  • A study on the estimation of the stock density and biomass of Perinereis aibuhitensis in the tidal zone in Sosan, Chungchongnam-do, Korea was carried out from June to July 1988. A preliminary survey was conducted to determine the distribution pattern of the species and the optimum sample size for setting up the sampling design. The stock densities of the species by stratum and by subarea were estimated using the stratified random sampling method, based upon the results of preliminary survey. The differences in density between strata as well as among subareas were tested to decide whether they can be combined together for estimating the overall stock biomass or not. The results of the survey showed that p. aibuhitensis were randomly distributed(Poisson distribution) and the number of quadrats which satisfies a reasonable level of precision was determined to be five by stratum. The densities between strata were not significantly different, while densities among subareas were different. Subarea C showed the highest density with the mean of $53.9g/m^2$ and followed by subarea B. The density of subarea A was the lowest with the mean of $18.2g/m^2$. The overall mean density from the study area was $32.4g/m^2$ with the coefficient of variance(CV) of $6.8\%$ The overall stock biomass was estimated to be 147.5mt in this area.

  • In micro-scale electromechanical systems, the power to perform accurate position sensing often greatly exceeds the power needed to generate motion. This paper explores the implications of sampling rate and amplifier noise density selection on the performance of a system identification algorithm using a capacitive sensing circuit. Specific performance objectives are to minimize or limit convergence rate and power consumption to identify the dynamics of a rotary micro-stage. A rearrangement of the conventional recursive least-squares identification algorithm is performed to make operating cost an explicit function of sensor design parameters. It is observed that there is a strong dependence of convergence rate and error on the sampling rate, while energy dependence is driven by error that may be tolerated in the final identified parameters.

  • This paper develops maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) of unknown parameters in an exponentiated half-logistic distribution based on a progressively type-II censored sample. We obtain approximate confidence intervals for the MLEs by using asymptotic variance and covariance matrices. Using importance sampling, we obtain Bayes estimators and corresponding credible intervals with the highest posterior density and Bayes predictive intervals for unknown parameters based on progressively type-II censored data from an exponentiated half logistic distribution. For illustration purposes, we examine the validity of the proposed estimation method by using real and simulated data.

  • A new method for stabilizing the bias of an Electro-Optic mach-Zehnder modulator has been developed to maximize the switching extinction ratio in burst mode packet traffic. By sampling and minimizing the off-level output power of the modulator, a high extinction optical gate switch in obtain regardless of the variation of the packet traffic density.

  • Large eddy simulation is applied to the turbulent flow and heat transfer in straight cooling passages with varying aspect ratio. The turbulent statistics of the flow and thermal quantities are calculated and the characteristics of Nusselt number are investigated. To scrutinize near-wall streamwise vortices, a conditional sampling technique is adopted. Clockwise and counter-clockwise rotating streamwise vortices are sampled and the probability density function of the vortex circulation Reynolds number and wall Nusselt number are calculated.

  • We investigated the mesozooplankton community structure during autumn in the southern Yellow Sea. Mesozooplankton density generally ranged from 352 to 2,954 ind. m-3 and varied according to different sampling stations. The copepod Paracalanus parvus s.l. and its copepodites dominated in the communities, corresponding to 57.3% in density of the total. Surface and water-column averaged salinity were positively correlated with density of total mesozooplankton, copepods and a few dominant species, and the tunicate Thalia rhomboides was negatively related to chlorophyll-a concentration. The mesozooplankton community of the study area was divided into three groups according to the cluster analysis using species composition and density: one in the northern coastal region, another in the northern offshore region, and the other in the south. The most significant indicator species for each of the groups were Labidocera euchaeta in the northern coastal region, T. rhomboides in the northern offshore region, and Themisto sp. juveniles in the south. This study provides recent data on the characteristics of the mesozooplankton community in the southern Yellow Sea, which may be valuable for gaining a better understanding of changes in the pelagic ecosystem of the Yellow Sea.

  • In this paper, we describe a flow meter system for pulverized coal developed for the pulverizer-burner system of a boiler or blast furnace, which uses the density and the velocity of the granule flow. The granule flow density is measured by a sensor that detects the capacitance from the electrode on the surface of the piping system. The velocity of granule flow can be calculated using the distance between two pairs of built-in sensors in the flow direction, the time obtained from the sampling cycle using the correlation method between two waveforms of the sensors. The flow rate is calculated from the density and velocity of the granule flow. The reliability and accuracy of the flow meter system has been verified by comparing the data with the weight measured from a load-cell.

  • In this study, Echo-sounder($E_s$) monitoring methodology was applied to test environmental impacts of artificial weirs(SCW and JSW) in the Yeongsan River on fish community and habitat structures at first time, and was compared with conventional fish sampling methodologies($C_s$). For the Es monitoring in the fields, parallel transect methods was employed in determining the survey distance interval with every 125 m within the upper-lower 2 km of the weirs. Four different fish sampling gears such as casting nets, kick nets, fyke nets, and gill nets were used for applications of $C_s$ monitoring methodology. According to the Echo-sounder monitoring, fish density, expressed as a number of individuals per square meter, along the longitudinal axis of the weir was significantly greater(JSW, t = 3.506, n = 30, p < 0.001) in the down-river reach of the weir than in the up-river reach. Also, fish density along the vertical water column was highest at mid-depths of Seungchon weir, which has simple habitat substrates, while fish density was highest at hypolimnetic depth of Juksan weir. According to fish sampling by the $C_s$ methodology, the fish compositions decreased as the river goes upward, and significant differences(JSW, t = 0.248, n = 30, p < 0.05) in the compositions of fish species occurred between up-reach and down-reach of the weirs. The dominant species near the two weirs were Opsarichthys uncirostris amurensis, Hemiculter eigenmanni and Coilia nasus. Overall, our fish and habitat data, based on $E_s$ and $C_s$ monitoring methodologies, suggest that the weirs disturbed the rivers due to initial habitat disturbances by the weir constructions as well as the barrier roles of weirs on fish passage and migrations. More long-term scientific and systematic fish impact monitoring and assessments($E_s$ and $C_s$) are required in the future to predict changes of ecological structures and functions on the constructions of the weirs.

  • Typical of large, oligotrophic lakes, Lake H$\ddot{o}$vsg$\ddot{o}$l, Mongolia, exhibits complex morphometry which should support a spatially heterogeneous community of benthic macroinvertrates. The lake also exhibits a broad range of land uses. Based on the variation in land use and complex physical habitat of the lake (e.g. substrate variation and presence of affluent streams in bays), we asked two questions. First, does density of total benthic macroinvertebrates vary between different bays in Lake H$\ddot{o}$vsg$\ddot{o}$l? Second, does density of individual benthic taxa vary by bay? Samples collected in 1997, the last year for benthic sampling of the lake, were designed to test for variation in macroinvertebrate density between bays and can now be used to establish baseline variation in density for future studies. A total of 56 Ponar grab samples were analyzed from six bays in Lake H$\ddot{o}$vsg$\ddot{o}$l. Results of a general linear model analysis of variance showed that total density of macroinvertebrates varied only slightly between bays of the lake, but that most individual taxa showed significant variation between bays. Variation in density for most taxa was linked to substrate composition rather than other geographic or physical variables in the lake. Recent increases in grazing intensity and ecotourism along the shores should be managed to reduce the nutrient load into the lake to avoid impairment of the benthic biota of this unique, ancient ecosystem.

  • This study was conducted to provide basic information on the management of natural deciduous forests by presenting suitable stand density over time for natural deciduous forests in Pyungchang Area. The stand density index(SDI) for the sampling point was also computed. The cutting scenarios were adopted by considering the SDI estimated in the sampling point. And then, simulation cutting was enforced to the stand. Cutting scenarios consisted of three cutting levels, with the period of 5 years where each suitable cutting level of selection system will not have the SDI over the maximum SDI throughout 30 years and consider harvest after 30 years. As a result of the simulation cutting, it was found that removing 12% and 14% of basal area per each time kept proper stand density while removing 10% exceed to the adequate basis. From an economic point of view, it was concluded that removal 12% of basal area would be the most suit cutting level in selection system.
