This study was conducted to identify the appropriate nitrogen fertilizer application rate for improving rice quality in tidal reclaimed area, at the Gyehwado substation of the Honam Agricultural Research Institute during 2002-2(103. The experimental fields contained 0.1% (low salinity) and 0.3-0.4% (medium salinity) Nacl in soil solution. Plant height at panicle formation stage was tall ay heavy nitrogen level and the effect of heavy nitrogen was higher in low than in high soil salinity condition. Heading date was not affected by applied nitrogen levels from 8 to 16 kg/10a in low soil salinity condition but it was one day later in 24 kg/10a nitrogen level when compared with the standard nitrogen level,20 kg/10a. In middle soil salinity condition, the heading date was one day earlier in 8 to 16 kg/10a and similar in 24 kg/10a, when compared with 20 kg/10a nitrogen level. And also it was four days later in middle than in low soil salinity condition. In low soil salinity condition, grain number $\textrm{m}^2$ increased but ripened grain ratio decreased as the nitrogen application increased and finally, milled rice yield was not different among heavy nitrogen application levels compared with 12 kg/10a. Head rice ratio was high and protein content was low in 12 kg/10a or lower nitrogen level. In middle soil salinity condition, grain number $\textrm{m}^2$ increased and ripened grain ratio was not affected as the nitrogen application increased. And finally, milled rice yield increased with increasing nitrogen application levels, Head rice ratio was high and protein content was not affected by nitrogen application levels. Therefore, on the basis of milled rice yield and rice grain quality inreclaimed land, the appropriate nitrogen application level would be 12 kg/10a in low soil salinity condition and 20 kg/10a in middle soil salinity condition.
Zeaxanthin is an important pigment in the photo-protection mechanism of microalgae. However, zeaxanthin epoxidase, an enzyme involved in the accumulation and conversion of zeaxanthin, has not been extensively studied in microalgae. In this work, we report the expression pattern of zeaxanthin epoxidase in Dunaliella tertiolecta (DtZEP) at different light and diverse salinity conditions. To confirm the responsiveness to light conditions, the ZEP expression pattern was investigated in photoperiodic (16 h of light and 8 h of dark) and continuous (24 h of light and 0 h of dark) light conditions. mRNA expression levels in photoperiodic conditions fluctuated along with the light/dark cycle, whereas those in continuous light remained unchanged. In varying salinity conditions, the highest mRNA and protein levels were detected in cells cultured in 1.5 M NaCl, and ZEP expression levels in cells shifted from 0.6 M NaCl to 1.5 M NaCl increased gradually. These results show that mRNA expression of DtZEP responds rapidly to the light/dark cycle or increased salinity, whereas changes in protein synthesis do not occur within a short period. Taken together, we show that DtZEP gene expression responds rapidly to light irradiation and hyperosmotic stress. In addition, ZEP expression patterns in light or salinity conditions are similar to those of higher plants, even though the habitat of D. tertiolecta is different.

As an early warning system to reduce the damage of aquacultured mollusks due to low salinity water, we investigated the possibility of a biomonitoring system measuring the shell valve movement (SVM) of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) by using the Hall element sensor. In high salinity water of 27 psu, SVMs of Pacific oyster showed spikes which mean a relatively fast closing condition after opened condition of average 10-15 mm, and then the SVM showed back to opening condition slower than closing speed. In water salinity of 20-27 psu, the SVMs were similar to that of 27 psu. However, below 17 psu, it showed abnormal valve movements such as spending more time for shell closure. In 10 psu, we could not detected SVMs due to closed condition during experiment periods. Thus, if we quickly detect abnormal environmental variations like low salinity using bio-monitoring of SVM, it may be contribute to increased productivity by dramatically reducing damages in aquaculture.

In order to investigate the relation between the environmental factors influencing on the fluctuation of fishing condition and the catch of anchovy in gill nets in the coastal waters of Yosu, five oceanographic factors, i.e., water temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a and the catch of anchovy in gill nets are observed from June 6 to August 12 in 1993. The results obtained are summerized as follows: 1) The water temperature ranged from 16.$0^{\circ}C$ to 22.6$^{\circ}C$ and the salinity from 30.13$\textperthousand$ to 33.65$\textperthousand$. the water temperature and salinity showed no significant influence on the catch of anchovy, but the catch did not expose high values in low temperature and salinity. 2) The catch of anchovy increased with the amount of chlorophyll-a. It is therefore emphasized that the amount of chlorophyll-a is the greatest one of environmental factors influencing on the catch of anchovy.

We examined the possibility of developing an early monitoring system using the shell valve movement activity of Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) for early detection of low salinity water in coastal areas. At salinity levels of 30 psu and 20 psu, SVMs were detected $7.32{\pm}3.21times/hr$ and $7.11{\pm}3.90times/hr$, respectively, The patterns and times of SVMs were not significantly different between the two experiment phases. However, at 10 psu and 5 psu, shell valves were observed to be permanently closed in all experiments. Under combined condition (Group 1: temperature $15^{\circ}C$${\times}$ salinity 15 psu), SVMs were observed from 20 psu to 30 psu over a 2 - 3 hr period, and then remained closed. In Group 2 (temperature $30^{\circ}C$${\times}$ salinity 15 psu), SVMs were observed, which indicated that the physiological condition of the oysters reached a critical point. Thus, it may be possible to utilize SVMs as an early warning signal for low salinity water.
This study was analyzed to determine the cause of red tide at 10 and 30 days antecedental rainfall, stage and discharge in the Taehwa River, tidal data of Ulsan port, also, it was analyzed variation of red tide population, salinity, BOD, COD, T-N, T-P at S1, S2 each point. Most of the red tide in the Taehwa River occurred by provision of proper nutrients with antecedent, the proximity between discharge and low-flow capacity, and stage and discharge of stabilized condition after the sea water was inflowed by maximum tide difference. Red tide population is not nearly related to the change of salinity, the Taehwa River seems specific features of Non-coastal rivers downstream, because red tide was occurred when salinity quite low-end condition.
This study investigated the optimum salinity and temperature conditions for mass culture of the brackish water flea, Diaphanosoma celebensis. Community and individual cultures of flea were maintained in 1 L beakers and 3 mL vessels (of a 12-well culture plate), respectively, and fed green algae, Tetraselmis suecica. In salinity experiments ranging from 5 to 34 psu, continuous growth of flea populations was found up to 34 psu. However, the specific growth rate and life span of females showed decreasing tendencies with the increase of salinity. The highest maximum density and offspring number were 33.6 individuals (ind.)/mL and 55.3 ind. at 10 psu, respectively. In the temperature experiments ranging from 20 to $40^{\circ}C$, population growth of D. celebensis increased continuously until $35^{\circ}C$ and then decreased over $40^{\circ}C$. The specific growth rate was significantly higher at 25 and $30^{\circ}C$ than at 20 and $40^{\circ}C$. Female life span tended to decrease with temperature increase. The highest maximum density and offspring number were 52.3 ind./mL and 46.0 ind. at $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. These results suggest that the optimum salinity and temperature for mass culture of D. celebensis may be 10 psu and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively.

Salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses that severely affect crop production throughout the world; especially rice plant which is generally categorized as a typical glycophyte as it cannot grow in the presence of salinity. Phenotypic resistance of salinity is expressed as the ability to survive and grow in a salinity condition. Salinity resistance has, at least implicitly, been treated as a single trait. Physiological studies of rice suggest that a range of characteristics (such as low shoot sodium concentration, compartmentation of salt in older rather than younger leaves, high potassium concentration, high $K^+/Na^+$ ratio, high biomass and plant vigour) would increase the ability of the plant to cope with salinity. Criteria for evaluating and screening salinity tolerance in crop plants vary depending on the level and duration of salt stress and the plant developmental stage. Plant growth responses to salinity vary with plant life cycle; critical stages sensitive to salinity are germination, seedling establishment and flowering. We have established a standard protocol to evaluate large rice germplasms for overall performance based on specific physiological traits for salt tolerance at seedling stage. This protocol will help in identifying germplasms which can perform better in the presence of different salinity treatments based on single trait and also combination of different physiological traits. The salt tolerant germplasm can be taken forward into developing better varieties by conventional breeding and exploring genes for salt tolerance.

A laterally-averaged X-Z numerical model with transformed coordinates is developed to analyze the salinity dispersion in estuaries. Gravitational term, salinity variations with respect to the water depth. and re-evaluation of , salinity boundary condition are examined. Especially. the improvements in stability and accuracy of the numerical algorithm are made by adopting the fractional step method for the dispersion term of the governing equation. The model being applied to the Keum River Esturary, physical and numerical properties of Manning's n and dispersion coefficients are analyzed. Salinity intrusion into the river, influence of upstream river inflows, and salinity distribution for spring/neap tide are also examined.
To identify the new source of breeding materials for rice salt tolerance, the salinity tolerance of thirty-four varieties was evaluated under 0.5% saline condition at seedling stage. The salinity score showed highly significant correlations to dry weight and dead leaf ratio. The tested varieties were classified into three groups by visual score, reduction ratio of dry weight, and dead leaf ratio. Eighteen varieties were classified as the highly tolerant group (salinity scores of 1.3-3.7), seven varieties were fallen into the tolerant group (salinity scores of 4.2-5.8), and others were susceptible (salinity scores of 6.7-9.0). In highly tolerant group, most indica varieties including Getu, Dikwee and Kuatic Putic, didn't exsert a panicle under the Korean climate. But six varieties, Xiangcho V, Annapuruna, HP 3319-2wx-6-3-1, Giza 175, and GZ 2447-S-17, GZ 4255-6-3 were suitable to the Korean climate, and their heading date (6-16, August) and culm length (65-78㎝) were similar to the Korean varieties. Accordingly, these varieties can be utilized as crossing materials for the salt tolerance in japonica rice.
