  • Block copoly(L-lactide-${\gamma}$-benzyl-L-glutamate)was synthesized from L-lactide by cationic ring opening polymerization and ${\gamma}$-benzyl-L-glutamate N-carboxy anhydride by introducing amino group terminated poly(L-lactide). L-lactide was polymerized in the presence of stannous octate at $110^{\circ}C$ and ${\gamma}$-benzyl- L-glutamate was polymerized in the presence of NaH at room temperature. The synthesized monomers and copolymers were identified by IR and NMR. The Itermal properties of the copolymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetry. The thermal stability and melting temperature(Tm) of the block copolymers were measured and discussed. The activation energies of thermal decomposition for the block copoly(L-lactide-${\gamma}$ benzyl-L-glutamate) were evaluated from the thermogravimetric data by Freeman and Carroll method.

  • Polyaniline-yttrium trioxide (PAni-$Y_2O_3$) composites were synthesized by the in-situ polymerization of aniline in the presence of $Y_2O_3$ The composite formation and structural changes in these composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra red spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The direct current (DC) electrical conductivity of the order of $0.51{\times}10^{-2}\;S\;cm^{-1}-0.283\;S\;cm^{-1}$ in the temperature range 300 K-473 K indicates semiconducting behavior of the composites. Room temperature AC conductivity and dielectric response of the composites were studied in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 1 MHz. The variation of AC conductivity with frequency obeyed the power law, which decreased with increasing weight percentage (wt %) of $Y_2O_3$. Studies on dielectric properties shows the relaxation contribution coupled by electrode polarization effect. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss in these composites depend on the content of $Y_2O_3$ with a percolation threshold at 20 wt % of $Y_2O_3$ in PAni. Electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (EMI SE) of the composites in the frequency range 100 Hz to 2 GHz was in the practically useful range of -12.2 dB to -17.2 dB. The observed electrical and shielding properties were attributed to the interaction of $Y_2O_3$ particles with the PAni molecular chains.

  • Copolymer consisted of MMA and tBMA was synthesized by radical polymerization and poly(MMA-co-MA) was prepared by selective hydrolysis of tert-butyl group. The obtained polymer was coupled with epoxy functionalized PEO of various molecular weight to synthesize poly(MMA-co-PEGMA) with different side chain length. The AC-impedance measurement shows $1.88{\times}10^{-6}Scm^{-1}$ of room temperature ionic conductivity from 48mol% of MMA while $5.11{\times}10^{-8}Scm^{-1}$ was observed in 82mol% sample. In addition, there was an effect of PEGMA molecular weight on ionic conductivity possibly due to the steric hindrance in grafting-onto coupling reaction. Finally, the polymer electrolytes shows electrochemical stability up to 6V at room temperature.

  • (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was used as a silylation agent, and modified silica nanoparticles were prepared by solution polymerization. 2.0 g of silica nanoparticles, 150 ml of toluene, and 20 ml of MPTMS were put into a 300 ml flask, and these mixtures were dispersed with ultrasonic vibration for 60 min. 0.2 g of hydroquinone as an inhibitor and 1 to 2 drops of 2,6-dimethylpyridine as a catalyst were added into the mixture. The mixture was then stirred with a magnetic stirrer for 8 hrs. at room temperature. After the reaction, the mixture was centrifuged for 1 hr. at 6000rpm. After precipitation, 150 ml of ethanol was added, and ultrasonic vibration was applied for 30 min. After the ultrasonic vibration, centrifugation was carried out again for 1 hr. at 6000rpm. Organo-modification of silica nanoparticles with a ${\gamma}$-methacryloxypropyl functional group was successfully achieved by solution polymerization in the ethanol solution. The characteristics of the ${\gamma}$-mercaptopropyl modified silica nanoparticles (MPSN) were examined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS, THERMO VG SCIENTIFIC, MultiLab 2000), a laser scattering system (LSS, TOPCON Co., GLS-1000), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR, JASCO INTERNATIONL CO., FT/IR-4200), scanning electron microscopy (SEM, HITACHI, S-2400), an elemental analysis (EA, Elementar, Vario macro/micro) and a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA, Perkin Elmer, TGA 7, Pyris 1). From the analysis results, the content of the methacryloxypropyl group was 0.98 mmol/g and the conversion rate of acrylamide monomer was 93%. SEM analysis results showed that the organo-modification of ultra-fine particles effectively prevented their agglomeration and improved their dispensability.

  • A green biosynthesis method is described for the preparation of Polyaniline (PANI)-cerium dioxide ($CeO_2$) nanocomposites in different media via in-situ oxidative polymerization procedure. The effect of various media including use of HCl, Lemon Juice, Beverage, White Vinegar, Verjuice and Apple vinegar extracts on the particles size, morphology as well as the conductivity of $PANI-CeO_2$ nanocomposites was investigated. The electron-withdrawing feature of $CeO_2$ increases doping level of PANI and enhances electron delocalization. These cause a significantly blue shift of C = C stretching band of quinoid from $1570cm^{-1}$ to $1585cm^{-1}$. The optical properties of the pure material and polymeric nanocomposites as well as their interfacial interaction in nanocomposite structures analyzed by UV-visible spectroscopy. The DC electrical conductivity (${\sigma}$) of as-prepared HCl doped PANI and a $PANI-CeO_2$ nanocomposite measured by a four-probe method at room temperature was studied.

  • Regarding physical absorption mechanism for fine particles(Dust), internal pore-bridging is a major parameter in porous media. In this paper, internal bridging pore system is invented through FA-based geopolymer and incorporated PLA (Polylactic Acid) fiber with biodegradability. With various mix proportions, compressive strength over 20MPa is obtained but PLA is little dissolved in the condition of NaOH 5mole and $30^{\circ}C$ of temperature, which was found that temperature rising accelerates PLA solubility. Within 24hours, beads type PLA is completely dissolved under $90{\sim}130^{\circ}C$ and NaOH 5~12mole of alkali. In room condition, geo-polymerization is limitedly occurs so that the internal pore after PLA dissolution is thought to be effective to absorption and storage of fine particles.

  • Diblock copolymers consisting of methoxy Poly (ethylene glycol) (MPEG) and poly (${\epsilon}-ca$ prolactone) (PCL), poly(${\delta}-valerolactone$) (PVL), poly(L-lactide) (PLLA), or poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) were prepared to compare the characterization of diblock copolymers as a drug carrier. MPEG-PCL, MPEG-PVL, MPEG-PLLA, and MPEG-PLGA diblock copolymers were synthesized by the ring-opening polymerization of ${\epsilon}$-caprolactone or ${\delta}$-valerolactone in the presence of $HCl{\cdot}Et_2O$ as a monomer activator at room temperature and by the ring-opening polymerization of L-lactide or a mixture of L-lactide and glycolide in the presence of stannous octoate at $130^{\circ}C$, respectively. The synthesized diblock copolymers were characterized with $^1H-NMR$, GPC, DSC, and XRD. The micellar characterization of MPEG-polyester diblock copolymers in an aqueous phase was carried out by using NMR, dynamic light scattering, AFM, and fluorescence techniques. Most micelles exhibited a spherical shape in AFM. Thus, ore confirmed that the micelles formed with MPEG-polyester diblock copolymers have possibility as a potential hydrophobic drug delivery vehicle because a hydrophobic drug could be preferentially distributed in the micelle core.

  • In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were oxidized with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. After oxidation, oxidized MWCNTs were treated with thionyl chloride ($SOCl_2$) and 1,4-butanediol (BD) in sequence at room temperature to introduce hydroxyl groups on the surface of MWCNTs. The prepared MWCNT-OH was silanized with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxylsilane (MPTMS) to make MWCNT-MPTMS. The MWCNT-MPTMS was used as fillers in emulsion polymerization to make MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA composite particles with 3 kinds of emulsifiers, hexadecyltrimethylammoniumbromide (CTAB) as a cationic, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS) as an anionic and polyethylene glycol tert-octylphenyl ether (Triton X-114) as a nonionic emulsifier. Morphologies of composite emulsions were confirmed by a particle size analyzer (PSA) and a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Morphologies of emulsion polymerized MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA with SDBS showed more uniform particle size distribution compared to those of other two emulsifiers used emulsions. MWCNT-MPTMS/PMMA showed $3.4^{\circ}C$ higher $T_g$ compared to pristine MWCNT/PMMA due to covalent bond formation at interface of MWCNT-MPTMS and PMMA.

  • The grafting studies were concentrated on working out the methodology for radiation of flame retardants to polyester/cotton (65/35) blend fabric. The Fyrol 76 was used as a flame retardant in develping methodology for localizing flame retardants on the surface of the blend fabric. By judicious control of the swelling conditions, time_of contact with the monomer, and dose rate, locating the graft in the fiber became possible. The yield of the graft polymerization was depended upon the total dose and the preswelling conditions. Oxygen Index was used to evaluate the effect of the location of Fyrol 76 and other flame retardants within the surface upon the flame retardance efficiencies. To get a better flame retardance efficiency by :the localized grafting of Fyrol 76 to polyester/cotton blend fabric, a technique of one step processing at room temperature was developed substituting the ordinary two-step processing at high temperature.

  • In this work, we demonstrate a facile process to prepare an electrolyte membrane for the supercapacitor based on a graft copolymer consisting of starch and poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN). The graft copolymer (starch-g-PAN) was synthesized via free radical polymerization initiated by ceric ions. The starch-g-PAN was dissolved in ionic liquid, i.e. 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMIM DCA) without any organic solvents at room temperature. The gelation of polymer electrolyte membranes occurred by applying high temperature, i.e. $100^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The resultant electrolyte membrane was flexible and thus applied to flexible solid supercapacitors. The performance of the supercapacitor based on starch-g-PAN graft copolymer electrolyte reached 21 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g. The cell also showed high cyclic stability with 86% of retention rate within 10,000 cycles. The preparation of starch-g-PAN based polymer electrolyte membrane provides opportunities for facile fabrication of flexible solid supercapacitors with good performance.
