In recent years owing to extensive land reclamation, increased river engineering activites and morer intense flood plain use, river geomorphology has attracted considerable attention. One of outstanding problems has been maintenance of river meanders and nearly all natural river exhibit the tendency to meander. Often the meander geometry was fitted in to various idealized model. COnsequently, both the selection of data and the methods to determine the geometric parameters were highly subject to individual preferences. This study applied statistical analysis in tipifying their shape and analysised meander characteristics by channel model of line generalization algorithm. This method is applied to Geum river system. The results show that the variance of curvature is a better index to describe the meander intensity and the kurtosis is a good index to characterize the total length of the straight sections for a given reach. The results also show that channel model of line generalization algorithm is a good model in analysis of meander characterisitics.

In recent localized heavy rainfalls have been arising from abnormal climate change. People are concerning about damages with increasing the frequency of flooding. Therefore, we need to understand river hydraulic characteristics and management to reduce damage from flooding. To study hydraulic characterization of Sincheon experimental catchment HEC-RAS (Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System) model which provided by U.S Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) was applied. This study analyzed and compared water level the frequency flood for 100 years and 200 years by clark unit Hydrography. The change of the water level of Daejeon bridge, Sincheon bridge and Singi bridge showed increased for all conditions. The flow rate for the Daejeon bridge and the Sincheon bridge showed an increase, but the Sinki bridge showed a decreasing flow rate overally, except for 1hour-100 years. The verification result showed that the model was able to simulate the water level with 0.4709 coefficient of determination and error ration ranging from 1 to 3%.

Satae cheon, a tributary of the Suip cheon in Yanggu, Gangwon province, is an international river extended to North Korea. Most of drainage basin area of the river was the fierce battle field during the Korean War(1950-1953) and hard to access as it located between the MDL(Military Demarcation Line) and the CCZ(Civilian Control Zone: about 10km south from MDL). By the restriction of access to the sites, most of natural landscape have been well conserved except limited use for military activities. Even the landfoms in that area were not studied, except the government's heritage reports. Satae Cheon's channel follows the Imdang fault line(N-S) to Satae-ri and flow to west to the Dutayeon area. The river meanders along geological structure or weak line at the Dutayeon area. The meandering channel was shorten by the meander cut which linked the thalweg line of meander loop ant the meander neck. As a result of this cut, the river cliff formed by the Satae cheon became the part of newly formed channel bed and the S-forms are formed. After the channel route stabilized, channel incised the rock with large potholes and undulating walls were formed. The channel width changes from 1m to 10m with restriction of the undulating walls, so this part can be regarded as inner channel or inner gorge. From the point of planar forms it also can be slot-type canyon.
Hydraulic model was developed to analyze the complex flow due to channel structures, tide, and tributaries in the lower Han river and Imjin river. DWOPER-2K model which can automatically process the data transformation in the model was developed as the 1-D hydraulic routing model. Observed data in tidal zone and the recent channel geometry data were collected for hydraulic model. And the flow over the Jamsil and Singok submerged weir was analyzed properly and roughness coefficient was optimized to each regions and each discharges. By the results of verification of the model, the model developed in this study may contribute to improvement of the accuracy of flood forecasting and channel management because this model can efficiently and properly analyze the various kind of flow occurred in the region of the lower Han river and Imjin river.

The grain size characteristics of river sediments and the characteristics of bedrock were investigated for the 24km section of the Dong River upstream of the Han River. The bedrock of the study area is various limestone belonging to the Paleozoic Choseon limestone group, and Mesozoic sandstone and conglomerate occur in some areas. Most of the river channel is made of limestone, and most of the river bottom is covered with fluvial sediments. More than 70% of these sediments are sandstone and conglomerate, rather than limestone which forms the basis of the valley. Sediment particles seem to have been supplied upstream of the study area rather supplied from the slope near of the channel. It is difficult to find the statistically significant difference in the shape of the sediment particles of limestones and non-limestones. However, limestones has platy forms rather than block forms, it can be assumed that the limestone was supplied from the surrounding valley wall and transported over a short distance. The particle sizes of DG1~DG2(the upstream section) are decreasing in the downstream direction. However, at DG3, which is a tributary, Jijangcheon, confluence particle size increases and at DG4 particle size increases more. In the case of DG4, it may be influenced by the influx of tributaries, but it also can be supposed as the impact of the large flood in 2002. In the downstream parts(DG5~DG7), the particle size decreases exponentially with distance. The rebound strength of stream sediments and bedrock was measured by using Schmidt hammer. Limestone showed lower rebound strength than non-limestone. According to the results of the sediment and bedrock, it can be seen that the sandstone and conglomerate with high rebound values pass through valley with the relatively low strength limestone. The sediments of limestone were decreased in grain size more rapidly than those of limestone sediments.
The present study performed the impact of the change of low-flow channel on aquatic habitat in a reach of the Wonju-cheon Stream, Korea. The target species was Zacco platypus, a dominant species in the middle- and upper-stream of Wonju Cheon. The River2D model was used for the computation of the flow and the habitat suitability index model was used to estimate the quantity and quality of fish habitat using habitat suitability curves. First, for the restoration to low-flow channel, the restoration was conducted in a form close-to-nature flow channel, and the width of the low-flow channel was expanded and reduced. The results indicated that the Weighted Usable Area (WUA) of the target species improved by about 72% when the width of the low-flow channel was expanded, and that the fish habitat decreased by about 25% when the width of the low-flow channel was reduced.
Synthetic unit hydrograph equations for rainfall run-off characteristics analysis and estimation of design flood have long and quite frequently been presented, the Snyder and SCS synthetic unit hydrograph. The major inputs to the Snyder and SCS synthetic unit hydrograph are lag time and peak coefficient. In this study, the methods for estimating lag time and peak coefficient for small watersheds proposed by Zhao and McEnroe(1999) were applied to the Kum river basin in Korea. We investigated lag times of relatively small watersheds in the Kum river basin in Korea. For this investigation the recent rainfall and stream flow data for 10 relatively small watersheds with drainage areas ranging from 134 to 902 square kilometers were gathered and used. 250 flood flow events were identified along the way, and the lag time for the flood events was determined by using the rainfall and stream flow data. Lag time is closely related with the basin characteristics of a given drainage area such as channel length, channel slope, and drainage area. A regression analysis was conducted to relate lag time to the watershed characteristics. The resulting regression model is as shown below: ※ see full text (equations) In the model, Tlag is the lag time in hours, Lc is the length of the main river in kilometers and Se is the equivalent channel slope of the main channel. The coefficient of determinations (r$^2$)expressed in the regression equation is 0.846. The peak coefficient is not correlated significantly with any of the watershed characteristics. We recommend a peak coefficient of 0.60 as input to the Snyder unit-hydrograph model for the ungauged Kum river watersheds
This study investigated longitudinal changes in riverbed materials properties and temporal alteration of river channel geomorphology in the Geum River basin, where two multipurpose dams(Yongdam Dam and Daecheong Dam) were built in upstream area. We carried out grain size distribution analyses and measured soil organic matter contents of riverbed materials taken at the upper and lower sites of the two large dams. We also estimated the channel width, bar area and vegetation encroachment using the oldest map and aerial photographs taken before and after the construction of the dams. The results can contribute to increasing understandings of dam induced habitat alteration in river ecosystem.
Flow and bed changes due to tributary inflow variation at the confluence of the Namhan River and the Geumdang Stream were analyzed in this study using a two-dimensional numerical model. As a result of the numerical analysis, the velocity downstream of the confluence was greater than the velocity upstream of the confluence in the main channel regardless of the magnitude of tributary inflow. However, as tributary discharge increased, the channel erosion was accelerated and the dry area was produced at the tributary. Due to the bed erosion at the tributary, sediment transport was increased and the eroded sediments were deposited in the confluence area. The deposition in the confluence area changed the flow direction at the main channel to the left side and the localized flow eroded the channel bed at the left side. Therefore, it is expected that bank failure due to continuous bed degradation is possible in this area.

Sedimentation changes related with bottom shear stress attenuation at JangHang channel in the Keum River Estuary, where several huge coastal constructions including an estuarine dam have been conducted for last 2 decades, were evaluated for 7 cases to figure out passage hindrance through the channel by a hydrodynamic model using hind-casting technique from 1988 to 2000 at every 2 years interval. Due to the construction of Keum River Estuary Dam, the maximum bottom shear stress rapidly lessened to $0.2-0.6N/m^2$ compared to$1-2N/m^2$ in natural status. Especially it marks below the critical shear stress of $0.4N/m^2$ resulting in severe siltation in the channel just after the closing of dam gates in 1994. It is concluded that the dam may block the tidal energy propagation to upstream and directly results in sedimentation environment in front of dam site. It is also revealed that at least 20% of passage hindrance of small fishing boats through the channel could be counted due to sedimentation by analysis of predicted mean spring tides.
