The Effect of Investing into Distribution Information and Communication Technologies on Banking Performance the Empirical Evidence from an Emerging Country

  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate the impact of investing into technology development on banking performance in an emerging country. Research design, data and methodology: Based on the data of 12 commercial banks listed in Vietnam from 2011 to 2019 and performing multivariable regression analyses as well as conducting a variety of robustness tests, we carry out the empirical investigation to discover this impact. Results: Our empirical evidence shows that these spending help to improve significantly performance of banks. Particularly, the technology expenditures have positive effect on the net interest margin and the non-interest income in which the level of influence on the latter is relatively remarkable in comparison with the former. At the same time, the result does not support the view that increasingly spending on technology may lead banks to face the risk of instability. Conclusions: Overall, our empirical analysis indicates that increasing investment into distribution information and communication technologies will help to enhance business strategies of banks and thus we advocate the bright side of technology development and digitalization in banking sector. We believe that the research is useful for both managers, regulators and policy makers in Vietnam as well as in countries having similar financial structure.

Suitability of stochastic models for mortality projection in Korea: a follow-up discussion

  • Due to an increased demand for longevity risk analysis, various stochastic models have been suggested to evaluate uncertainly in estimated life expectancy and the associated value of future annuity payments. Recently updated data allow us to analyze mortality for a longer historical period and extended age ranges. This study followed up previous case studies using up-to-date empirical data on Korean mortality and the recently developed R package StMoMo for stochastic mortality models analysis. The suitability of stochastic mortality models, focusing on retirement ages, was investigated with goodness-of-fit, validity of models, and ability of generating reasonable sets of simulation paths of future mortality. Comparisons were made across various types of models. Based on the selected models, the variability of important estimated measures associated with pension, annuity, and reverse mortgage were quantified using simulations.

  • The successful management of software (SW) projects is a continuous concern to managers, which is attributed to the contradictory demands that most projects are facing; meeting user requirements within time and budget limit while flexibly dealing risks during the progress of the projects. The present study asserts project performance and risk mitigation are not tradeoff but to be achieved simultaneously, which is called SW project ambidexterity. Drawing on the literature on organizational behavior, hypotheses are developed speculating the relation among project performance, risk mitigation, team collective improvisation, team behavioral integration, and team diversity. Using empirical data collected from 102 SW project teams of 507 team members in South Korea, empirical analysis indicates team collective improvisation is a significant antecedent to SW project ambidexterity, playing a pivotal role to balance the contradictory demands. Furthermore, team behavioral integration positively influences the degree of team collective improvisation, and the magnitude of the relation is partially contingent on the team members' age and major diversity. The present study advances theory by providing a context specific explanation about the SW project ambidexterity and its precedents.

A Empirical Study on Influence of Safety on Elementary School Road Considering Commuting Distance & Mode Type (통학거리 및 수단특성을 반영한 초등학교 안전도 영향관계 실증연구)

  • This study deals with actual commuting distance and influence of risk factors depending on commuting distance and mode in order to reestablish actual commuting zone of primary school students. Data mining analysis(CHAID) was applied for this reestablishment using survey results from 6,927 primary school students in Seoul Metro. Six risk factors; convenience level of commuting path condition, convenience level of road crossing condition, vehicle speed on commuting path, segregation level between commuter and vehicle, congestion level of commuting path, and public security level and two mode; walking and cycle are considered in the analysis. As the results of CHAID analysis, commuting distance was divided into four zones; Internal Zone(0.491km under), External Zone(0.492 ~ 1.492km, 1.493 ~ 2.699km), Commutable Zone(2.70km over), and awareness level on safety is declined as commuting distance is increased. The risk factor affecting on safety is recognized differently by students depending on commuting distance and mode. For students commuting by walking, vehicle speed on commuting path and convenience level of commuting path condition are recognized as the prime risk factor within Internal Zone and Commutable Zone, respectively. For students commuting by cycle, convenience level of road crossing condition and vehicle speed on commuting path are recognized as the prime risk factor within Commutable Zone. Analysis results show that improved plan and program for commuting path for primary school students are required considering actual commuting distance and method.

  • Purpose: Trust plays an important role in e-commerce because consumers perceive more risk involved with this type of shopping than traditional way of shopping. Trust is defined as complex and multidimensional issue. This paper argues that trust should be considered to have two important components as trust belief and trust intention, in which trust belief has three components as competence, integrity and benevolence. Research design, data and methodology: This study examines the relationship between retailer website quality (web design, navigation, information), reputation and risk toward trust. In addition, trust and risk toward buying behavior are also considered, leading to customer satisfaction. The paper is conducted on a sample of 594 customers with direct experience of online shopping in Vietnam. Both confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and a structural equation model (SEM) were utilised. Results: Empirical findings from this paper indicate that trust is high order construct. Website quality and reputation have positive impacts on customers' trust. Trust has a positive relationship to buying behavior and customers' satisfaction while perceived risk has negative relationship to buying behavior. In contrast, a relationship between perceived risk and trust is not supported in this study. Conclusions: Improving reputation and website quality (especially information) may increase customers' trust and eventually lead to purchase decision.

  • In this paper, we propose a monitoring system that can monitor gas leakage concentrations in real time and forecast the amount of gas leaked after one minute. When gas leaks happen, they typically lead to accidents such as poisoning, explosion, and fire, so a monitoring system is needed to reduce such occurrences. Previous research has mainly been focused on analyzing explosion characteristics based on gas types, or on warning systems that sound an alarm when a gas leak occurs in industrial areas. However, there are no studies on creating systems that utilize specific gas explosion characteristic analysis or empirical urban gas data. This research establishes a deep learning model that predicts the gas explosion risk level over time, based on the gas data collected in real time. In order to determine the relative risk level of a gas leak, the gas risk level was divided into five levels based on the lower explosion limit. The monitoring platform displays the current risk level, the predicted risk level, and the amount of gas leaked. It is expected that the development of this system will become a starting point for a monitoring system that can be deployed in urban areas.

  • Purpose - This study aims to analyze the relationship between perceived risk, privacy concerns, continual intention to use of Fintech services. Design/methodology/approach - This research developed a conceptual framework using attitude theory and analyzed the relationship between risk perception to Fintech services, Fintech concerns(service concern, platform concern, network concern, device concern, and privacy concern), and continual use in the context of Fintech services. In this study, Data analyzed using the PLS(partial least squares) structural equation model approach. Findings - As a result of empirical analysis, Fintech risk perception affected service concern, platform concern, network concern, device concern, and privacy concern. In addition, it was found that privacy risk did not affect continual use of Fintech services. In addition, among Fintech service concerns, platform concern, network concern, and privacy concern did not affect continual use of Fintech services. However, only device concern affected the intention to continual use of Fintech services. Research implications or Originality - The results will help to understand the psychology of Fintech service users and develop more stable Fintech services continual use strategies.

  • This study has examined the allocation of risk in Korea's private provided Infrastructure(PPI) with the following contents (1) Developing a quantitative risk allocation model for Korea's PPI and (2) examining the implication of changes in the minimum revenue guarantees (MRG) clause of government legislation using the developed empirical model. The model of this study adopts and extends H. Yamaguchi's model developed in 2002. To investigate Korea's actual risk allocation deals, the author incorporated the MRG framework. The payment related to the MRG is indeterminable. Hence. the average MRG rate was calculated using probabilistic risk analysis. The risk allocation model is applied to the two eases to validate the model and evaluate the project's VFM(Value for Money). As the revenue guarantee rate is lowered, the government subsidies are increased. This in turn worsens VFM. The same relationship is true when the revenue guarantee Period is shortened.

A Study on Smart City Risk Factors and Resistance (스마트시티 위험요인과 저항에 관한 연구)

  • Smart City is highly anticipated to solve the problems of existing cities and create new added value, but there is also increasing concern about security risks. The negative view of smart city according to security risk awareness is a problem that needs to be improved in order to activate the fourth industrial revolution technology and develop smart city. This study examined risk factors in smart cities based on perceived risk and user resistance theory, and empirically analyzed the relationship with resistance attitudes. According to the empirical analysis with 288 research samples, security, social, and physical risk factors directly affect smart city resistance, while financial, performance, and privacy risk have no significant effect. In addition, it was verified that the security risk can is an antecedent factor for other risk factors, and it was confirmed that it is required to separately discuss the security and privacy risk in the smart city environment. This study shows that it is necessary to prepare policy supports for social interactions as well as security and physical safety issues in order to activate smart city by discussing the risk factors that negatively affect smart city perception from the public's point of view.

A Study on Regulatory Focus and Risk Taking Affecting Entrepreneurial Motivation Under Uncertainty (불확실성하에서 창업동기에 영향을 미치는 조절초점과 위험감수성에 관한 연구)

  • This study is a study on the regulatory focus and entrepreneurship that affect entrepreneurial motivation under uncertainty. In the empirical analysis results between the prevention focus, risk taking, and economic entrepreneurial motive, which were not observed in previous studies in Korea, this study tried to supplementally verify the previous studies by focusing on the limitations of the sample suggested as limitations. In particular, under a special external environment where uncertainty is deepening due to COVID-19 and the economic situation is being severely hit, we regressively analyze regulatory focus and risk taking, which are innate personal characteristics that can affect entrepreneurial motives. The mediating effect of risk taking was demonstrated. As a result of the empirical results, it was found that the prevention focus, risk taking, and economic entrepreneurial motivation had a significant effect, and it was shown that risk taking had a mediating effect between the prevention focus and the economic entrepreneurial motivation. This result is meaningful as a result not observed in previous studies, and it is judged that the control focus, which is an individual characteristic with a large innate tendency, interacts with the risk taking of the acquired tendency to influence the motivation to start a business. The results of this study can be of practical help by understanding and concentrating on regulatory focus and risk taking when conducting entrepreneurship or entrepreneurship education programs to entrepreneurs who dream of or want to start a business amid the growing uncertainty of the external environment. On the other hand, it is necessary to confirm whether these results, which are different from previous studies, are the effect of sample diversity or the external environment such as Corona 19, and re-verification through additional research is needed in the future.
