In the direct rolling processes for the mushy state alloy, a mushy state material which simultaneously contains liquid-solid phase is obtained from the exit port of stirring apparatus with a given solid fraction. This solid fraction is dependent on the temperature of within the solid-liquid range which shows to be controlled accurately by the experimental conditions for a given stirring apparatus. Rolling conditions for fabrication the fine surface strip were obtained from direct rolling experiment with mushy state alloys of Sn-75%Pb and aluminum alloy. Influence of solid fraction, rolling speed and initial roller gap on the state of strip surface and solidified structure was observed. We proposed theoretical model for prediction of rolling force, and we compared calculation result and experimental value measured with load cell.

The automation of hot rolling process requires the developments of several mathematical models for simulation and quantitative description of the industrial operations involved in order to achieve the continuously increasing productivity, flexibility and quality(dimensional accuracy, mechanical properties and surface properties). The mathematical modeling of hot rolling process has long been recognized to be a desirable approach to investigate rolling operating practice and design of mill requirement. To achieve this objectives, a new teaming method with neural network to improve the accuracy of rolling force prediction in hot rolling mill is developed. Also, Genetic Algorithm(GA) is applied to select the optimal structure of the neural network and compared with that of engineers experience. It is shown from this research that both structure selection methods can lead to similar results.
Although the finite element method is a good tool to analyze skin-pass rolling, it is hard to be applied in the field because of its long calculation time. In the current study, simple numerical models were developed for the prediction of roll force and residual stress profiles along the strip width. These models are based on finite element analysis and a coupled solution of Sims’ equation and Hitchcock’s formula. The results indicate that plastic strains can be represented as in simple equations of the deformed roll profile and the initial thickness of the strip.
Under nuclear reactor severe accidents, the resuspension of radioactive aerosol may occur in the containment due to the disturbing airflow generated by hydrogen combustion, hydrogen explosion and containment depressurization resulting in the increase of radioactive source term in the containment. In this paper, for containment conditions, by considering the contact between particle and rough deposition surface, the distribution of the distance between two contact points of particle and deposition surface, rolling and lifting separation mechanism, resuspension model based on random contact with rough surface (RRCR) is established. Subsequently, the detailed torque and force analysis is carried out, which indicates that particles are more easily resuspended by rolling under low disturbing airflow velocity. The simulation result is compared with the experimental result and the prediction of different simulation methods, the RRCR model shows equivalent and better predictive ability, which can be applicable for simulation of aerosol resuspension in containment during severe accident.

We predict the rolled-strip profile for a 6-high mill using thin rolling theory and a numerical model. In the numerical model, we calculate the distributions of the contact pressures between the rolls and the rolling pressure between the strip and the work roll in the transverse direction using the geometric structure of the 6-high mill and the boundary conditions. We determine the distribution of the rolling pressure in the rolling direction via a thin-foil rolling model using Fleck's theory. We calculate the three-dimensional elastic deformation of the work roll using the pressures of the width and rolling directions. We then obtain the three-dimensional strip profile via the elastic deformation of the work roll during the rolling process. The profile is verified by a thin cold-rolling test and FE simulation.

The prevention of roll breakage in hot rolling process is improtant to reduce maintenance cost and production loss. Rolling conditions such as the roll force and torque have been intensively studied to overcome the roll breakage. in the present work, a model for life prediction of work rolls under working condition was developed and discussed. The model consists of stress analysis, crack propagation, wear and fatigue calculation model. Roll life can be predicted by stress, crack depth and fatigue damage calculated from this model. The reliability of stress analysis is backed up by the FEM analysis. From the result of simulation using by pressent model, although the fatigue damage of back up roll reachs 80% of practical limit, that of workroll was less than 40%. In edge section of workroll stress amplification is found by wear and bender effect. We can judge that workroll failures are not due to fatigue damage, crack propagation by bending stress but stress amplification by wear and bender in present working condition.

During sailing by wind-driven thrust on the sail, a catamaran sailing yacht generates leeway and heeling. For estimating resistance and moment prediction of a real ship by changing of running attitude, a model test of the ship has to be carried out. This study aims at establishing experimental techniques for a catamaran sailing yacht by changed attitude during running direction. Through the model test, drag and side force of the real ship are predicted. Also through experiment, rolling and yawing moments were considered.

During a straight driving and cornering maneuver by a vehicle various forces and moments are exerted on the tire's footprint. A cornering properties, handling and stability performances of vehicle can be predicted by these forces and moments values. Therefore, on this study, a lateral force and a aligning torque are predicted by these forces and moments values. Therefore, on this study, a lateral force and a aligning torque are predicted using a finite element method. Contact area of the tire between bead and wheel are fixed to simplify of a finite element model. Lateral force is exerted on the rigid surface as a real load with Coulum friction after inflate and load vertically. Then, rotate the tire's axle to simulate a free rolling untill taken the equilibrium of a aligning torque. Also, experimental observations are made to test a reliability of a FE analysis conducted in this study. The finite element analysis said that good agreement was obtained with experimental results of these cornering properties, giving confidence within about one percent. So it os recommended that a finite element analysis can be used as a good tool to predicted the tire cornering properties.
Cold rolling mill process in steel works uses stands of rolls to flatten a strip to a desired thichness. At Pohang Iron and Steel Company (POSCO) in Pohang, Korea, precalculation determines the mill settings before a strip actually enters the mill and is done by an outdated mathematical model. A corrective neural network model is proposed to improve the accuracy of the roll force prediction. Additional variables to be fed to the network include the chemical composition of the coil, its coiling temperature and the aggregated amount of processed strips of each roll. The network was trained using a standard backpropagation with 2,277 process data collected form POSCO from March 1995, then was tested on the unseen 200 data from the same period. The combined model reduced the prediction error by 55.4% on average.
This study intended to develop the prediction models of the traction and field performance of two-wheel tractors by using the principles which were applied for predicting those of the four-wheel tractors. The traction model developed in this study consists of the net traction coefficient, rolling resistance coefficient and traction efficiency, Which are expressed as functions of both wheel numeric and slip. A computer program on the field performance of two-wheel tractors is also developed to predict the drawbar horsepower, traction force, traction efficiency, rotational speed of engine and engine horsepower if the characteristics of the engine performance and operational condition of the two-wheel tractor are known. Based on the developed models, the conditions of basic variables to maximize the field performance were analyzed so as to assess the existing two-wheel tractor.
