Research on pesticide residues as endocrine disruptors in natural medicines was initiated by Korea Food & Drug Administration this year. We determined the presence and levels of certain pesticides in selected natural medicines. The natural medicines collected this year are Glycyrrhiza Root, Cinnamon Bark, Pueraria Root, Polygonatum Rhizome, Jujube, Schizandra Fruit, Lycium Fruit, Liriope Tuber, Eucommia Bark, Peony Root, Korean Angelica, Dioscorea Rhizome, Cnidium Rhizome, Cassia Seed, Platycodon Root, Comus Fruit, Mentha Herb, Epimedium Herb, Bupleurum Root, and Ginger, which have no data for pesticide residues and 192 samples of them were circulated in Korea, 28 samples were circulated in China. In order to analyze many pesticides in large number of samples we used simultaneous multi-residue analysis of pesticides by GC-ECD, which was followed by GC-MSD analysis to confirm the identity of the detected pesticide in each sample.
Four year old American ginseng plants (Panax quinquefolium L.) were grown in control and treated field plots in North Carolina, USA. Soil pH (4.4, 5.5, and 6.5), soil phosphate (19, 89 and 232 ppm) and mulch treatments (wheat straw, pine needle straw, poplar bark, oak bark, pine bark and hardwood leaves) were studied for their effects on total dry weight, total ginsenosides and 5 individual ginsenosides (A1, Rg1, Rd, Re, and Rb2). The leaf and root tissue were analyzed for ginsenosides by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). The oak and poplar bark mulch treatments appeared to have the best effect upon the growth and production of roots while not significantly decreasing the ginsenoside content of the roots. The oak mulch showed a statistical increase in the ginsenoside content of the leaves.
Some pharmacological activities of acanthoic acid, isolated from Acanthopanax koreanum root was investigated in animals. It is revealed that the compound had analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities without actions on central nervous system and showed inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The anti-inflammatory activity might be related to inhibition of prostaglandin E$_2$ synthesis in exudates of inflammation.

This study was conducted as follows in order to find out the possibility of using (Chamaecyparis obtusa) by part as a cosmetic material. Chamaecyparis obtusa was separated leaves, bark, wood, and root, and extracted with 99.9% ethanol, and the antioxidant and whitening effects of the sample were confirmed. For this, the following studies were conducted. Antioxidant evaluation was confirmed by 1 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, 2 2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium salt (ABTS+) radical scavenging activity. To evaluate the whitening effect, mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activity evaluation and cytotoxicity evaluation of Chamaecyparis obtusa extract through MTT assay were conducted, and cellular tyrosinase inhibition rate was measured and melanin contents was confirmed. As a result of antioxidant activity, Bark extract among Chamaecyparis obtusa parts showed the best efficacy, and bark in B16F10 melanoma cell showed tyrosinase activity inhibition and melanin contents inhibitory effects. Therefore, it was confirmed that the ethanol extract of Chamaecyparis obtusa was developed as a natural material for safe and excellent whitening functional cosmetics.
This study was carried out to indentify the mycorrhizal development and growth stimulation of Pinus thunbergii seedlings grown on soil growth media which mixed with various amounts of pine bark. The results were follow ; 1. Seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius were significantly increased in number of short roots and mycorrhizal short roots, height, maximum growth rate, and leaf area than those of no-inoculation. 2. Mycorrhizal formation according to bark contents was highest by 25% bark treatment, and decreased in 50 and 75% bark contents. 3. Within the same treatment of bark content, seedlings inoculated with Pisolithus tinctorius showed more increased height and leaf, stem, and root dry weight than those of no-inoculated.
Experiments were conducted to investigate the optimum season for mulberry graftages harvesting before the period of natural leaf fall in autumn. Harvesting season was examined at 10 days intervals from September 30 to November 20, 1985 and 1986, at nine sites in eight provinces. The results were : 1. Diameter of graftages increased until October 30. 2. Early harvest of graftages decreased survived rate, number of shoots, and total shoot length the next spring. The October 30 harvest yielded the best growth the following spring. 3. Harvests after October 20 allowed for good survial of mulberry shoots and sprouting the following spring. 4. Total N and P in plants increased with late harvests, K decreased, and Ca content was not affected by harvest date. 5. Total N, P, and Ca were higher in stem cortex than root bark, while K appeared to be equally distributed between root and shoot bark.
Ulmus parvifolia has been used as a traditional folk medicine to treat the carbuncle in deep skin. In this study, the effect of water extract of root bark of Ulmus parvifolia (WUP) on the carbuncle, pain, inflammation and hypersensitivity was evaluated in animal models. The administration of WUP significantly decreased the size of Staphylococcus aureus ($10^8$ cells/mouse)-induced carbuncle, and also exhibited analgesic activity in the HAc-induced writhing syndrome at doses of 50-500 mg/kg. It also showed significant anti-inflammatory activity in the carageenin- and complete Freund's adjuvant-induced inflammation. In the histamine-induced anaphylaxis, it decreased the percent of mortality by protecting mice treated with Bordetella pertussis. In the immune responses in the mice sensitized and challenged with sheep red blood cells, the Arthus reaction determined by swelling of foot pad at 4 h after challenge, HA titer, HY titer and PFC which can be used to evaluate the humoral immune response were significantly suppressed by oral administration of WUP at doses of 100 and 200mg/kg. The cellular immune responses in the same mice such as delayed type hypersensitivity determined by swelling of foot pad at 24 h after challenge and RFC were also significantly suppressed in the same manner.
Morinda citrifolia, commercially known as Noni, is a tree that grows widely throughout the Pacific, and is recognized as one of the most significant sources of traditional medicines among Pacific Island societies. All parts of the plant have traditional and/or modern uses, including roots and bark(dyes, medicine), trunks(firewood, tools), and leaves and fruits(food, medicine). The bark and the roots of the tree contain red and yellow pigments respectively, which are both used in the manufacture of dyes. Dyes from Noni are being used traditionally, to color clothing and fabrics. In this study, mordanting effects on the dyeing properties of Noni root extract on silk fabrics were investigated.
Two new benzylated flavonoids, 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6-p-hydroxybenzylflavanone (1) and 5,7,4'-trihydroxy-6,8-di-p-hydroxybenzylflavanone (2) together with six known flavonoids, kaempferol (3), artocarpesin (4), cycloartocarpesin (5), cudraflavone D (6), gericudranin E (7), and leachianone G (8) have been isolated from the root bark of Cudrania tricuspidata. The structures of 1 and 2 were characterized based on spectroscopic data including 1D- and 2D-NMR. All the isolates were evaluated for their inhibitory effects of monoamine oxidase (MAO). Among them, kaempferol (3), artocarpesin (4), and cudraflavone D (6) showed moderate inhibitory effects with $IC_{50}$ values of 82.3, 30.8, and $71.8\;{\mu}M$, respectively.
