In this study, performance of reinforced railroad roadbeds with the reinforced roadbed materials were investigated through the real scale roadbed tests. It was also found that the reinforced roadbed with reinforced roadbed materials has less elastic and plastic settlement than the one with soil. The slag roadbed was more effective than the crushed stone roadbed with the same condition for load distribution. Therefore considering overall characteristics of reinforced roadbed material, the optimum thickness was recommended as 50 cm. Furthermore the real scale model test under the simulated rainfall condition, the settlement in the slag roadbed was about 8 times smaller than the settlement in the soil roadbed.

Dynamic fatigue test is carried out using soil model box for the evaluation of performance of three different roadbed materials. Bearing capacity, settlement and mud pumping phenomenon of each roadbed materials as well as penetration of model ballast into the roadbeds are investigated. It was found that settlement of slag and crushed stone roadbed is smaller than the soil roadbed during dynamic fatigue test with same initial conditions.

The benefit of reinforced roadbeds, such as roadbed reinforced with slag and roadbed with crushed stone has been known among engineers. In this study, model soil box test is executed to determine optimum roadbed thickness. As a result, a empirical solution for the settlement of reinforced roadbeds was suggested. Furthermore, optimum thickness of reinforced roadbed could be determined based on the settlement characteristic of reinforced roadbed among the several variables.

The reinforced roadbed should have the ability to spread out the load intensity lower than the bearing capacity of the subgrade of track structure as well as to prevent the softening of roadbed by providing appropriate stiffness in the roadbed, thus fully supports the track structures. Full scale reinforced roadbeds with several different types of monotoring sensors was also constructed to evaluate the performance of each reinforced roadbed through the continuous monitoring while the train operation. In this study, Field tests such as PLT, SASW were also carried out at each reinforced roadbed. The results of the field and lab tests, installation and calibration of sensors, as well as construction condition of the reinforced roadbed are presented.

In this study, performance of reinforced railroad roadbeds with the crushed stones was investigated through the real scale railroad roadbed tests. Several real scale reinforced railroad roadbeds were constructed in the laboratory with different subgrade conditions and were tested with the estimated actual train loads including the impact loading of train. The affecting factors such as settlement, earth pressure and stress change at the surface of reinforced roadbed, subgrade layers as well as surface of rails were measured. It was found through the actual testing that for the roadbed with the same thickness, the settlement and vibration level (velocity) of reinforced roadbed decreases with the increase of reaction modulus of subgrade. The settlement of reinforced roadbed with the same reaction modulus of subgrade also decreases with the increase of thickness of the reinforced roadbed.
Conventional railroad roadbeds constructed with soils can easily deteriorate with time due to the increase of repeated traffic loading, increase of train speed, built-up of ground water on the roadbed and decrease of permeability in the roadbed layer, etc. In this study, performance of reinforced railroad roadbeds with the crushed stones was investigated through the real scale roadbed tests and numerical analysis. It was found that the reinforced roadbed with crushed stone had less elastic and plastic vertical displacement(settlement) than general soil roadbed regardless of the number of loading cycles. It was also found through the actual testing that for the roadbed with the same thickness, the displacement of reinforced roadbed decreases with the increase of subgrade reaction modulus. The settlement of reinforced roadbed with the same subgrade reaction modulus also decreases with the increase of thickness of the reinforced roadbed. However, the subgrade reaction modulus is a more important factor to the total plastic displacement of the track than the thickness of the crushed stone roadbed.
Subway routes $1{\sim}4$ were constructed in gravel roadbed track structure in consideration of the technological capabilities, construction cost and duration at the time of the initial construction. As such, 224.8km, approximately 81.2% of entire length, of total length of railway track at 276.9km was constructed on gravel roadbed. However, improvement of gravel roadbed to concreted roadbed began in 1998 due to problems including frequent repair works and limited time application for such works caused by occurrence of tract distortion during operation as well as lowering of roadbed functions and generation of dust caused by frictional power, impact absorption capabilities, abrasion and crushing of gravel on roadbed. Currently, this improvement is continuing with target of converting entire route into concreted roadbed structure. Therefore, this Study modifies formula for setting cant, analyze the correlation between wearing of rail side of the curvature and cant insufficiency following increasing of the running speed of the train, and to present the directions for fundamental review for adjustment of cant insufficiencies at the time of improvement of gravel roadbed to concreted roadbed that is being implemented on the operational tracks of the railway trains.

This study examined the long-term behavior of a roadbed using high-speed railway concrete track and roadbed measurement data and evaluated the long-term performance of the track and roadbed. Recently, high-speed railway track type has been adopted as a concrete slab. On the other hand, the concrete track is vulnerable to roadbed settlement. In the case of gravel tracks, it is easy to restore the original state by maintenance even if the roadbed settles. On the other hand, in the case of the concrete track, if excessive settlement of the roadbed occurs, cracks are generated continuously on the slabs and sleepers, resulting in greatly reduced usability. For this reason, it is difficult to restore the original state only by partial maintenance. In this paper, a long-term performance evaluation was carried out on a concrete track during operation by monitoring the measurement data of sensors buried from the beginning of construction for approximately 3 years after the high-speed railway opened. Performance evaluation methods include a performance evaluation of track/roadbed when the train passes, long-term track and roadbed performance evaluation, analysis of the track/roadbed effect on long-term settlement and analysis of the factors influencing long-term settlement. The trail response of KTX-Sancheon was greatest in the track/roadbed performance evaluation by train. The results of the long-term track and roadbed performance evaluation were measured within the standard values. The track and roadbed performance impact assessment with long-term settlement was strongly related to TCL settlement. The influences of the water content and groundwater level were verified by analyzing the external factors of long-term settlement. Through such a method, the stability of a track/roadbed can be secured.
Ballasted track on an asphalt roadbed can be beneficial for its various effects such as (i) decreasing of roadbed thickness by dispersing train load; (ii) prevention of both strength reduction and weakening in roadbed system by preventing rainwater penetration; and (iii) reducing maintenance cost by preventing roadbed mud-pumping and frostbite. With these beneficial effects, ballasted track on asphalt roadbed has been widely used in Europe and Japan, and relevant research for applying such ballasted track on asphalt roadbed systems in Korea is ongoing. In this study, full-scale static and dynamic train load tests were performed to compare the performance of ballasted track on asphalt roadbed and ballasted track. The optimum thickness levels of asphalt and reinforced roadbeds, corresponding to the design criteria for reinforced roadbed of high-speed railway, was estimated using the FEM program ABAQUS. Test results show that the earth pressure on reinforced roadbed of ballasted track on the asphalt roadbed was relatively low compared with that of simple ballasted track. The elastic and plastic displacements of simple ballasted track on the asphalt roadbed were also lower than those of ballasted track. These test results may indicate that the use of ballasted track on asphalt roadbed is an advantageous system in view of long-term maintenance.
