects of area replacement ratio on variations of stress concentration ratio, settlement and shear strength characteristics of composite ground. In large-scale direct she4ar tests, area replacement ratios of 20%, 30%, 46% were applied to study their effects on shear strength characteristics of composite ground.

In this study, the effect of noise and vibration, and influence of ground improvement are evaluated and its application is analyzed through the example of SCP designed at ground improvement in Song-Do international city. consequently, it showes even comfortable result that it is about 5.0m of inner space, when the LVSCP method is applied, rather than that it is about 30m of inner space when the existing SCP is applied in vibration control standards 2.0mm/sec. In the noise, now that the many differences according to environmental factors like other equipment noise, limited space and so on at the time of the construction by LVSCP method are coming out, so we think that appro itate measures are needed according to surroundings. By the way, when it comes to the estimation of the ground improvement work before and after an improvement of LVSCP method, its result shows that it is satisfacttion to all the standards of compaction control in dregded and reclaimed ground and sedimentary clay layer.
Damages by vibration and noise due to the construction performance are increasing. The rise of construction demand and enlargement of equipments are major reasons of this damage. As a result, the enmity of the people is provoked and this appears to be an obstacle of construction work. Especially, in case of ground improvement construction. Casing pipe is inserted into the Sand Drain, Sand Compaction Pile and Vibrated Crushed-stone Pile by vibration power when carrying out. Hence, a pillar is formed and it creates vibration and noise. This causes a lot of restrictions to construction condition. The low Vibration and low noise construction equipments uses earth auger and hydrulic cylinder for insertion and chopping operation instead of vibro hammer, which is the source of vibration and noise. This minimize ground disturbanceand decrease vibration and noise successfully, but increase chopping effect greatly. Thus, this new equipment is not only suitable for environment but also excellent engineering method of construction.
