A New Face Detection Method using Combined Features of Color and Edge under the illumination Variance (컬러와 에지정보를 결합한 조명변화에 강인한 얼굴영역 검출방법)

  • This paper describes a new face detection method that is a pre-processing algorithm for on-line face recognition. To complement the weakness of using only edge or rotor features from previous face detection method, we propose the two types of face detection method. The one is a combined method with edge and color features and the other is a center area color sampling method. To prevent connecting the people's face area and the background area, which have same colors, we propose a new adaptive edge detection algorithm firstly. The adaptive edge detection algorithm is robust to illumination variance so that it extracts lots of edges and breakouts edges steadily in border between background and face areas. Because of strong edge detection, face area appears one or multi regions. We can merge these isolated regions using color information and get the final face area as a MBR (Minimum Bounding Rectangle) form. If the size of final face area is under or upper threshold, color sampling method in center area from input image is used to detect new face area. To evaluate the proposed method, we have experimented with 2,100 face images. A high face detection rate of 96.3% has been obtained.

Development of Hydrodynamic Capacity Evaluation Method for a Vertical-Axis Tidal Stream Turbine (수직축 조류발전 터빈의 유체공학적 용량 산정기법 개발)

  • This study deals with the investigation of the scale effect for the vertical-axis tidal stream turbine by evaluating the hydrodynamic efficiency of turbine rotors of different diameters at different flow conditions. Numerical analyses are made for the turbine rotors with a same shape, but different sizes obtained using the diameter evaluation equation suggested in this paper. It is shown that the performance of turbine is clearly dependent upon the rotor size and inflow velocity, i.e. Reynolds number dependency of different-scaled turbines showing better efficiency with increasing Reynolds number. The sudden decrease of efficiency is also noticed around the transition region of Reynolds number. The hydrodynamic capacity evaluation method needed at initial stage of turbine design is suggested and exercised with some test cases. It is recommended that the method is expected to be useful for turbines with demanding powers between 10 kW and 300 kW.

  • In conjunction with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the unmanned aerial vehicle industry is being developed to a new paradigm by combining advanced technologies such as AI, Big Data and the IoT. Aeronautical developed countries such as the U.S. are focusing their efforts on the development of the safer unmanned aerial vehicles. The Korea Aerospace Research Institute, as part of the national R&D project in 2011, had succeeded in developing the first vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) UAS, called Smart-UAV. However, although the development technology of the VTOL UAS is possessed, developing and operating of the VTOL UAS for commercial or military use are limited. The type certification procedure of the VTOL UAS developed by domestic technology is stipulated in the Korean Aviation Safety Act, but the Korean VTOL UAS airworthiness standards (KAS) hsve not been established. Thus, this study investigated the development trends of the VTOL UAS in Korea and abroad and national certification systems and procedures, and benchmarked the special conditions for the VTOL aircraft, announced by the EASA on July 2, 2019, to establish standards for type certificate of the VTOL UAS in Korea.

The Development Trend of a VTOL MAV with a Ducted Propellant (덕티드 추진체를 사용한 수직 이·착륙 초소형 무인 항공기 개발 동향)

  • This purpose of this paper was to review the development trend of the VTOL MAVs with a ducted propellant that can fly like the VTOL at intermediate and high speeds, hovering, landing, and lifting off vertically over urban areas, warships, bridges, and mountainous terrains. The MAV differs in flight characteristics from helicopters and fixed wings in many respects. In addition to enhancing thrust, the duct protects personnel from accidental contact with the spinning rotor. The purpose of the U.S. Army FCS and DARPA's OAV program is spurring development of a the VTOL ducted MAV. Today's MAVs are equipped with video/infrared cameras to hover-and-stare at enemies hidden behind forests and hills for approximately one hour surveillance and reconnaissance. Class-I is a VTOL ducted MAV developed in size and weight that individual soldiers can store in their backpacks. Class-II is the development of an organic VTOL ducted fan MAV with twice the operating time and a wider range of flight than Class-I. MAVs will need to develop to perch-and-stare technology for lengthy operation on the current hover-and-stare. The near future OAV's concept is to expand its mission capability and efficiency with a joint operation that automatically lifts-off, lands, refuels, and recharges on the vehicle's landing pad while the manned-unmanned ground vehicle is in operation. A ducted MAV needs the development of highly accurate relative position technology using low cost and small GPS for automatic lift-off and landing on the landing pad. There is also a need to develop a common command and control architecture that enables the cooperative operation of organisms between a VTOL ducted MAV and a manned-unmanned ground vehicle.

Identification of Frequency-Dependent Dynamic Characteristics of a Bump Structure for Gas-Foil Bearings via 1-DOF Shaker Tests Under Air Pressurization (가스 포일 베어링 범프 구조의 1 자유도 가진/가압 실험을 통한 주파수 의존 동특성 규명)

  • Recently, the importance of rotordynamic stability has been increased because of the tendency to employ ultra-high speeds in rotating machinery. In particular, the dynamic characteristics of gas bearings for high-speed rotating machinery need to be identified at various excitation frequencies to predict the rotor's behavior. In this study, we perform dynamic loading tests for gas-foil bearings (GFBs) to determine the bump foil structure and an air-film combined bump-foil structure for varying excitation frequencies. We calculate the dynamic characteristics from the measured force and displacement data. The air film is generated by a pressurized air supply. Based on the results, the stiffness coefficients of the bump structure and the air-film combined bump structure increased, while the damping coefficients decreased at increasing excitation frequencies. Further, the stiffness and damping coefficients of the air-film combined structure show lower values than those of the bump structure. Consequently, we identify the frequency-dependent dynamic characteristics of the bump structure and the effect of gas film on the dynamic characteristics of GFBs. Furthermore, to reveal the effectiveness of the proposed method, we perform experiments and discuss two methods of extracting the dynamic characteristics from the measured data.

Quality Characteristics of Potato and Sweet Potato Peeled by Different Methods (박피방법에 따른 감자 및 고구마의 초기 품질 비교)

  • This study was carried out to obtain fundamental data such as peeling efficiency and quality of potatoes and sweet potatoes peeled by hand, machine and alkali(NaOH). The weight loss by peeling was influenced by peeling methods. Weight losses by rotational brushing-type peeler showed the lowest value, 7.9% in potato, and 7.3% in sweet potato. Any significant differences in moisture content were not found in potatoes and sweet potatoes by peeling methods. The pH of potatoes and sweet potatoes just after peeling were 5.8-6.8 and 6.23-6.63, and decreased somewhat until 3 hrs after peeling. Hardness of potatoes and sweet potatoes peeled by hand with fruit knife were better than that of others. Depending upon the peeling method used the color and color differences undergo some changes in their color and browning. Color difference value of peeled potatoes by hand with a technical tools, and by mechanical peeler such as rotational cutting-type peeler and rotational brushing-type peeler showed just slightly. In particular, changes of rotor differences value of potatoes and sweet potatoes peeled by dipping with 10% NaOH solution at $100^{\circ}C$ was the highest in the samples peeled by NaOH.

Rotor Position Sensorless Control of Optimal Lead Angle in Bifilar-Wound Hybrid Stepping Motor (복권형 하이브리드 스테핑 전동기의 회전차 위치 센서리스 최적 Lead Angle 제어)

  • In this paper, we show that the instantaneous phase current of the bifiler-wound hybrid stepping motor is dependent of lead angle and that the information of motor position is obtained from the instantaneous phase current at ${\pi}/2$ by the theoretical formular and its computer simulation results. From the facts, we design the microcontroller-based motor position sensorless controller of optimal lead angle, which generates the excitation pulses for the closed-loop drives. The controller is consist of microcontroller which has the function of A/D converter, programmable input/output timer, and the transfer table which has the values of optimal lead angle depending on motor velocity, and ROM which has the transfer table of the values of lead angle depending on velocity of motor and the values of instantaneous phase current at ${\pi}/2$. From the design of microcontroller-based controller, we minimize the external interface circuit and obtain flexibility by changing the contents of ROM transfer tables and the control software. We confirm that the designed controller drives the bifilar-wound hybrid stepping motor is the mode of optimal lead angle by comparing the instananeous phase current experimental results and computer simulation results.

Speed Sensorless Vector Control of Wound Induction Motor Using a MRAS Method (MRAS 기법을 이용한 권선형 유도전동기의 속도센서리스 벡터제어)

  • The wound induction motor can provide high starting torque and reduced starting current simultaneously by inserting large resistor externally when starting. And this technique is one of the well known methods among the induction motor starting methods and generally used for heavy load starting such as crane and cement factories. The conventional PI controller has been widely used in industrial application due to the simple control algorithm and is generally used for control of current torque, position, and speed for the wound induction motor drive system. However, the conventional control system for wound induction motor may result in poor performance because sensors have to be used but are often limited by the environmental condition. Recently, to overcome these problems, many sensorless vector control methods for the wound induction motor have been studied. This paper presents a MRAS method for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor drive. In the conventional MRAS method, in low frequency, the stator resistance variation may result in poor performance. Therefore, this paper presents a MRAS method with stator and rotor resistance tuning for sensorless vector control of the wound induction motor to overcome several shortages of the conventional MRAS caused by parameter variation and to enhance the robustness of the sensorless vector control. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through digital simulation.

The development of a preliminary designing program for ORC radial inflow turbines and the design of the radial inflow turbine for the OTEC (ORC 반경류터빈의 예비설계프로그램 개발 및 OTEC용 반경류터빈의 설계)

  • The purpose of this study is to establish the designing method of ORC(Organic Rankine Cycle) radial inflow turbines. RTDM(Radial Turbine Design Modeler) Ver.2.1 which is a preliminary design program of radial inflow turbines was developed to achieve this purpose. The 200kW-class radial inflow turbine for OTEC(Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion) was designed by using the RTDM Ver.2.1 and CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation was performed to verify the accuracy of RTDM Ver.2.1. With the result of simulation, the accuracy of RTDM Ver.2.1 was almost 94.6% based on the designed total enthalpy drop of the radial inflow turbine. Strategy of adjusting the mass flow rate was adopted on this study to satisfy the requirements of its power and rotor outlet's conditions for the designed radial inflow turbine. The mass flow rate was consequently increased to 21.2 kg/s for the designed 200kW-class radial inflow turbine for OTEC, and then Total to total and Total to static efficiency are 89.8% and 85.36% respectively.

Development of Tacho Generator for Application of Anti-aircraft Weapon System (대공무기체계 적용을 위한 타코제너레이터 개발)

  • This paper presents the development of a tacho generator that is applicable to a DC motor for anti-aircraft weapon systems. In general, devices such as tacho generators and resolvers are used as feedback devices for controlling DC motors. A tacho generator with a wide operating temperature range was developed, which has robust characteristics against shock loads and vibrations according to the operational characteristics of anti-aircraft weapon systems. The target specifications were set based on the requirements of the tacho generator currently in operation. A rotor coupled to the shaft of the motor and a stator coupled to the housing of the motor were then designed and manufactured. The inductance was 31.0 mH, the terminal resistance was 147.7 ohms, and the rotational measurement factor was satisfactory under both normal operation and operating conditions after the maximum speed for the standard of 9.500 ± 0.475 V/krpm. In addition, the environmental suitability of the applied equipment was confirmed through the rate of change in unit temperature, and it was found that the temperature characteristics were all within 0.03 %/℃.
