  • In this study, we investigated the mechanism of cell death in rhabdovirus-infected cells, chinook salmon embryonic cell line (CHSE-2l4) infected with hirame rhabdovirus (HIRRV). Studies using light microscopy, fluorescence microscopy, TUNEL method, electron microscopy, and agarose gel electrophoresis revealed changes in the cell morphology and DNA fragmentation indicative of apoptosis in early infection. It was observed that HIRRV induced apoptosis as well as necrosis in infected cells.

  • We decided Miomotegawa river was the object of our investigation since it is one of the most important salmon rivers in Japan. A great number of salmonshave returned to the river, and it was expected to contain relatively lower cation concentrations since granite is widely distributed in the river catchment area. The concentration of calcium and magnesium were less than a half of that of other major rivers. The concentration of analyzed parameters indicating water quality effect on salmons, $NO_{3},\;SO_{4}\;and\;NH_{4}$, were 1.37, 4.08 and 0.01mg/l, respectively. Most parameters down stream were greater in concentration than in the upper stream.

  • For identification of morphometric characteristics in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, coho salmon, O. kisutch, and their allotriploid, twenty one body traits were measured, and the ratios of each trait to fork length, length from postorbital to the origin of caudal fin and head length were calculated. The ratios of fin length to fin height in anal, dorsal and adipose fins showed significant differences among these two species and their allotriploid $(p\leq0.01)$. Allotriploid could be distinguished easily from two parents species in the ratios of length of origin of ventral fin to fork length and anal fin length to anal fin height.

  • Sperm motility of salmonid fishes is suppressed by external $K^{+}$ and initiated by decrease of $K^{+}$ concentration surrounding the sperm. It was shown that the decrease in external $K^{+}$ concentration induced not only the initiation of sperm motility, but also hyperpolarization of the plasma membrane and synthesis of cAMP in the sperm of rainbow trout, steelhead trout, and masu salmon. Inhibitors of $K^{+}$ channels, especially voltage-dependent $K^{+}$ channels, inhibited these three reactions, and the inhibitions were abolished by subsequent addition of a $K^{+}$ ionophore, valinomycin, suggesting that $K^{+}$ efflux through the $K^{+}$ channel contributes to rapid changes in the membrane potential of sperm and cAMP synthesis, thereby resulting in the initiation of sperm motility of salmonid fishes.

  • Until 2012, a total of 48 cases of diphyllobothriasis had been reported in Korea, all of which were morphologically identified as Diphyllobothrium latum. However, some of these specimens were analyzed by nucleotide sequencing of the mitochondrial cox1 gene, which showed that all were D. nihonkaiense, not D. latum. After that, 3 further cases of diphyllobothriasis were confirmed as D. nihonkaiense. In the present study, 3 new cases of D. nihonkaiense were detected from 2011 through 2013. The hosts were infected through consumption of salmonid fishes, such as the trout or salmon, and 2 of them experienced severe diarrhea prior to proglottid passage. All of the tapeworms were confirmed to be D. nihonkaiense by genetic identification. This proved again that most diphyllobothriasis in Korea have been caused by D. nihonkaiense.

  • In enumerating salmon spawning population by the tag-recovery method, the error caused by the emigration of the tagged fish into the non-statistical area and the misjudgement of the tagged fish as untagged, which is caused by bear predation, appear to give a bias to the estimate of population size. Efforts were made in the present study to remove such bias by estimating population size under certain assumtion and by introducing a correction equation for the sample tag-ratios.

  • This study was implemented to investigate the anion and cation concentrations of Miomotegawa river since it is one of the most important salmon rivers in Japan. A great number of salmons have returned to the river, and it was expected to contain relatively lower cation concentrations since granite is widely distributed in the river catchment area. The anion and cation concentrations of station 1 except $NH_4{^+}$ were higher than those of other stations. The concentrations of $Na^+,\;K^+,\;Mg^{2+},\;Ca^{2+}$, and $Cl^-$ at station 2 were 8.61, 1.06, 1.84, 4.47, and 14.5mg/l, respectively. In the case of $NH_4{^+},\;NO_3{^-}$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$, they were 0.04, 2.99 and 5.31mg/l, respectively at station 2 of down stream. However, at station 5 of upstream, they were 0.01, 1.37 and 4.08mg/l, respectively, which were relatively lower than that of downstream.

  • The Yangyang Pumped Storage Power Plant is being constructed by Korea Electric Power Corporation in Namdae-Chun River, Korea. The Yangyang Pumped Storage Power Plant has 1000MW capacity with upper reservior, lower reservior, hydrauric tunnel and underground power plant facilities. But NGO(Non Governmental Groups) and residents are worried about the power plant construction because of some problems, as follows. (1) Namdae-Chun River is principal salmon returning river in Korea. (2) Namdae-Chun River is main water supply source of the Yangyang country. So, brief explanation of Environmental Impacts Assessment executed by Korea Electric Power Corporation, main environmental impacts and countermeasures will be introduced.

  • Two viruses were isolated from kidney and spleen tissues of goldfish(Carasius auratus) and the ovarian fluid of chum salmon(Oncorhynchus keta). Both viruses replicated and produced cytopathic effect in EPC, CHSE-214, and CHH-1 cell lines at $15^{\circ}C$. The isolates were resistant to pH 3 and choloroform. Antiserum to infections pancreatic necrosis virus(IPNV) serotype VR 299 neutralized the infectivity of both of the isolates. Electron microscopy showed that the particles had typical IPNV particle morphology with average diameters of 55nm, This paper describes the first isolation of viruses infecting cultured fish in Korea.

  • Salmon calcitonin (sCT) is a therapeutic polypeptide hormone consisting of 32 amino acids (3432 Da). As with other bioactive peptide therapeutics, however, therapeutic use of sCT has been limited due to the problems of short circulating half-life and rapid proteolytic degradation. To get over this problem, the three positional isomers of mono-PEGylated sCT were prepared and among these, the best drug candiate for nasal application was chosen. (omitted)
