  • The extension of design life among power plants is increasingly becoming a world-wide trend. Kori #1 unit in Korea is operating two cycle. It has two man-ways for tube inspection in a steam generator which is one of the important components in a nuclear power plant. Especially, stud bolts fur man-way cover have damaged by disassembly and assembly several times and degradation for bolt materials for long term operation. It should be evaluated and compared by ASME Code criteria for integrity evaluation. Integrity evaluation criteria which has been made by the manufacturer is not applied on the stud bolts of nuclear pressure vessels directly because it is controlled by the yield stress of ASME Code. It can apply evaluation criteria through FEM analysis to damaged female threads and to evaluated safety fer helical-coil method which is used according to Code Case-N-496-1. From analysis results, we found .that it is the same results between stress intensity which got from FEM analysis on damaged female threads over 10% by manufacture integrity criteria and 2/3 yield strength criteria on ASME Code. It was also confirmed that the helical-coil repair method would be safe.

  • The automobile industry is ubiquitous and involved in the handling of metal, machines, electricity, electron, and chemistry including the products of many types of processes. In the process of installing engines as a part of the car assembly line, the measurement and correction of the position of the stud bolts consumes a great deal of time. Additionally, defective parts must be manually removed. In the process of engine installation, the speed of the operation, related to the economics of vehicle assembly, is dependent upon measuring the precise position of the stud bolt, reducing the length of correction time, and increasing the working rate. This paper deals with securing the economic feasibility of the manufacturing process, increasing the safety by removing risk factors in the working area, and improving and equalizing the quality by developing an automatic system for the process involving a stud bolt.

  • The importance and role of pre-/in-service inspection(PSI/ISI) for nuclear power plant(NPP) components are intimately related to plant design, safety, reliability, operation, etc. In this paper, for an effective and efficient management of large amounts of PSI/ISI data in NPPs, an intelligent database program(WS-IDPIN) for PSI/ISI data management of NPP was developed. WS-IDPIN program enables the prompt extraction of previously conducted PSI/ISI conditions and results so that the time-consuming data management, painstaking data processing and analysis in the past are avoided. Furthermore, development of ISI UT auto flaw evaluation and acceptance module based on ASME Code Sec. XI were presented. This module can be used for any angle beam examination from flat plate to spherical shapes as selected by the proper azimuthal angle. This program can be further developed as a unique PSI/ISI data management expert system.

  • Passive containment cooling systems (PCCSs) have been actively studied to improve the inherent safety of nuclear power plants. Hered, we present two concepts, open-loop PCCS (OL-PCCS) and closed-loop PCCS (CL-PCCS), applicable to the PWR with a concrete-type containment. We analyzed the heat-removal performance and flow instability of these PCCS concepts using the GOTHIC code. In both cases, PCCS performance improved when a passive containment cooling heat exchanger (PCCX) was installed in the lower part of the containment building. The OL-PCCS was found to be superior in terms of heat-removal performance. However, in terms of flow instability, the OL-PCCS was more vulnerable than the CL-PCCS. In particular, the possibility of flow instability was higher when the PCCX was installed in the upper part of the containment. Therefore, the installation location of the OL-PCCS should be restricted to minimize flow instability. Conversely, a CL-PCCS can be installed without any positional restriction by adjusting the initial system pressure within the loop, which eliminates flow instability. These results could be used as base data for the thermo-hydraulic evaluation of PCCS in PWR with a large dry concrete-type containment.

  • Traditionally nuclear thermal hydraulic and nuclear safety has relied on numerical simulations to predict the system response of a nuclear power plant either under normal operation or accident condition. However, this approach may sometimes be rather time consuming particularly for design and optimization problems. To expedite the decision-making process data-driven models can be used to deduce the statistical relationships between inputs and outputs rather than solving physics-based models. Compared to the traditional approach, data driven models can provide a fast and cost-effective framework to predict the behavior of highly complex and non-linear systems where otherwise great computational efforts would be required. The objective of this work is to develop an AI algorithm to predict the peak fuel cladding temperature as a metric for the successful implementation of FLEX strategies under extended station black out. To achieve this, the model requires to be conditioned using pre-existing database created using the thermal-hydraulic analysis code, MARS-KS. In the development stage, the model hyper-parameters are tuned and optimized using the talos tool.

  • A lot of hardwares are allocated on the satellite to perform the attitude control. Sun sensor is very important hardware to acquire the initial attitude after separation from launcher and to maintain the safety attitude from the satellite anomaly operation. So the allocation of the sun sensor to acquire the field of view and the attitude control design using it, are critical work in the beginning of development. Number of Sun sensor for GEO-KOMPSAT2 is reduced with respect to COMS due to star tracker usage. The additional sun sensor using COMS heritage is considered. In this paper, it is described the analysis and the results on the method for the safety improvement which is to enlarge the field of view and to consider the harness connection of P/R-side of the sun sensor.

  • The International Maritime Organization is developing a maritime safety system called eNavigation in order to effectively respond to accidents occurring on board vessels. Korea is actively participating in the development of eNavigation and is developing Korean eNavigation by adding its own concept to eNavigation of the IMO. eNavigation is designed to provide various functions for marine safety. The data required for each function is various such as spatial data, relational data, file, weather grid. Therefore, there is a need for a system that can appropriately provide heterogeneous data suitable for eNavigation to each eNavigation's service system. In this paper, we analyzed the kinds of data needed for e-Navigation and designed the architecture of heterogeneous data service system that could provide these data properly.

  • The International Maritime Organization has recently strengthened its marine environment regulations. The energy efficiency index has long been an important indicator of ship design, and now, energy efficiency is being enforced for existing ships as well as new ships. To increase the energy efficiency of existing ships, methods such as retrofitting the bow bulb, selecting an optimized trim during ship operation, and installing an energy saving device have been applied. In this study, the ship resistance was numerically simulated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) under various bow and stern trim conditions. In addition, the bulb was redesigned to further improve the resistance performance under the selected trim conditions. When the improved bulb was applied, the effective horse power increased by approximately 5%. It is, however, necessary to verify whether the redesigned bulb can reduce ship resistance in waves.

  • Lately, there has been increasing research on the prediction of motion performance using artificial intelligence for the safe design and operation of ships. However, compared to conventional ships, research on small fishing boats is insufficient. In this paper, we propose a model that estimates the motion response essential for calculating the motion performance of small fishing boats using a deep neural network. Hydrodynamic analysis was conducted on 15 small fishing boats, and a database was established. Environmental conditions and main particulars were applied as input data, and the response amplitude operators were utilized as the output data. The motion response predicted by the trained deep neural network model showed similar trends to the hydrodynamic analysis results. The results showed that the high-frequency motion responses were predicted well with a low error. Based on this study, we plan to extend existing research by incorporating the hull shape characteristics of fishing boats into a deep neural network model.

  • In this paper, a simulator is designed along with S/W package for crane controllers. Due to trolley's acceleration or deceleration, cranes inherently cause swing motion of the objects in transporting heavy objects. This swing not only deteriorates the crane handling safety but also increases the processing time. To overcome these drawbacks, the fuzzy rule-based simulator is developed with inhibitory swing at final action. The computer simulation shows that the swing at initial and final positions is removed fast with small position error. The proposed simulator can be used for handling object stabley and the study of effectiveness in unmanned operation of cranes.
