  • Insects and nematodes associated with crops growing in plastic film houses were surveyed throughout the southern part of Korea at Jinju, Jiphyeon, Geumsan, Hapcheon, Changyeong, Namji, Milyang, Kimhae, Busan, Sooncheon and Gwangyang from December of 1984 to December of 1985. The phytonematodes representing six families, nine genera and nine species, and the insects representing four orders, seventeen families, twenty-three genera and twenty-four species were identified. The mite also caused problem on the leaves of strawberry and watermelon. Of these Meloidogyne incognita and Aphis gossyphii were most important ones. Aphelenchoides fragariae and M. hapla, however dominant nematodes on strawberry. M. incognita was always detected from pepper plants which were heavily infected with Phytophthora capsici. Tomato roots were readily infected with root-knot nematodes in non-sterilized upland surface soil. However, tomato were growing-vigorouly free from nematode damage in the upland surface soil treated by nematicide or in the paddy soil. A few galls were developed even in the upland subsoil at 60cm below surface. Soil salinity affected profoundly the host-root-knot nematode interaction: the numerous galls were developed on the tomato roots at EC $1mS/cm^2$ followed by 4mS and 2mS, but few galls were at 6mS.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the enviromental quality and the growth of transplanted pen shell, Atrinna pectinata japonica. Followings are the results of growth of transplanted pen shell with respect to the shell size groups from the natural habitat (Usando) in May 1995, and cultivated upto November in the transplantated area (Soomoonri). The water depth of transplantated area andnatural habitat were 3m, 20~25m, respectively. The seawater temperature of the two culturing farms were ranged of 10.9~$27.8^{\circ}C.$, 8.5~$30.0^{\circ}C.$, respectively at the lowest in November adn the highest in July. The seawater salinity of the two areas were ranged of 29.54~35.26$^0\prime\infty$, 28.75~36.31$^0\prime\infty$, respectively at the lowest in July and the highest in November. The phosphoric acid ($PO_4$-P) of the two areas were 0.09~$1.14 ^{\mu}$g-at/l, 0.23~$1.33 ^{\mu}$g-at/l, respectively at the lowest in June and the highest in September. The bottom type of the two areas was a silty mud, 85.23% (82.17~87.26%) in natural habitat and 92.12% (90.76~92.94$^0\prime\infty$) in transplanted area. In this study area, phytoplankton were composed of 19 species. Of these 19 species, Skeletonema costatum was dominant species in seawater between natural habitat and transplantatied area, and 157 cells/ml, 165 cells/ml at August respectively. Stock of phytoplankton in transplantated area were more than those of natural habitat except June and November. The growth of shell length, shell height, total weight, soft part weight and posterior adductor muscle weight of pen shell on different size groups (SL 10, 10~15, 15~20, 20cm) were excellent in shell length of 10cm group, and 99.32%, 107.66%, 871.09%, 951.26% and 1,223.76%, respectively. The survival rate of pen shell was 98.10% in the shell length of 10cm groups, 90.35~94.76% in the others groups. The growth of shell length, total weight, soft part weight and posterior adductor muscle weight of pen shell in transplantated area were more 1.3, 2.6, 2.7 and 4.5 times than those of natural habitat.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate effects of immature compost on the amount of nutrient content, heavy metal concentration, and application rate that were used for lettuce cultivation. The characteristics of the two composts (Compost A (CA) was immature compost and Compost B (CB) was mature compost) were evaluated upon mixing with commercial soil at 0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% (w/w). The poor chemical characteristics were appeared by use of immature compost as soil amendment; the 50% and 75% rates were weakly acidic at pH 5.39 and 5.50, respectively. The total carbon content at using of 75% of the immature compost and mature compost increased the most to 14.5 and 6.5% and it significantly increased concentrations of the total nitrogen and phosphorus compared to control. As for 75% mature compost rate increased significantly the concentrations of Cu ($128mg\;kg^{-1}$), Zn ($260mg\;kg^{-1}$), Pb ($0.32mg\;kg^{-1}$) and, Cd ($0.48mg\;kg^{-1}$) compared to control, and the highest As concentration increased significantly at 75% and 50% (6.69 and $6.28mg\;kg^{-1}$) including in 25% immature compost as $6.48mg\;kg^{-1}$. However, all of the high compost rates significantly decreased the shoot biomass of lettuce. The immature compost was potentially amended at an application rate of 25% due to a slight salinity and low risk to heavy metal uptake on lettuce growth. This use may be available if the rate is lower than that used in this trial.

  • Effect of density (30, 40, 65, 90 or 120/cage) of lantern and bottom cages on growth of the ark shell, Scapharca satowi was studied in the Korean west coast from April 2000 to October 2001, when the following range of environmental conditions prevailed : temperature : 4.2 -25.5 $^{\circ}C, salinity : 30.23-32.$15\textperthousand, dissolved oxygen : 5.12-7.16 $ml$/l, pH : 7.84-8.17, phosphate : 0.22-0.56 $\mu $M, dissolved inorganic nitrogen : 3.16-9.10 $\mu $M, suspended solid : 7.6-17.9 mg/l, chemical oxygen demand: 0.46-1.61 mg/l and chlorophyll-a : 0.92-5.93 $\mug/l. Daily growth rate of shell length ranged from 0.066 to 0.071 mm/day for the lantern net cages, and from 0.079 to 0.082 mm/day for the bottom cages. Total weight also ranged from 0.067 to 0.082 g/day in the lantern net cages, as against 0.099 to 0.114 g/day in the bottom cages. Hemoglobin content of S. satowi (55 mm shell length), which was about 3.9 g/dl during february, 2001, increased to 6.0 and 7.0 g/dl during October, 2001 in animals culture in the lantern and bottom cages, respectively. ANOVA test of the growth rate showed that the growth rate of S. satowi, was significantly dependent on rearing density and the tested culture methods (P < 0.0001). The daily growth rate of the shell length was more significantly correlated with water temperature; the growth rate of shell length and total weight showed a tendency decrease with decreasing temperature. In cages suspended at the bottom, not only the increase shell weight but also the meat obtainable from comparable sized S. satowi was greater. Survival decreased with increasing density and was optimal at the density of 30 individual/cage.

  • In order to estimate the effect of nutrients addition for phytoplankton growth and community compositons in spring and summer season, we investigated the abiotic and biotic factors of surface and bottom waters at 20 stations of inner and offshore areas in Gwangyang Bay, Korea. Nutrient additional experiments were also conducted to identify any additional nutrient effects on phytoplankton assemblage using the surface water for the assay. Bacillariophyceae occupied more than 90% of total phytoplankton assembleges. Of these, diatom Eucampia zodiacus and Skeletonema costatum-like species was mainly dominated in spring and summer, respectively. Here, we can offer the season why the two diatom population densities were maintained at high levels in both seasons. First, light transparency of spring season in the euphotic zone was greatly improved in the bay. This improvement is one of important factor as tigger of increase in E. zodiacus population. Second, low salinity and high nutrient sources supplied by Seomjin River discharge are a main cue for strong bottom-up effects on S. costatum-like species during the summer rainy season. Based on the algal bio-assays, although maximum growth rate of phytoplankton communities at inner bay (St.8) were similar to those of outer bay (St.20), half-saturation constant ($K_s$) for phosphate at outer bay was slightly lower than those of inner bay. This implied that adapted cells in low nutrient condition of outer bay may have enough grown even the low phosphate and they also have a competitive advantage against other algal species under low nutrient condition. In particular, efficiency of N (+) addition in summer season was higher compared to control and P added experiments. In the bay, silicon was not a major limiting factor for phytoplankton growth, whereas nitrogen (N) was considered as a limiting factor during spring and summer. Therefore, a sufficient silicate supply form water mixing Si recycled from diatom decomposition and river water is favorable form maintaining diatom ecosystems in Gwangyang Bay.

  • The effect of environmental forcing on picophytoplankton distribution pattern was investigated in the tropical and subtropical western Pacific (TSWP) and the East Sea in September, 2002, and the continental shelf of the East China Sea (C-ECS) in August, 2003. The abundance of picophytoplankton populations, Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus and picoeukaryotes were determined by flow cytometry analyses. Picophytoplankton vertical profiles and integrated abundance $(0\sim100\;m)$ were compared with these three physiochemically different regions. Variation patterns of integrated cell abundance of Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus in these three regions showed contrasting results. Synechococcus showed average abundance of $84.5X10^{10}\;cells\;m^{-2}$, in the TSWP, $305.6X10^{10}\;cells\;m^{-2}$ in the C-ECS, and $125.4X10^{10}\;cells\; m^{-2}$ in the East Sea where increasing cell concentrations were observed in the region with abundant nutrient. On the other hand, Prochlorococcus showed average abundance of $504.5X10^{10}\;cells\;m^{-2}$ in the TSWP, $33.2x10^{10}\;cells\;m^{-2}$ in the C-ECS, and $130.2X10^{10}\;cells\;m^{-2}$ in the East Sea exhibiting a distinctive pattern of increasing cell abundance in oligotrophic warm water. Although picoeukaryotes showed a similar pattern to Synechococcus, the abundance was 1/10 of Synechococcus. Synechococcus and picoeukaryotes showed ubiquitous distribution whereas Prochlorococcus generally did not appear in the C-ECS and the East Sea with low salinity environment. The average depth profiles for Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus displayed uniform abundance in the surface mixed layer with a rapid decrease below the surface mixed layer. for Prochlorococcus, a similar rapid decreasing trend was not observed below the surface mixed layer of the TSWP, but Prochlorococcus continued to show high cell abundance even down to 100 m depth. Picoeukaryotes showed uniform abundance along $0\sim100\;m$ depth in the C-ECS, and abundance maximum layer appeared in the East Sea at $20\sim30\;m$ depth.

  • Scuticociliatosis has badly settled one of most damaging diseases during the seedling production process of olive flounder. Paralichthys olivaceus in Korea. We isolated a new type of Scuticociliate from flounder. The parasite metamorphoses to ciliate and cyst phases with each other by environmental changes and survive for a relatively long span. The ciliate was measured average 41.8 ${\mu}m$ in length and 21.0 ${\mu}m$ in width, and cyst was 17.0 ${\mu}m$ and 13.5 ${\mu}m$, respectively. Nutritional condition was determined as a major parameter of metamorphosing between ciliate and cyst stages. The ciliate transforms to a cyst stage because of food shortage, and the cyst returns to a ciliate stage with a favorite environmental condition and shows active growth and reproduction. The ciliate multiplied at the maximal density of $2.9 {\times} 10^5 {m\ell}^{-1}$cells in vitro cultivation at $15 ^{\circ}C$temperature using MS BHI medium and bacterial food sources. The ciliate could be proliferated at a 2.5 to $30 ^ \circ}C$ temperature range, pH 6 to 9, and 1 to 55 ppt salinity. Particularly, it survived over one week at $0 ^{\circ}C$temperature showing a high resistance against unfavorable environmental conditions. And the cyst survived for 320 days in the condition of $5 ^{\circ}C$with no feeding, but its survival period was markedly shortened in higher temperature conditions. The chemotherapeutants (formalin and hydrogen peroxide) were clarified as effective chemicals against the ciliate during in vitro trials, but the effect of therapeutants differed in proportion, depending upon the density and the bathing time of chemical compounds.

  • In order to understand the dynamic characteristics of water column environments in the Western Pacific seamount area (approximately $150.2^{\circ}E$, $20^{\circ}N$), we investigated the water mass and the behavior of water column parameters such as dissolved oxygen, inorganic nutrients (N, P), and chlorophyll-a. Physico-chemical properties of water column were obtained by CTD system at the nine stations which were selected along the east-west and south-north direction around the seamount (OSM14-2) in October 2014. From the temperature-salinity diagram, the main water masses were separated into North Pacific Tropical Water and Thermocline Water in the surface layer, North Pacific Intermediate Water in the intermediate layer, and North Pacific Deep Water in the bottom layer, respectively. Oxygen minimum zone (OMZ, mean $O_2$ $73.26{\mu}M$), known as dysoxic condition ($O_2<90{\mu}M$), was distributed in the depth range of 700~1,200 m throughout the study area. Inorganic nutrients typified by nitrite + nitrate and phosphate showed the lowest concentration in the surface mixed layer and then gradually increased downward with representing the maximum concentration in the OMZ, with lower N:P ratio (13.7), indicating that the nitrogen is regarded as limiting factor for primary production. Vertical distribution of water column parameters along the east-west and south-north station line around the seamount showed the effect of bottom water inflowing at around 500 m deep in the western and southern region, and concentrations of water column parameters in the bottom layer (below 2,500 m deep) of the western and southern region were differently distributed comparing to those of the other side regions (eastern and northern). The value of Excess N calculated from Redfield ratio (N:P=16:1) represented the negative value throughout the study area, which indicated the nitrogen sink dominant environments, and relative higher value of Excess N observed in the bottom layer of western and southern region. These observations suggest that the topographic features of a seamount influence the circulation of bottom current and its effects play a significant role in determining the behavior of water column environmental parameters.

  • To increase the marketability of Dolsan leaf mustard Kimchi, seasonings were prepared by sea tangle and Lentinus edodes. Gat Kimchi A (GK-A) and Gat Kimchi B (GK-B) were prepared by addition of complex seasoning with Sea tangle (CSS), complex seasoning with Lentinus edodes (CSL), respectively and evaluated the quality characteristics. GK-A contained high minerals and dietary fiber and showed the effect of delaying pH-lowering and acidity-rising. There were no significant differences in salinity test after 70 days. Reducing sugar of test groups was higher than control. During the fermentation, Leuconostoc sp. was grown in GK-A and GK-B than control. Growth of control's Lactobacillus sp. increased 20 days after. Up to 30 days, lightness of control was high. Yellowness were increased browning potential in GK-B, 20 days after. From the initial to 10 days, Hardness of GK-A showed higher than the others. glutamic acid and aspartic acid content of GK-A was higher significantly than the others in the entire fermentation period (p<0.05). At 0, 10, 30 days, sweet-tasty amino acids of GK-A showed a significantly higher level than the others (p<0.05). From 10 days to 40 days of fermentation, the sensory evaluation of GK-A is better than the other groups. Comprehensively reviewed the above results, the conclusion is as follows: CSS made with sea tangle as a main ingredient. GK-A by seasoning the CSS to 90 g GK-A is expected as a new Dolsan leaf mustard products that can provide flavor and nutrition to the consumer at the same time.
