The rural elderly people investigated didn't think that they were given lots of support from their families and society, and they didn't feel hopeless a lot, either. The hopelessness of the elderly people was under the negative influence of emotional support and instrumental support among the subfactors of family support, and that was affected in a negative way by affective support among the subfactors of social support. Therefore it could be said that the rural elderly people felt hopeless less when they were provided with more emotional support, more instrumental support and more affective support. Overall, social support had a negative impact on the hopelessness of the rural elderly people. The findings of the study suggest that in order to step up the improvement of rural elderly people's quality of life, a well-functioning model should be developed and applied in collaboration with local community, and the construction of a social support network is required as well.

  • Vietnam's "Doi Moi", initiated in 1986, translated to high economic growth and rapid urbanization for the country, but also widened the gap between rural and urban areas. Vietnam's National Target Program on New Rural Development for 2010-2020 was aimed at developing the rural economy and improving the living standards of rural people, but after five years the urban-rural gap remains substantial. Two of the main reasons are the lack of investment capital and lack of effective ways to mobilize community involvement. In contrast, during the 1970s, rural areas in Korea experienced huge improvements under the "Saemaul Undong" movement. The program's success at promoting sustainable development in Korea's rural areas has inspired rural programs in other developing countries. In this paper, we compare and contrast the two movements to provide explanations for the different results between the two countries. Based on this analysis, and policy implications stemming from it, we recommend resource mobilization strategies to change villagers' attitude and increase their involvement in Vietnam's rural development movement, aligning with the inclusivity principle "people know, people discuss, people do and people check".

  • Recently, the number of people who return to rural areas for farming is increasing rapidly. This attracted public attention so that the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced officially comprehensive countermeasures to help those returning to rural areas. But there is not sufficient consideration of the role of local governments in the above countermeasures. Policy package to help returning people establish themselves in rural area include many soft programs that requires governance, delicate implementation process and expertise to advise. Therefore, the local governments should have appropriate governance and perspectives.

Through these criteria, we could analyze people's perceptions of the current rural life. We would like to present this study as a base for improvement for those who seek a better life in a rural environment. The result of this study is as follows; The specific goals and need of our target group depend on individual characteristics, occupation and age etc. Therefore, the support system should sensibly consider their personal needs. In addition to this, the flow of information between these people should be changed from theoretical perspective to factual perspective. The new rural tenants obtained information on rural life mostly from private channels such as their acquaintances. Organizations responsible for providing information do not offer useful factual information on agrotechnology and financial support. Nevertheless, they are mainly focused on conceptual and ideological information.
