  • Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) have made it easier for healthcare workers and patients to monitor patients' status continuously in real time. WBANs have complex and diverse network structures; thus, management and control can be challenging. Therefore, considering emerging Software-defined networks (SDN) with WBANs is a promising technology since SDN implements a new network management and design approach. The SDN concept is used in this study to create more adaptable and dynamic network architectures for WBANs. The study focuses on comparing the performance of two SDN controllers, POX and Ryu, using Mininet, an open-source simulation tool, to construct network topologies. The performance of the controllers is evaluated based on bandwidth, throughput, and round-trip time metrics for networks using an OpenFlow switch with sixteen nodes and a controller for each topology. The study finds that the choice of network controller can significantly impact network performance and suggests that monitoring network performance indicators is crucial for optimizing network performance. The project provides valuable insights into the performance of SDN-based WBANs using POX and Ryu controllers and highlights the importance of selecting the appropriate network controller for a given network architecture.

  • PVM provides users with a single image of high performance parallel computing machine by collecting machines distributed over a network. Low communication overhead is essential to effectively run applications on PVM based platforms. In the original PVM, three times of memory copies are required for a PVM task to send a message to a remote task, which results in performance degradation. We propose a zero-copy model using global shared memory that can be accessed by PVM tasks, PVM daemon, and network interface card(NIC). In the scheme, a task packs data into global shared memory, and notify daemon that the data is ready to be sent, then daemon routes the data to a remote task to which it is sent with no virtual data copy overhead. Experimental result reveals that the message round trip time between two machines is reduced significantly in the proposed zero-copy scheme.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm called the adaptive logarithmic increase and adaptive decrease algorithm (A-LIAD), which mainly addresses the Round-Trip Time (RTT) fairness problem in satellite networks with a very high propagation delay as an alternative to the current TCP congestion control algorithm. We defined a new increasing function in the fashion of a logarithm depending on the increasing factor ${\alpha}$, which is different from the other logarithmic increase algorithm adopting a fixed value of ${\alpha}$ = 2 leading to a binary increase. In A-LIAD, the ${\alpha}$ value is derived in the RTT function through the analysis. With the modification of the increasing function applied for the congestion avoidance phase, a hybrid scheme is also presented for the slow start phase. From this hybrid scheme, we can avoid an overshooting problem during a slow start phase even without a SACK option. To verify the feasibility of the algorithm for deployment in a high-speed and long-distance network, several aspects are evaluated through an NS-2 simulation. We performed simulations for intra- and interfairness as well as utilization in different conditions of varying RTT, bandwidth, and PER. From these simulations, we showed that although A-LIAD is not the best in all aspects, it provides a competitive performance in almost all aspects, especially in the start-up and packet loss impact, and thus can be an alternative TCP congestion control algorithm for high BDP networks including a satellite network.

  • The current implementation of TCP for the Internet is not efficient when used for Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANENTs). This is because TCP assumes that all packet losses are caused by congestion, whereas transmission errors are a main reason for packet losses in wireless networks. To remedy this situation and increase performance, we propose an end-to-end method of using propagation delays and the differences between propagation delays to distinguish the causes for packet losses. The proposed method has two characteristics: Firstly, it is energy-efficient because this solution is only initiated when a packet loss is detected. Secondly, our approach considers only the one way propagation delay and is more accurate in determining causes for packet losses than existing methods which consider round trip time. Petri net models of the proposed TCP and of the standard TCP have been built and simulations have been performed on them. Our simulation results show that the proposed approach increases throughput and reduces propagation delay compared with standard TCP.

  • A fiber-optic reference signal transmission system, which transmits the 1.4 GHz reference signal from H-maser to receiver cabin in radio telescopes, was adopted for compensating the phase changes due to temperature variation and antenna movement. At the first experiment, the remote signal's phase changed more than 15 degrees at 1.4 GHz. We found unstable components in sub-system experiments and replaced them. The main cause of unstable phase stability was the unaligned polarization axis between Laser Diode and Mach-Zehnder Modulator (MZM). The improved system stability showed $1{\times}10^{-16}$ allan standard deviation at 1,000 sec integration time with the antenna fixed. When the antenna moves in the azimuth axis, the 1.4 GHz remote signal showed the phase change smaller than 0.2 degrees.

  • In this paper, we extend the performance of bidirectional TCP connection over end-to-end network that uses transfer rate-based flow and congestion control. The sharing of a common buffer by TCP packets and acknowledgement has been known to result in an effect called ack compression, where acks of a connection arrive at the source bunched together, resulting in unfairness and degraded throughput. The degradation in throughput due to bidirectional traffic can be significant. Even in the simple case of symmetrical connections with adequate window size, the connection efficiency is improved about 20% for three levels of background traffic 2.5Mbps, 5.0Mbps and 7.5Mbps. Otherwise, the throughput of jitter is reduced about 50% because round trip delay time is smaller between source node and destination node. Also, we show that throughput curve is improved with connection rate algorithm which is proposed for TCP congetion avoidance as a function of aggressiveness threshold for three levels of background traffic 2.5Mbps, 5Mbps and 7.5Mbps. By analyzing the periodic bursty behavior of the source IP queue, we derive estimated for the maximum queue size and arrive at a simple predictor for the degraded throughput, applicable for relatively general situations.

  • Previous works for the AF(Assured Forwarding) service in the Diffserv network have no sufficient consideration on the fairness of bandwidth share based on RTTs, the target rates, and the impact of UDP against TCP. In this paper, in order to solve these problems, we propose a FDSA(Fair Differentiated Service Architecture) composed of TRA3CM(Target rate and RTT Aware 3 Color Marking) and TRBD(Target Rate Based Dropping) mechanisms. The TRA3CM and TRBD mechanisms provide three color marking and fair transmission rates among aggregate flows by considering RTT, target rate, and UDP flows simultaneously. In the results of comparing the performance among existing mechanisms and the TRA3CM-TRBD, the TRA3CM-TRBD mechanism was able to mitigate the RTT and UDP effect better than the former. The TRA3CM-TRBD is shown to provide good performance for transmission rates proportional to various target rates.

  • Soliton pulse outputs are generated with figure '8' type erbium-doped fiber laser mode-locked by using a fiber loop mirror. The fiber loop mirror consists of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier at the one end of the loop, and 504 m-long dispersion-shifted fiber as a nonlinear medium. By pumping with a $1.48{\mu}m$ wavelength laser diode and adjusting the polarization controllers inside the loop, soliton pulses are generated with 1574 nm center wavelength and 1.2 nm linewidth. The soliton pulses are found randomly spaced within the fundamental period corresponding to cavity round trip time. The autocorrelation trace shows that the pulse width is 2.4 ps, which is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. The pulsewidth- bandwidth product is found to be 0.348 which means that the pulses are nearly transform-limited.imited.

  • A satellite communication system is one of viable solutions for Internet applications running in wide areas. However, the performance of TCP can be seriously degraded in the satellite networks due to long round-trip time (RTT) and high bit error rate (BER) over satellite links. Therefore, a performance enhancing proxy(PEP) based TCP splitting connection scheme is used in the satellite link to improve the TCP performance. In this paper, we implement PEP testbed and conduct experiment to evaluate the performance of TCP splitting connection by comparing with high-speed TCP solutions in various environments. In our experimental environment, we consider multiple connections, high packet loss, and limited bandwidth. The experiment results show that PEP improves the TCP throughput than high-speed TCP variants in various environments. However, there is no improvement of the TCP throughput with the limited bandwidth because there is packet loss caused by both the congestion and the channel error.
