  • The structure performance of a sealed power facilities and the explosion simulation contains significant amounts of scatter, and variability has been characterized in material properties of the structure, a sealed space density, combustible gas volume, gas concentrativeness, ignition site, and gas volume. In order to deal with such uncertainties, structural reliability analysis calculates the failure probability and the reliability index relevant to selected limit states providing quantitative measures of these uncertainties. In this study, structure safety assessment method on the explosion of a sealed power facilities was proposed by using the response surface method (RSM).

  • This study presents algorithms for determining the fuzzy critical loads of planar steel frame structures with fixity factors of beam - column and column - base connections are modeled as triangular fuzzy numbers. The finite element method with linear elastic semi-rigid connection and Response Surface Method (RSM) in mathematical statistic are applied for problems with symmetric triangular fuzzy numbers. The ${\alpha}$ - level optimization using the Differential Evolution (DE) involving integrated finite element modeling is proposed to apply for problems with any triangular fuzzy numbers. The advantage of the proposed methodologies is demonstrated through some example problems relating to for the twenty - story, four - bay planar steel frames.

A Study on the Multi-Objective Optimization of Impeller for High-Power Centrifugal Compressor

  • In this study, a method for the multi-objective optimization of an impeller for a centrifugal compressor using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) and response surface method (RSM) was proposed. Numerical simulation was conducted using ANSYS CFX and Mechanical with various configurations of impeller geometry. Each design parameter was divided into 3 levels. A total of 15 design points were planned using Box-Behnken design, which is one of the design of experiment (DOE) techniques. Response surfaces based on the results of the DOE were used to find the optimal shape of the impeller. Two objective functions, isentropic efficiency and equivalent stress were selected. Each objective function is an important factor of aerodynamic performance and structural safety. The entire process of optimization was conducted using the ANSYS Design Xplorer (DX). The trade-off between the two objectives was analyzed in the light of Pareto-optimal solutions. Through the optimization, the structural safety and aerodynamic performance of the centrifugal compressor were increased.

  • This paper proposes a design method by varying rotor pole shape to reduce cogging torque, torque ripple and harmonics of back emf in Spoke type brushless DC(BLDC) motor. In the process of design and analysis, Response surface method(RSM) and finite-element method(FEM) are employed to get the rotor geometry and verify the results of new pole shape.

  • Design optimization of a transonic compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) using response surface method and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis has been carried out in this work. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was used in the flow analysis. Three design variables were selected to optimize the stacking line of the blade. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, adiabatic efficiency was successfully improved. It is also found that the design process provides reliable design of a turbomachinery blade with reasonable computing time.

  • The door stiffness is one of the important factors for the side impact. Generally, the researches have been conducted on the assembled door. A side impact door beam is installed in a door to protect occupants from the side impact. This research is only concentrated on the side impact beam and a side impact beam is designed. The cross section is defined to have an elliptic shape. An optimization problem is defined to find the design maximizing the intrusion stiffness within the specified weight. Design variables are the radii and the thickness of the ellipsoid. The analysis of the side impact is carried out by the nonlinear finite element method. The optimization problem is solved by two methods. One is the experimental design scheme using an orthogonal array. The other is the gradient-based optimization using the response surface method(RSM). Both methods have obtained the better designs than the current one.

  • There are various ways of optimizing rotor design of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors(IPMSM). In this paper, the best optimized design value was found by varying the Bridge thickness of PM in the rotor and changing Rib. The set design values were torque, 5 harmonics, 7 harmonics, and safety factor. Also, in order to make practical design value easily and quickly for optimization, Box-Behnken of Response Surface Method(RSM) method was used. Therefore, IPMSM resulted an optimized design model with high torque, low harmonics, and constant value of safety factor.

  • The conventional approximate optimization method, which uses the statistical design of experiments(DOE) and response surface method(RSM), can derive an approximated optimum results through the iterative process by a trial and error. The quality of results depends seriously on the factors and levels assigned by a designer. The purpose of this study is to propose a new technique, which is called a sequential design of experiments(SDOE), to reduce a trial and error procedure and to find an appropriate condition for using artificial neural network(ANN) systematically. An appropriate condition is determined from the iterative process based on the analysis of means. With this new technique and ANN, it is possible to find an optimum design accurately and efficiently. The suggested algorithm has been applied to various mathematical examples and a structural problem.

  • In the present study, the air jet flow characteristics of the dryer in the automatic car wash machine were numerically predicted by commercial CFD code. The effects of the dryer shape and the nozzle width variations on the performance of the automatic car wash machine were discussed. To optimize the geometric parameters, the response surface method(RSM) with CFD was used. Predicted jet velocity distributions for the optimized geometry were compared with experimental data and the comparisons show generally good agreements. Also, the performance of the dryer was improved with the optimized results.

  • This paper presents the pillar section optimization technique considering the reliability of the vehicle body structure consisted of complicated thin-walled panels. The response surface method is utilized to obtain the response surface models that describe the approximate performance functions representing the system characteristics on the section properties of the pillar and on the mass and the natural frequencies of the vehicle B.I.W. The reliability-based design optimization on the pillar sections Is performed and compared with the conventional deterministic optimization. The FORM is applied for the reliability analysis of the vehicle body structure. The developed optimization system is applied to the pillar section design considering the fundamental natural frequencies of passenger car body structure. By applying the proposed RBDO technique, it can be possible to optimize the pillar sections considering the reliability that engineers require.
