A Study on the Measurement of Texture Depth of Pavement Using Portable Laser Profiler (Portable Laser Profiler를 이용한 도로 포장의 노면조직 깊이 측정 방법 연구)

  • PURPOSES : Skid resistance and noise of roads highly depend on the characteristics of pavement texture. Therefore, estimation of texture characteristics may give useful information for the skid resistance and noise of road. Generally, Sand Patch Test is performed in order to estimate MTD(Mean Texture Depth). However, it is time-consuming and needs traffic control. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of measurement texture depth using the Portable Laser Profiler that give the MPD(Mean Profile Depth). METHODS : MTD and MPD were collected on the number of expressway sections including Central Inland Test Road sections in Korea. Statistical analysis are performed to establish the relationship between MTD data based on Sand Patch Test and MPD data obtained by the Portable Laser Profiler. RESULTS : Linear relationship MPD and MTD is observed for both of asphalt pavement and concrete pavement such as R-square of 0.51 to 0.58. CONCLUSIONS : Even though, the test method and definition of MPD and MTD are different. EMTD(Estimated Mean Texture Depth) can be obtained by using the correlationship between MPD with MTD.

Development of the Road Profiling System and Evaluation of Korean Roads Roughness Characteristics (도로면 측정 분석 시스템 개발 및 국내 도로면 특성평가 응용 연구)

  • The ‘AEIPR’(Accelerometer Established Inertial Profiling Reference) method has been applied to measure the road profile. The dynamic road profiling method using AEIPR has the advantages of cost effectiveness, measuring speed and relatively high reliability. However, it is required to improve the double integration algorithm to get the measurement results with the accuracy of hither level. In the first part of this paper, the effective double integration algorithm is suggested and the ‘Road Profiler’ software is developed on the basis of the algorithm. Road profiling tests are performed using the developed ‘Road Profiler’ system on the specially designed tracks for the durability tests and the various types of pubic roads. Test results are shown and evaluated by the international road evaluation indicies and classification.

Classification of the Korean Road Roughness (국내 도로면 거칠기 특성 분류 기준에 관한 연구)

  • A Korean Road Roughness Classification(KRC) method is proposed. Using a dynamic road profiling device equipped with the Accelerometer Established Inertial Profiling Reference(AEIPR) method, road profile measurement is performed on various types of public paved roads in Korea. The road profiling data are processed to classify the characteristics of Korean road roughness. The resultant Korean road roughness classification(KRC) is shown different characteristics compared to the road classification proposed by ISO, MIRA, and Wong. The proposed KRC is composed of 8 classes(A-H, very good-poor) based on the power spectral density and is in good agreements with the characteristics of Korean paved road roughness and can be used well in vehicle ride comfort simulation using domestic road profile.

Development of an Automatic Transverse and Longitudinal Road Profile Measurement System (노면 종.횡단 요철 자동 측정 시스템 개발)

  • The reliable data relating to the condition of road surface is of increasing importance to deliver the road condition to driver and road management authority. This paper describes the development of a new high-speed. automatic, road data collection system, which collects the longitudinal road data with ${\sim}30cm$ interval covering full width of the road at 100km/h speed. The system calculates the international roughness index (IRI) from the collected data and displays the IRI and road profile data on the screen. To develope the system, we implement an optical range finder, advanced distance and motion detectors, and signal processing and display modules. The measurement accuracy of the system at 70km/h operation speed shows ${\pm}0.1m/km$ in the IRI for the standard road. To confirm the performance of the developed system, we also measure the IRI of a deployed highway road and compare the results with a conventional system and human eye measurement results.

Analysis of Texture Depth of Asphalt Pavement Based on Profile Analysis (프로파일 분석을 통한 아스팔트 콘크리트 포장 텍스쳐 크기 분석)

  • In this study, the profiles of asphalt pavements were measured using a lightweight profiler and depths of macrotexture were analyzed based on the measured profiles. Profiles on dense graded asphalt pavement, prorous asphalt pavement, stone mastic asphalt (SMA) pavement, and base layer measured, and depth of macrotexture were calculated and analyzed. Profiles on the pavement that happened as asphalt mixture segregation were measured and depths of macrotexture were analyzed. The results showed that the depths of macrotexture of asphalt pavement were effectively calculated using the measured profiles, and the depths of macrotexture for different asphalt pavements were analyzed. The pavement areas which have asphalt mixture segregation were detected based on analysis of macrotexture depths.

Evaluation of Pavement Smoothness on Optimized Rehabilitated Section (최소단면 보수지역의 평탄성 평가)

  • In this study, the profiles of optimized rehabilitated section was measured by a lightweight inertial profiler, and pavement smoothness was evaluated. To analyze the repeatability of the used lightweight profiler, two repeatable measurements were conducted. The agreement between two repeatable measurements were evaluated by Cross-correlation function. Pavement smoothness of the optimized rehabilitated pavement section and existing area was compared in terms of International Roughness Index and Profilograh Index. In general, the pavement smoothness of the rehabilitated sections was not good compared to the existing pavement sections. The analysis results could be used for the evaluation of pavement smoothness of the optimized rehabilitated pavement sections.

Estimation of Tire-Pavement Noise for Concrete Pavement by using Mean Profile Depth (Mean Profile Depth를 이용한 콘크리트 포장의 타이어-노면소음 산정)

  • PURPOSES: There is a need to develop a method to incorporate tire-pavement noise in the pavement management system. Tire-pavement noise highly depends on the characteristics of pavement texture. Therefore, estimation of texture characteristics may give useful information to predict tire-pavement noise. This study aimed to find the relationship between tire-pavement noise and MPD(Mean Profile Depth) for concrete pavement. METHODS: MPD and tire-pavement noise were collected on the number of expressway sections including Central Inland Test Road in Korea. Statistical analysis was performed to find the correlationship between MPD and tire-pavement noise. In addition, multiple regression analysis to find the tire-pavement noise based on MPD and type of concrete pavement texture. RESULTS: Linear relationship between MPD and tire-pavement noise is observed for concrete pavement. Furthermore, a forensic equation to estimate tire-pavement noise based on MPD and texture types of concrete pavement is suggested. CONCLUSIONS: Tire-pavement noise on concrete pavement can be predicted based on the consideration of texture type and MPD estimation.

A Conceptual Design and Feasibility Analyses of an Automated Pothole Patching Machine (도로면 포트홀 유지보수 자동화 장비의 개념디자인 및 경제적 타당성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The primary objective of this study is to develop a conceptual design of automated pothole patching machine that improves the conventional work in safety, quality, and productivity. For this, the following research works are conducted sequentially; 1)literature review, 2)selection of element technology for conceptual design, 3)deduction of work process and conceptual design, 4)life cycle cost analysis of the conceptual design. As a result, X-Y table telescopic manipulator, pothole patching end effector, realtime pothole recognizer, 3D pothole volume profiler, automated pothole patching machine controller are selected as core technologies. Furthermore, a conceptual design and working process of an automated pothole patching machine are developed based on the core technologies. According to the life cycle cost analysis result, the cost of the automated method was 38.3% less than that of the conventional method, and the economic efficiency was also superior(ROR 77.1%, Break-even Point 23.8month). It is expected that the application range and impact on the construction industry will be enormous due to the increasing trend of road maintenance market.

The Study of the Roughness of the Pavement on the Bridge Deck and Approach Slab using a 5year(2003 to 2007) Pavement Condition Survey Data (HPMS 데이터를 이용한 고속도로 교량 및 뒷채움구간 평탄성 특성 연구)

  • Using a 5 year(2003 to 2007) pavement condition survey data from the highway pavement management system(HPMS), the roughness of the bridge deck pavement was analyzed. Based on the result of this analysis, this study tried to identify the factors affecting the deterioration of the bridge deck pavement condition. The data from HPMS indicates that the roughness of the bridge deck pavement is worse than that of the general pavement on the roadbed. The worse roughness of the bridge deck pavement is caused by the settlement of approach slab as well as the surface distress on the bridge deck pavement. In order to improve effectively the roughness of the bridge deck pavement, a management system was established in which not only the regular automated pavement condition survey to check the distress of surface of the bridge deck pavement was adopted but an automated surface profiler to check the degree of settlement of approach slab was applied.
