Thermal Analysis on Twin-Roll Type Strip Continuous Casting Process Considering Contact Thermal Resistance between Molten Metal and Cooling Roll (쌍롤식 박판 연속주조공정에 있어서 용탕과 냉각롤의 접촉 열저항을 고려한 전열해석)

  • The twin-roll type strip continuous casting process(or direct rolling process) of steel materials is characterized by two rotating water cooled rolls receiving a steady supply of molten metal which solidifies onto the rolls. A solidification analysis of molten metal considering phase transformation and thermofluid is performed using finite diffefence method with curvilinear coordinate to reduce computing time and molten region analysis with arbitrary shape. An enthalpy-specific heat method is used to determine the temperatures inthe roll and the steel. The temperature distribution of cooling roll is calculated using two dimensional finite element method, because of complex roll shape due to cooling hole in rolls and improvemnt accuracy of calculation result. The energy equaiton of cooling roll is solved simultanuously with the conservation equaiton of molten metal in order to consider heat transfer through the cooling roll. The calculated roll temperature is compared to experimental results and the heat transfer coefficient between cooling roll surface and rolling material(steel) is also determined from comparison of measured roll temperature and calculated temperature.

  • Production of rolled steel has been growing partly supported by the advancement of rolls and rolling mills. Aiming at the further improvement in roll performance, various new techniques such as centrifugal casting, double poured casting cast steel, special build-up making, etc. have been introduced in the field of roll manufacture in these several years. The present paper describes the development of horizontal cast rolls(sleeve and indefinite chilled roll) made by Hyundai Steel and the results of mill tests. The developed roils are contributing the improvement of final products.

  • The transport phenomena in a wedge-shaped pool of twin-roll continuous caster are affected by the various operating parameters such as the melt-feed pattern, roll-gap thickness, melt-superheat, and casting speed. A computer program has been developed for analyzing the two-dimensional, steady conservation equations for transport phenomena during twin-roll continuous casting process in order to estimate the turbulent melt-flow, temperature fields, and solidification in the wedge-shaped pool. The turbulent characteristics of the melt-flow were considered using a low-Reynolds-number K-$\xi$ turbulence model. Based on the computer program, the effects of the different melt-feed patterns, roll-gap thicknesses, and superheats of melt on the variations of the velocity and temperature distributions, and the mushy solidification were examined. The results show that the liquidus line is located considerably at the upstream region, and in the lower region appear the well-mixed melt-flow and most widely developed mushy zone. Besides, the variation of melt-flow due to varying melt-feed patterns, affects mainly the liquidus line, and scarcely has effects on the solidus line in the outlet region.

  • The proper parameters in a twin roll strip casting are important to obtain the stabilization of the Mg sheet. What is examined in this paper is the quantitative relationships of the important control parameters such as the roll speed, height of pool region, outlet size of nozzle, solidification profile and the final point of solidification in a twin roll strip casting Unsteady conservation equations were used for transport phenomena in the pool region of a twin roll strip casting in order to predict a velocity, temperature distributions of fields and a solidification process of molten magnesium. The energy equation of cooling roll Is solved simultaneously with the conservation equations of molten magnesium In order to consider the heat transfer through the cooling roil. The finite difference method (2-D) and the finite element method (2-D) are used in the analysis of pool region and cooling roil to reduce computing time and to improve the accuracy of calculation respectively.

  • In this paper, analysis of temperature and stress distributions in the roll for a twin roll continuous casting process was carried out. Firstly, several state equations were set up to determine the temperature distribution in the roll using finite difference method. Secondly, thermal stress in the roll was calculated numerically. Also, stress distribution due to the roll pressure was calculated to determine the effect of the roll pressure. For analysis of temperature distributions and the stress states of the roll, there are three kinds of roll materials, 2ICrMoV5. 11, CuCo/NiBe, CuCrZr and three types of cooling system were used.

  • In the sand casting process, the flow of liquid metal affects the quality of casting products and their die life. To determine the optimal bush part design process, this study performed various analyses using commercial finite element analysis S/W. The simulation focused on the molten metal behaviors during the mold filling and solidification stages of sand casting. This study aims to develop methods to reduce the cost and increase the tool life of the continuous hot zinc plating roll.

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis on the solidification characteristics in twin-roll strip casting. Unstructured fixed-grid system was employed to deal with phase change. Melting of pure gallium was analyzed to confirm the validity of present program in both structured and unstructured grid systems. An algorithm for simultaneous calculation of the temperature in the roll and the molten metal pool was developed. The flow field in the pool and heat transfer features between pool and roll were shown. The effect of process parameters was also studied. Since the geometry of the molten metal Pool significantly deforms along the casting direction, unstructured grid system is more efficient. The unstructured grid system gives almost the same accuracy, even though the number of grids is only 60% of the structure done.

  • In this paper the modeling and control of a twin roll strip caster is investigated. Mathematical models for the strip casting process are obtained by analyzing five critical areas such that the molten steel level in the pool, solidification process, roll separating force and torque, roll dynamics including hydraulic actuators, and roll drive system. A two-level control strategy is proposed. At lower level, three local subsystems are independently feedback-controlled by suitable local controllers which perform well to the behaviors of each subsystem. They are a variable structure control of the molten steel level in the pool, an adaptive predictive control of the roll gap which is directly related to the strip thickness, and an $H^{\infty}$ control of the roll drive system. At higher level, all reference signals to the lower level subsystems are generated by an optimal controller in the perspective of regulating the strip thickness and roll separating force.   • Metal casting is a process in which molten metal or liquid metal is poured into a mold made of sand, metal, or ceramic. The mold contains a cavity of the desired shape to form geometrically complex parts. The casting process is used to create complex shapes that are difficult to make using conventional manufacturing practices. For the optimal casting process design of sleeve parts, various analyses were performed in this study using commercial finite element analysis software. The simulation was focused on the behaviors of molten metal during the mold filling and solidification stages for the precision and sand casting products. This study developed high-life sleeve parts for the sink roll of continuous hot-dip galvanizing equipment by applying a wear-resistant alloy casting process.

  • 냉간압연기술의 발달로 냉간압연기도 매우 다양하게 발달되었으며 냉간압연의 원자재인 열간압연재의 종류도 다양하다. 최근 열간압연가공시 회수율이 높은 연속주조재(Continuous casting strip)인 CC 재가 종전의 가공과정이 복잡하며 불량율이 높은 Ingot주조재(Ingot casting strip)인 IC 재 보다 생산비율이 점차 증대되어 냉간압연재료의 주종을 차지하고있다. CC재는 냉간압연가공시 IC재에 비해 Work roll 조도저하가 현저하게 크기 때문에 슬립(Slip)과 채팅(Charttering) 현상 등이 발생하여 압연가공성이 불안정 하게 되어 Work roll과 판표면에 손상이 생기게 되고, 압연가공시 Roll 사고 등의 문제가 발생하므로 Roll 마멸의 정도를 파악하여 Roll을 효과적으로 관리하므로써 Work roll과 판표면의 슬립현상 및 채터 링현상 등을 방지할 수 있다.
