Shape description is an important and fundamental issue in content-based image retrieval (CBIR), and a number of shape description methods have been reported in the literature. For shape description, both global information and local contour variations play important roles. In this paper a new included-angular ternary pattern (IATP) based shape descriptor is proposed for shape image retrieval. For each point on the shape contour, IATP is derived from its neighbor points, and IATP has good properties for shape description. IATP is intrinsically invariant to rotation, translation and scaling. To enhance the description capability, multiscale IATP histogram is presented to describe both local and global information of shape. Then multiscale IATP histogram is combined with included-angular histogram for efficient shape retrieval. In the matching stage, cosine distance is used to measure shape features' similarity. Image retrieval experiments are conducted on the standard MPEG-7 shape database and Swedish leaf database. And the shape image retrieval performance of the proposed method is compared with other shape descriptors using the standard evaluation method. The experimental results of shape retrieval indicate that the proposed method reaches higher precision at the same recall value compared with other description method.
In this paper, we propose a criteria which can be applied to classify conventional color feature based Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) methods with its application areas, and a new image retrieval method which can represent sufficient spatial information in the image and is powerful in invariant searching to translation, rotation and enlargement transform. As the conventional color feature based CBIR methods can not sufficiently include the spatial information in the image, in general, they have drawbacks, which are weak to the translation or rotation, enlargement transform. To solve it, they have represented the spatial information by partitioning the image. Retrieval efficiency, however, is decreased rapidly as increasing the number of the feature vectors. We classify conventional methods to ones using 1st order relations and ones using 2nd order relations as their color object relation, and propose a new method using 3rd order relation of color objects which is good for the translation, rotation and enlargement transform. It makes quantized 24 buckets and selects 3 high scored histogram buckets and calculates 3 mean positions of pixels in 3 buckets and 3 angles. Then, it uses them as feature vectors of a given image. Experiments show that the proposed method is especially good at enlarged images and effective for its small calculation.

Due to popularization of the wireless Internet and mobile devices the infrastructure of the ubiquitous environment, where users can get information whatever they want anytime and anywhere, is created. Therefore, a variety of fields including the education studies methods for efficiency of information transmission using on-line and off-line contents. In this paper, we propose the Mixed Mobile Education system(MME) that improves educational efficiency using on-line and off-line contents on mobile devices. Because it is hard to input new data and cannot use similar off-line contents in systems used additional tags, the proposed system does not use additional tags but recognizes of-line contents as we extract feature points in the input image using the mobile camera. We use the Scale Invariant Feature Transform(SIFT) algorithm to extract feature points which are not affected by noise, color distortion, size and rotation in the input image captured by the low resolution camera. And we use the client-server architecture for solving the limited storage size of the mobile devices and for easily registration and modification of data. Experimental results show that compared with previous work, the proposed system has some advantages and disadvantages and that the proposed system has good efficiency on various environments.

Obstacle detection is an important task for many mobile robot applications. The methods using stereo vision and optical flow are computationally expensive. Therefore, this paper presents a vision-based obstacle detection method using only two view images. The method uses a single passive camera and odometry, performs in real-time. The proposed method is an obstacle detection method using 3D reconstruction from taro views. Processing begins with feature extraction for each input image using Dr. Lowe's SIFT(Scale Invariant Feature Transform) and establish the correspondence of features across input images. Using extrinsic camera rotation and translation matrix which is provided by odometry, we could calculate the 3D position of these corresponding points by triangulation. The results of triangulation are partial 3D reconstruction for obstacles. The proposed method has been tested successfully on an indoor mobile robot and is able to detect obstacles at 75msec.
This paper proposes a novel approach to represent the image by using shape descriptor having an information of area. The proposed descriptor is a set of vectors, consists of radius, area and direction parameters in the concentrated center point. Due to the area parameter, we know our descriptor can obtain the information of area. Also, we give an extended shape descriptor to get more detailed representation. To do this, we move the center point of our vision to that point for region of interest. By doing so about all of region of interest, we can get our descriptor for detailed information of the image. From more detailed descriptor, it's natural that it's more efficient fur representation, retrievals and so on. We make it the normalized pattern and expand to improve its quality. The proposed method is invariant to scale, position and rotation. The results show that it can be used efficiently for image representation as we can see in retrievals of silhouette images.
The image retrieval generally shows the same or similar images to a query image as a result. In the case of rotated image, however, its performance tends to be debased significantly. We propose a method to ensure a reliable image retrieval of rotated images as follows; First, to obtain feature points of query/DB images by Harris Corner Detector; and then, utilizing the feature points, to find the object's axis and query/DB images into rotation invariant images with Principal Components Analysis algorithm. We have experimented with 6,000 natural images which are 256 pixels in diameter. They are 1,000 Wang's images and their rotated images by $30^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $135^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$. The simulation results show that the proposed method retrieves rotated images more effectively than the conventional method.

Research on developing algorithms for building modeling such as extracting outlines of the buildings and segmenting patches of the roofs using aerial images or LiDAR data are active. However, utilizing information from the building model is not well implemented yet. This study aims to propose a scheme for search identical or similar shape of buildings by utilizing graph topology pattern matching under the assumptions: (1) Buildings were modeled beforehand using imagery or LiDAR data, or (2) 3D building data from digital maps are available. Side walls, segmented roofs and footprints were represented as nodes, and relationships among the nodes were defined using graph topology. Topology graph database was generated and pattern matching was performed with buildings of various shapes. The results show that efficiency of the proposed method in terms of reliability of matching and database structure. In addition, flexibility in the search was achieved by altering conditions for the pattern matching. Furthermore, topology graph representation could be used as scale and rotation invariant shape descriptor.
As a result of remarkable developments in multimedia technology, the image database system that can efficiently retrieve image data becomes a core technology of information-oriented society. In this paper, we proposed the 2-phase Image Retrieval System considering both color and shape information as the method of image features extraction for content-based image data retrieval. At the first level, to get color information, with improving and extending the indexing method using color distribution characteristic suggested by Striker et al., i.e. the indexing method considering local color distribution characteristics, the system roughly classifies images through the improved method. At the second level, the system finally retrieves the most similar image from the image queried by the user using the shape information about the image groups classified at the first level. To extract the shape information, we use the Improved Moment Invariants (IMI) that manipulates only the pixels on the edges of objects in order to overcome two main problems of the existing Moment Invariant methods large amount of processing and rotation sensitiveness which can frequently be seen in the Directive Histogram Intersection technique suggested by Jain et al. Experiments have been conducted on 300 automobile images. And we could obtain the more improved results through the comparative test with other methods.
This paper explains the hardware structure of SURF(Speeded Up Robust Feature) based feature point extractor and its FPGA verification result. SURF algorithm produces novel scale- and rotation-invariant feature point and descriptor which can be used for object recognition, creation of panorama image, 3D Image restoration. But the feature point extraction processing takes approximately 7,200msec for VGA-resolution in embedded environment using ARM11(667Mhz) processor and 128Mbytes DDR memory, hence its real-time operation is not guaranteed. We analyzed integral image memory access pattern which is a key component of SURF algorithm to reduce memory access and memory usage to operate in c real-time. We assure feature extraction that using a Vertex-5 FPGA gives 60frame/sec of VGA image at 100Mhz.

This paper deals with the recognition of closed planar shape using a three dimensional spectral feature vector
which is derived from the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) spectrum of contour sequence and fuzzy ARTMAP neural
network classifier. Contour sequences obtained from 2-D planar images represent the Euclidean distance between
the centroid and all boundary pixels of the shape, and are related to the overall shape of the images. The Fourier
transform of contour sequence and spectrum analyzer are used as a means of feature selection and data reduction.
The three dimensional spectral feature vectors are extracted by spectrum analyzer from the FFT spectrum. These
spectral feature vectors are invariant to shape translation, rotation and scale transformation. The fuzzy ARTMAP
neural network which is combined with two fuzzy ART modules is trained and tested with these feature vectors.
The experiments including 4 aircrafts and 4 industrial parts recognition process are presented to illustrate the high
performance of this proposed method in the recognition problems of noisy shapes.
