Self-absorption is the most important factor affecting the accuracy of gamma spectroscopy measurements in environmental samples. In particular, it is affected by other factors such as the chemical composition of the sample, geometric shape, thickness, density, atomic number, distance between the sample and detector, energy of the emitted gamma photon, and humidity coefficient or percentage in the sample. To test the calibration method, a 450 ml CRM standard source (9 nuclide) Marinelli beaker was used. Five soil samples among environmental samples were measured by density by applying the corrected values. Therefore, it can be seen that the self-absorption value is more effective for somewhat large and low photon energy. In the case of environmental samples, it was confirmed that the overall energy peak efficiency through self-absorption of the source greatly depends on the density of the sample.

The precise determination of the activity for each radionuclide in environmental samples requires the self-absorption correction factor. In this research, we derived the self-absorption correction factor for three p-type high purity germanium detectors using the Monte Carlo code MCNPX. These detectors have different characteristics such as crystal diameter, height and size of the core. We compared the calculated full-energy peak efficiency with the experimental value using a standard sample with $1g/m^3$ density and verified the modeling. We simulated the dependency of the full-energy peak efficiency on the 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.0, 1.2 and $1.5g/m^3$ samples and obtained the corresponding self-absorption correction factor. The self-absorption correction factors calculated for the three detectors differ by less than 1% over most of the energy range and sample densities considered. This indicates that the self-absorption correction factors are independent of the crystal characteristics of HPGe detector.

In the low level radioactivity measurement, such as environmental radioactivity, there were used commonly cylindrical and Marinelli type beakers by means of measurement container. If there are differences in the matrix density or sample height between standard source and sample, it must be determined full energy peak efficiency considering self absorption effect. In this paper, we compared measured efficiency with calculated full energy peak efficiencies in the HPGe detector using the Monte Carlo method. For cylindrical container, we calculated the variation of the efficiency with sample height. Also, we calculated the variation of the detection efficiency with apparent density in the cylindrical and Marinelli container. It was seen that it need to be corrected for self absorption in the energy range of below 1000keV. Also, in order to verify the validity of calculation, we compared the calculated value with reference value using NIST SRM 4353 reference soil.

In order to decommission the shielding concrete of KRR(Korea Research Reactor) -1&2, it must be exactly determined activated level and range by neutron irradiation during operation. To determine the activated level and range, it must be sampled and analyzed the core sample. But, there are difficulties in sample preparation and determination of the measurement efficiency by self-absorption. In the study, the full energy efficiency of the HPGe detector was compared with the measured value using standard source and the calculated one using Monte Carlo simulation. Also. self-absorption effects due to the density and component change of the concrete were calculated using the Monte Carlo method. Its results will be used radioactivity analysis of the real concrete core sample in the future.

When the low level radioactivity sample is measured, it is required to have many samples. For increase of the sample volume, a scattering and absorbing probability of the emitted gamma-ray in the sample are to be increased. In order to correct the self-absorption effect, the counting efficiency must be calibrated according to a geometrical condition and sample density. But, it is impossible to determine efficiency for counting sample using standard source with the same geometrical condition and density. In this study, the measuring efficiencies were determined with various counting containers and densities. In order to compare the self-absorption effect with the sample density in the various sample container, the variation of the counting efficiency with the densities was investigated by adding NaI, which has high solubility and density. Also, they were compared with Monte Carlo simulation. The self-absorption effect was found to be significant in the low energy region below 0.5 MeV.
Gamma spectroscopy analysis is widely used for radioactivity analysis, and various factors are required for radioactivity calculations. Among the factors, K3 for each sample significantly influences the results. The previous methods of correcting the self-absorption effect include a computational simulation method and a method that requires making a CRM(certified reference material) identical to the sample medium. However, the above methods have limitations when used in small institutions because they require specialized program utilization skills or high manufacturing costs and large facilities. The aim of this study is to develop a method that can be easily and rapidly applied to radioactivity analysis. After filling the beaker with water, we placed the radiation source in a uniform position and used the measured value as the benchmark. Next, a correction factor was derived based on the difference in the radiation source count of the benchmark and the identically measured sample. For the radiation source, Eu-152, which emits a broad range of energy within the measurement range of gamma rays, and Cs-134 and Cs-137, which are indicator nuclides in environmental radiation analysis, were used. The sample was selected within the density range of 0.26-2.11 g/cm3, and the correction factor was derived by calculating the count difference of each sample compared to the reference value of water. This study presents a faster and more convenient method than the existing research methods for determining the self-absorption effect correction, which has become increasingly necessary.
The purpose of the present investigation was to improve several procedures being used in the adherence assay of Streptococcus sanguis cells to hydroxyapatite (HA) beads and to study the effect of the beads on the counting of radioactivity. The standard adhere assay involved the adherence of radiolabeled bacteria to 40mg of HA beads. The beads were mixed with ['H]thymidine-labeled bacterial cells and incubated for 60 minutes at room temperature. Unadsorbed cells were removed, the beads with adsorbed cells were dried, and the radioactivity was monitered in a scintillation spectrometer. The 30 seconds sonication of cells in a form of long chains appeared to be adequate for obtaining mostly singlet or doublet cells. Unlike the counting of S. sanguis cell suspension, bacterial cells adhered to HA or saliva-coated HA(SHA) required smaller volume (2.5ml) of scintillaton fluid for better counting. Eighteen percent quenching of counts could be attributed to the beads. Among 3 procedures commonly used to equilibrate the beads for adherence assay, no differences were found in their effectiveness. The HA beads on which the bacteria remained attached in scintillant during the counting were found to be the source of sample self-absorption representing 34.5% of the total radioactivity counts resulting from the beads dissolved in HCl solution.
Concrete is one of the most widely used materials as the shielding structures of a nuclear facilities. It is also the most generated radioactive waste in quantity while dismantling facilities. Since the concrete captures neutrons and generates various radionuclides, radiation measurement and analysis of the sample was fulfilled prior to dismantle facilities. An HPGe detector is used in general for the radiation measurement, and effective correction factors such as geometrical correction factor, self-absorption correction, and absolute detector efficiency have to be applied to the measured data to decide exact radioactivity of the sample. Correction factors are obtained by measuring data using a standard source with the same geometry and chemical states as the sample under the same measurement conditions. However, it is very difficult to prepare standard concrete sources because concrete is limited in pretreatment due to various constituent materials and high density. In addition, the concrete sample obtained by core drill is a volumetric source, which requires geometric correction for sample diameter and self absorption correction for sample density. Therefore in recent years, many researchers are working on the calculation of effective correction factors using Monte carlo simulation instead of measuring them using a standard source. In this study we calculated, using Geant4, one of the Monte carlo codes, the correction factors for the various diameter and density of the concrete core sample at the gamma ray energy emitted from the nuclides 152Eu and 60Co, which are the most generated in radioactive concrete.
The HI absorption against bright continuum source provides a unique opportunity to measure spin temperature of the neutral hydrogen gas. We find three cases among the sample of the VIVA (VLA Imaging of Virgo galaxies in Atomic gas) study with self absorption of strong central continuum by galactic HI gas. Using the HI flux ratio of emission and absorption, we constrain the spin temperature of the neutral hydrogen gas on their disk. The HI absorption is marginally resolved in these galaxies, which also allows us to probe the kinematics of the absorbing gas. All three galaxies are severely stripped in HI due to the intra cluster medium (ICM). We discuss the influence of environmental processes on the temperature and kinematics of HI in these galaxies.

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of self-efficacy, hope, and resilience, which are factors of the positive psychology capital of the re-startup CEO, on the quality of decision-making through the absorption capacity, and the effect of the re-startup's absorption capacity. In particular, this study was started from the question of how positive psychological capital would affect to the re-startup CEO. The survey was conducted from re-founders who received funding from Korea SMEs & Startups Agency. And 144 sample data were analyzed by using SPSS 24.0 for descriptive statistics and by using Smart PLS 3.0. for SEM. The factors of Positive Psychological Capital were extracted to three factors: self-efficacy, hope, and resilience. As a result, it is shown that self-efficacy had a positive effect on potential absorption capacity, and hope had no effect on potential absorption capacity, and positive effects on realized absorption capacity. Resilience has been shown to have a positive effect on potential absorption and realized absorption capacity. It has been shown that potential absorption and realized absorption have a positive effect on the quality of decision making. This study is intended to provide theoretical and practical implications.
