Background: Artesunate, extracted from Artemisia annua, has been proven to have anti-cancer potential. Allicin, diallyl thiosulfinate, the main biologically active compound derived from garlic, is also of interest in cancer treatment research. This object of this report was to document synergistic effects of artesunate combined with allicin on osteosarcoma cell lines in vitro and in vivo. Methods: After treatment with artesunate and allicin at various concentrations, the viability of osteosarcoma cells was analyzed by MTT method, with assessment of invasion and motility, colony formation and apoptosis. Western Blotting was performed to determine the expression of caspase-3/9, and activity was also detected after drug treatment. Moreover, in a nude mouse model established with orthotopic xenograft tumors, tumor weight and volume were monitored after drug administration via the intraperitoneal (i.p.) route. Results: The viability of osteosarcoma cells in the combination group was significantly decreased in a concentration and time dependent manner; moreover, invasion, motility and colony formation ability were significantly suppressed and the apoptotic rate was significantly increased through caspase-3/9 expression and activity enhancement in the combination group. Furthermore, suppression of tumor growth was evident in vivo. Conclusion: Our results indicated that artesunate and allicin in combination exert synergistic effects on osteosarcoma cell proliferation and apoptosis.
Single phases of multi-component oxides films, ZrTiO4 and Ta2Zr6O17, could be synthesized by using the combinatorial approach through surface sol-gel route, coating the appropriate mole ratio of 100 mM zirconium butoxide, tantalum butoxide and titanium butoxide precursors on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si (100) substrate, following pyrolysis at 450 oC, and annealing them at 770 oC. Both the films and bulks of ZrTiO4 and Ta2Zr6O17 showed very stable dielectric properties in temperature range, ?140 to 60 oC, and frequency range, 100 Hz to 1 MHz, promising their applications in wide range of temperatures and frequencies. The dielectric constants of the films were lower and a little more dependent on frequency than those of the bulks. The reduction of dielectric property in the film was mainly due to the interfacial effects that worked as series and parallel-connected capacitances toward the substantial film capacitance.
$NaCaLa_{1-x}(MoO_4)_3:Ho^{3+}/Yb^{3+}$ ternary molybdates with proper doping concentrations of $Ho^{3+}$ and $Yb^{3+}$ (x = $Ho^{3+}+Yb^{3+}$, $Ho^{3+}$ = 0.05 and $Yb^{3+}$ = 0.35, 0.40, 0.45 and 0.50) were successfully synthesized by microwave sol-gel method. Well-crystallized particles formed after heat-treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for 16 h showed a fine and homogeneous morphology with particle sizes of $3-5{\mu}m$. Under excitation at 980 nm, the UC intensities of the doped samples exhibited strong yellow emissions based on the combination of strong emission bands at 520-nm and 630-nm emission bands in the green and red spectral regions, respectively. The optimal $Yb^{3+}:Ho{3+}$ ratios were obtained at 9:1 and 10:1, as indicated by the composition-dependent quenching effect of the $Ho^{3+}$ ions. The pump power dependence of the upconversion emission intensity and the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates of the phosphors were evaluated in detail.

We demonstrate a facile route to synthesize silver chloride nanocubes and derivative nanomaterials. For the synthesis of silver chloride nanocubes, silver nitrate and hydrochloric acid were used as precursors in ethylene glycol, and poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) as a surfactant. Molar ratio of the two precursors greatly influenced the morphology and composition of the final products. As-synthesized silver chloride nanocubes showed size-dependent optical properties in the visible region of light, which is likely due to a small amount of silver clusters formed on the surface of silver chloride nanocubes. Moreover, we show for the first time that simple reduction of silver chloride nanocubes with different reducing reagents leads to the formation of delicate nanostructures such as cube-shaped silver-nanoparticle aggregates, and silver chloride nanocubes with truncated corners and with silver-nanograin decorated corners. Additionally, we quantitatively investigated for the first time the evolution of silver chloride nanocubes to silver chloride nanocubes decorated with silver nanoparticles upon exposure to e-beam. Our novel and facile synthesis of silver chloride related nanoparticles with delicately controlled morphologies could be an important basis for fabricating efficient photocatalysts and antibacterial materials.
Community Wireless Networks define the next generation wireless services. Multimedia usages for financial services over community Wireless LAN (WLAN) based mesh networks require link stability. Several new services are being proposed for multimedia over WLANs. Portable Internet Services are implemented by several wireless carriers to proliferate their customer base. However, these services are still expensive and require a central telecom/wireless carrier whose monopoly and preference defines the availability of new services. Our research project identifies the usage of these critical services in public places over the financial services backbone architecture to provide efficient easy-to-use and economical services to their customers and merchants without being dependent on the central wireless carrier. The user connects to the network using his regular WLAN NIC using the Mesh Router/Bridge interconnectivity and obtains the needed multimedia and financial services from the ATM-AP Gateway, In our proposed scenario, the ATN AP-MR use AODV protocol and MR-MC is based on 802.11g/a/b IEEE standard. We use multi path routing protocols for reducing the congestion over a particular route. We demonstrate the results of our simulations and test-bed outcome to evaluate link failure rate and oversubscription factors to eliminate network congestion and non-availability of the critical financial services.
In order to fabricate porous mullite ceramics with controlled pore structure and improved mechanical strength, a freeze casting route has been processed using camphene mixed with tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and coal fly ash/alumina as the solvent and the ceramic material, respectively. After sintering, the solidification characteristics of camphene and TBA solvent were evident in the pore morphology, i.e., dendritic and straight pore channels formed along the solidification directions of camphene and TBA ice, respectively, after sublimation. Also, the presence of microcracks was observed in the bodies sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$, mainly due to the difference in solidification volume change between camphene and TBA. The compressive strength of the sintered bodies was found generally to be dependent, in an inverse manner, on the porosity, which was mainly determined by the processing conditions. After sintering at $1300{\sim}1500^{\circ}C$ with 30~50 wt% solid loading, the resulting mullite ceramics showed porosity and compressive strength values in ranges of 83.8~43.1% and 3.7~206.8 MPa, respectively.
IAA biosynthetic pathways in a basidiomycetous yeast, Rhodosporidiobolus fluvialis DMKU-CP293, were investigated. The yeast strain showed tryptophan (Trp)-dependent IAA biosynthesis when grown in tryptophan supplemented mineral salt medium. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to further identify the pathway intermediates of Trpdependent IAA biosynthesis. The results indicated that the main intermediates produced by R. fluvialis DMKU-CP293 were tryptamine (TAM), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and tryptophol (TOL), whereas indole-3-pyruvic acid (IPA) was not found. However, supplementation of IPA to the culture medium resulted in IAA peak detection by high-performance liquid chromatography analysis of the culture supernatant. Key enzymes of three IAA biosynthetic routes, i.e., IPA, IAM and TAM were investigated to clarify the IAA biosynthetic pathways of R. fluvialis DMKU-CP293. Results indicated that the activities of tryptophan aminotransferase, tryptophan 2-monooxygenase, and tryptophan decarboxylase were observed in cell crude extract. Overall results suggested that IAA biosynthetic in this yeast strain mainly occurred via the IPA route. Nevertheless, IAM and TAM pathway might be involved in R. fluvialis DMKU-CP293.
Percutaneous osteoplasty (POP) is defined as the injection of bone cement into various painful bony lesions, refractory to conventional therapy, as an extended technique of percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP). POP can be applied to benign osteochondral lesions and malignant metastatic lesions throughout the whole skeleton, whereas PVP is restricted to the vertebral body. Common spinal metastases occur in the thoracic (70%), lumbosacral (20%), and cervical (10%) vertebrae, in order of frequency. Extraspinal metastases into the ribs, scapulae, sternum, and humeral head commonly originate from lung and breast cancers; extraspinal metastases into the pelvis and femoral head come from prostate, urinary bladder, colon, and uterine cervical cancers. Pain is aggravated in the dependent (or weight bearing) position, or during movement (or respiration). The tenderness and imaging diagnosis should match. The supposed mechanism of pain relief in POP is the augmentation of damaged bones, thermal and chemical ablation of the nociceptive nerves, and local inhibition of tumor invasion. Adjacent (facet) joint injections may be needed prior to POP (PVP). The length and thickness of the applied needle should be chosen according to the targeted bone. Bone cement is also selected by its osteoconduction, osteoinduction, and osteogenesis. Needle route should be chosen as a shortcut to reach the target bony lesions, without damage to the nerves and vessels. POP is a promising minimally invasive procedure for immediate pain relief. This review provides a technical survey for POPs in painful bony lesions.
Kinetic studies on cupric ion ($Cu^{2+}$) oxidation of 1-benzyl- and 1-aryl-1,4-dihydronicotinamides (XNAH) in aqueous solution were performed. In the presence of dioxygen ($O_2$), the reaction followed first order kinetics with respect to both XNAH and $Cu^{2+}$. The oxidation reaction was found to be independent and parallel to the acid-catalyzed hydration reaction of XNAH. The catalytic role of $Cu^{2+}$ for the oxidation of XNAH in the presence of $O_2$ was attributed to $Cu^{2+}/Cu^+$ redox cycle by the reactions with XNAH and $O_2$. The second order rate constants of the Cu2+ oxidation reaction kCu, and acid-catalyzed hydration reaction $k_H$ were strongly dependent on the nature of the substituents in 1-aryl moiety. The slopes of log $k_{Cu}$ vs log $K_H$ and log $k_{Cu}$ vs ${\sigma}_p$ of the substituents plots were 1.64 and -2.2, respectively. This revealed the greater sensitivity of the oxidation reaction rate to the electron density on the ring nitrogen than the hydration reaction rate. A concerted two-electron transfer route involving XNAH-$Cu^{2+}$ complex was proposed for mechanism of the oxidation reaction.
The tunable electronic performance of the solution-processed semiconductor metal oxide is of great significance for the printing electronics. In current work, transparent thin-film transistors (TFTs) with indium-zinc oxide (IZO) were fabricated as active layer by a simple eco-friendly aqueous route. The aqueous precursor solution is composed of water without any other organic additives and the IZO films are amorphous revealed by the X-ray diffraction (XRD). With systematic studies of atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and the semiconductor property characterizations, it was revealed that the electrical performance of the IZO TFTs is dependent on the concentration of precursor solution. As well, the optimum preparation process was obtained. The concentrations induced the regulation of the electronic performance was clearly demonstrated with a proposed mechanism. The results are expected to be beneficial for development of solution-processed metal oxide TFTs.
