  • This study investigates human-robot interactions in a museum environment. Unlike robots in movies, robots in real life do not have 'personality,' but instead have a specific purpose and function. This research is primarily about the assignment of specific and appropriate personalities to robots in different contexts. Methods by which a definite personality can be imparted on a robot are discussed in this research. Previous research has addressed attempts to assign a robot personality based on the task context. However, the discussion of robot personality is incomplete. Therefore, we assumed that a robot's character was dependent on the characteristics of its location of use. We planned a $2{\times}2$ comparison of various robot personalities, i.e., introverted or extroverted paired with either a traditional museum or a process-oriented experiential experience. Based on Schmitt's (1999) strategic experiential modules, experiential factors were derived for each set of conditions. To achieve the objectives of the research, theoretical and empirical research were conducted simultaneously. The software JMP 9 was used to verify the research model and hypotheses.

  • This study is to analyze the effects on using robots in elementary regular classes. The robots and PC-linked applications were developed considering the school subjects' academic goals and the learners' responses were carefully examined while applying the robots in the class. The image profile after the robot application shows positive feedbacks in most of the contents and some significant differences were found in contents such as 'theoretical-practical', 'uncooperative-cooperative'(p<.05). Moreover, the analysis on the learners' image drawings shows that more robot images are formed related to the concrete learning environment. The learners have answered in an interview to evaluate their understanding of Robot based instruction that both direct and indirect robot experience induce positive participations and provide authentic learning experience. During the robot based instruction, the learners cooperate with their group members and recognize the cooperation as a positive activity. It proves that the robot based instruction can lead to a possibility of new education paradigm.

  • This study focused on the role of service robots as employees, and examined how robot services affect customer behavior compared to human employees in service success and failure situations. The three experiments were performed on barista robot, serving robot, and chef robot. The results of this study are as follows. First, in the case of service success, customers showed similar intentions for revisit regardless of employee type. On the other hand, in the case of service failure, the revisit intention was found to be more negative than that of the human employee when the service was received from the robot employee. The reason for this was found to be that customers had lower expectations for the capabilities of service robots compared to humans. Finally, customers perceive that robot services are more stable than human services.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the research trend of robot education for young children and elementary students as a basic study for the development of hands-on robot program for young children. Trends by year, research contents, and effectiveness of 155 dissertations and journal papers from 2006 to May 2016 related to robot education for young children and elementary students were analyzed. The results were as follows. In the research subject, research was conducted in the order of integrated education, attitudes and awareness research, and response research for young children and programming education, design development research, and integrated education for elementary students. In the research method, observational research and development research were the most common in young children and elementary students, respectively. In the effectiveness validation, research on social and emotional interaction and research on creativity were the most common in young children and elementary students, respectively. Based on the results of this study, the analysis provided basic data for the development of programs for young children's hands-on robot activities and suggested the direction and implications of robot education in connection with SW education of young children and elementary students.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a school violence prevention program "Modujikimi" for young children to be embedded in IrobiQ, the teacher assistive robot. The themes of this program consisted of basic character education, bullying prevention education and sexual violence prevention education. The activity types included large group, individual and small group activities, free choice activities, and finally parents' education, which included poems, fairy tales, music, art, sharing stories. Finally, the multi modal functions of the robot were employed: image on the screen, TTS (Text To Speech), touch function, recognition of sound and recording system. The robot content was demonstrated to thirty early childhood educators whose acceptability of the content was measured using questionnaires. And also the content was applied to children in daycare center. As a result, majority of them responded positively in acceptability. The results of this study suggest that the further research is needed to improve two-way interactivity of teacher assistive robot.

  • Recently, STEM education and improvement in creativity took a lot of attention in local and foreign educational programs, and the robot education is regarded as one of the answers which can achieve the objectives. The robot education is quite active locally in various ways including robot classes for after school program in elementary schools, a number of robot competitions, and education for the gifted. Under these circumstances, the qualification test for robot technology is developed to provide a standard for evaluating professional knowledge on robotics and is currently under consideration to be one of the government-approved qualification tests. However, compared to the robot classes for after school program, this test is not well recognized by most teachers in elementary and middle schools. This paper addresses and analyzes the current status of the test, in particular, backgrounds, qualification standards, organizing committee, intention of presenting questions, examples of problems used in the test, and demands raised by applicants, etc. Base on the analysis, some suggestions are made to establish a solid standard for evaluating robot technologies. It is suggested that the level of difficulty and contents covered should be properly adjusted considering the level of applicants. In addition, it is essential to provide well organized supplementary material for students and wide range of contents on robot technology. Finally, some efforts including cooperating with the robot classes for after school program should be made to invigorate the test.

  • This study uses the identification which is one of the critical components of psychological mechanism and enables replacing one's own self because of the needs of self-expression(disclosure) and creation. The study aims to improve educational effects using the realistic by increasing sense of the virtual reality and the attention. After the computer-based contents were developed and converted to be applied into robot, and then the contents were combined the student's photo and the avatar using automatic loading. Finally each one of the contents was applied to the students. The results of the investigation indicated that there were significant effects of the contents based on identification. In other words, the contents effect on student's attention, but not their academic achievement. The study could find the effect of the identification's application using the educational robot. We suggested that improving technical ability of the augmented virtuality as a face-detection and sensitive interaction may lead to the specific suggestions for educational effects for further research.

  • Contents 1We developed a new type of lower part of the human-sized BWR (biped walking robot) driven by a new actuator based on the ball screw which has high strength and high gear ratio. Each leg of the robot is composed of three pitch Joints and one roll joint. In all, a 8 degree-of-freedom robot was developed. A new type of actuator for the robot is proposed, which is composed of four bar link mechanism driven by the ball screw. The BWR was designed to walk autonomously by adapting small DC motors for the robot actuators and has an embeded controller system including host computer, batteries and motor drivers. In the performance test, we had basic stable walking data so far, but we f...

  • AI-powered robot news is drawing attention as artificial intelligence technology is fully spread in the news distribution field. Robot news still has many technical and ethical problems, but academic research on this is insufficient. This study analyzes the issue of robot writing in artificial intelligent based robot journalism industry using SWOT analysis. As a result, the advantages of big data processes, accurate information gathering, high efficiency and disadvantages such as lack of independent arguments and lack of evidence and opportunities for technical development, government support, academic development, and industrial applications, and threats such as uncritical acceptance and lack of talent have been found. This study suggests three future-oriented directions, such as human-machine collaboration, intelligent news, and chat-bot, through previous studies on the development direction of robot journalism-based article writing.
