  • Tree-ring chronologies can be used to date historical buildings and furniture by matching them with the chronologies of living trees or previously dated samples. Tree-ring dating gives a calender year to each tree ring and produces the felling dates of logs or woods which had been used for buildings. In Korea, several chronologies of Japanese red pine(Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc.,'sonamu' in Korean), a major species for the wooden building materials, have been developed and used for dating historical buildings. Daejojeon of Changduck Palace is known to be reconstructed in A.D. 1920 after burned-out in A.D. 1917. Instead of new woods, Daejojeon was reconstructed by reusing the woods of Kyotaejeon in Kyungbok Palace. We sampled total of 26 wood samples which were replaced during the repair process of Daejojeon in 1995. Felling dates of the samples were determined by the dendrochronological crossdating method. Crossdating method employs graphic comparison of the master patterns (ring-width plots of living trees or known dates) with those of the sample chronologies of unknown dates. The cutting dates of Daejojeon woods were divided in two groups. One was the late 1860s and the other 1880s. The results confirmed that Kyotaejeon was reconstruced first in the A.D 1860s and then in late 1880s after burning out in 1876.

  • In this paper, we deal with the TLP evaluation results for GGNMOS in ESD protection device of conventional CMOS process. An evaluation parameter for GGNMOS is that repeatability evaluation for reference device($W/L=50\;{\mu}m1.0\;{\mu}m$) and following factors for design as gate width, number of finger, present or not for N+ gurad -ring, space of N-field region to contact and present or not for NLDD layer. The result of repeatability was showed uniformity of lower than 1 %. The result for design factor evaluation was ; 1) gate width leading to increase It2, 2) An increase o( finger number was raised current capability(It2), and 3) present of N+ gurad-ring was more effective than not them for current sink. Finally we suggest the optimized design conditions for GGNMOS in evaluated factor as ESD protection device of conventional CMOS process.

  • This study was carried out to investigate some mechanical properties for wood rational utilization of heartwood and sapwood in radiata pine according to basic density, ring width and proportion of latewood which were grown in New Zealand. This result were summarized as follow: Heartwood showed 35.78(MPa) of the compression strength parallel to the grain while sapwood showed 42.08(MPa). The modulus of rupture in static bending was higher in sapwood showing 86.12(MPa) than in heartwood 72.99(MPa) Heartwood had 7.38(GPa) for the modulus of elasticity in static bending and sapwood 8.17(GPa). As the basic density and proportion of latewood increased: compression strength parallel to the grain, MOR and MOE in static bending had a tendency to increase. As ring width increased, the mechanical properties decreased.

  • This study verified the correlations between vegetation factors, such as the number of individual species and species diversity, and soil factors in Chamaecyparis obtusa (CO) stands in Jeollanam-do. Also, the site environmental factors that affect the annual growth of CO ring width were analyzed. Positive correlations were found between the species diversity index and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), available phosphate, and exchangeable $K^+$ (P<0.01). In addition, strong positive correlations were also found between the number of species that appeared in the study site and CEC, available phosphorus, exchangeable $K^+$ and exchangeable $Mg^{2+}$ (P<0.01). Tree ring growth showed strong correlations with the nutrient holding capacity and fertility of soil, including available phosphate, exchangeable $K^+$, CEC, and electrical conductivity (P<0.01). The explanatory variables of tree ring growth in CO were composed of exchangeable $K^+$, organic matter content, and soil pH. The regression model had a high level of explanatory power, 74.4%. In this model, the annual growth of CO ring width increased when exchangeable $K^+$ and organic matter content were higher but decreased when soil pH was lower. According to the analysis, it is found that the annual growth of CO ring width was significantly affected by soil fertility, including available phosphate, exchangeable $K^+$, CEC, and electrical conductivity. In addition, the soil fertility of CO stands seems to be significantly affected by the supply of fallen leaves from the understory vegetation of CO.

  • A simple analytic model for the planar junctions with multiple foating field limiting rings(FLR) is presented which yields analytic expressions for the breakdown voltage and optimum ring spacings. the normalized potential of each ring is derived as a function of the normalized depletion width and the ring spacing. Based on the assumption that the breakdwon occurs simulataneously at cylindrical junctions of FLR structure where the peak sruface electric fields are equal, the optimum ring spacings are determined. The resutls are in good agreement with the simulations obtained from two dimensional device simulation program MEDICI and with the experimental data reported. The normalized experessions allow a calculation of breakdown voltage and optimum spacing over a broad range of junction depth and background doping levels.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of board thickness and ring angle on the characteristics including internal check. ring failure, surface check, end check, collapse, thickness shrinkage and width shrinkage of press-drying. The exprimental materials of 6mm-. 9mm- and 12mm-thick board were taken from heartwood and sapwood of oak (Quercus acutissima Carr.) respectively. And boards were numbered according to position in the log(No. 1 to No. 4 for heartwood :md No. 9 for sapwood). Press-drying was at $145^{\circ}C$ platen temperature and 3.5kg/$Cm^2$ platen pressure. The results of this study were summarized as follows. 1. Drying rates for sapwood materials were greater than those for heartwood materials. And drying rates for thinner materials were greater than those for thicker materials. 2. The thinner boards were. the severer surface checking developed in the heartwood materials, and surface checking for heartwood materials had no tendency in board position for the same thickness. Sapwood materials were completely free from surface checking. 3. End checking for heartwood materials had no tendency in board position. The greater deviation of ring angle from perfectly edge-grained was, the severer and checking developed in the sapwood materials. But end checking did not occur in 6mm-thick sapwood materials. 4. The greater deviation of ring angle from perfectly edge-grained was, the severer end checking developed for heartwood and sapwood materials. As board thickness increased, maternal checking developed more severely for heartwood and sapweed materials. 5. For heartwood materials, ring failure, reduced with increasing deviation of ring angle from perfectly edge-grained except 12mm-thick material and showed no significant difference attributable to board thickness. Sapwood materials were completely free from ring failure. 6. For heartwood and sapwood materials, collapse was slight and showed no significant differences attributable to both board thickness and board position. 7. As deviation of ring angle from perfectly edge-grained increased, shrinkage of board thickness decreased for heartwood and sapwood materials. 8. Shrinkage of board width showed no significant differences attributable to both board thickness and board position for heartwood and sapweed materials.

  • In this paper, the contact behavior characteristics of a primary sealing components such as a seal ring and a seal seat has been presented for a small hydro-power turbine. Using the non-linear FEM analysis, the maximum temperature, the axial displacement, radial differences between a seal ring and a seal seat, and maximum contact normal stress have been analyzed for three optimized sealing profiles in which are designed based on the FEM analysis and Taguchi's experimental method. The three primary sealing profiles between a seal ring and a seal seat are strongly related to a leakage of a water for a hydro-power turbine and wear of a primary sealing component. The computed results show that the contact rubbing area between a seal ring and a seal seat is very important for reducing a friction heating and wear in a sealing gap, and increasing a contact normal stress in primary sealing components. Based on the FEM computation, models II and III in which have a small rubbing surface of seal rings show low dilatation of primary sealing components, and high normal contact stress between a seal ring and a seal seat. Thus, the FEM computed results recommend a short contacting width of a primary sealing component for reducing a leakage and thermal distortions, and expanding a seal life. This means that a conventional primary sealing component may be switched to a reduced sealing face of seal rings.

  • To realize a widely tunable laser diode, a polymer coupled-ring reflector is hybrid- integrated with reflective semiconductor optical amplifier. Even though ring-ring and ring-bus coupling ratios are changed by fabrication errors in waveguide width and height, they remain very close to the single peak condition, ensuring high yield in fabrication. The tuning range is observed to be about 35 nm, maintaining the side mode suppression ratio of about 30 dB.

  • To verify the possibility of using resistograph to estimate the age of big old living trees, we selected three Zelkova serrata and seven Pinus densiflora in Goesan. The mean diameters at breast height of Z. serrata and P. densiflora were 102 (92-116) cm and 80 (65-110) cm, respectively. The heights measured from the ground using a resistograph ranged at 1.2-4.3 m and 0.6-1.1 m for Z. serrata and P. Densiflora, respectively. The most appropriate needle speed to determine tree-ring boundaries for measuring ring width was 1500 r/min for both tree species. Alternatively, the suitable feed speeds for Z. serrata and P. densiflora were 50 cm/min and 150 cm/min, respectively. From the measured data, the mean numbers of tree rings of Z. serrata and P. densiflora were 57 (43-68) and 104 (93-124), respectively, and the mean tree-ring widths were 4.27 mm (3.18-5.09 mm) and 2.93 mm (2.32-3.34 mm), respectively. A comparison between the time series of tree-ring widths by resistograph and that from the local master chronologies tallied for the heartwood part. Finally, this study showed that resistograph can be used to estimate tree ages when a local master chronology is available.

  • To analyze the relationship between climatic factors (mean monthly temperature and total precipitation) and tree-ring growths of Pinus densiflora S. et Z. from National Parks (according to region) of the Korea, 20 trees were sampled from 13 National Parks. Only trees that were successfully cross-dated were used for dendrochronological analysis, and at least 11 trees were included. The tree-ring chronology of Mt. Bukhan (covering the shortest period of 1917 - 2016 [100 years]) was assessed, as well as that of Mt. Seorak (covering the longest period of 1687 - 2017 [331 years]). After cross-dating, each ring width series was double-standardized by first fitting a logarithmic curve and then a 50-year cubic spline. The relationships between climate and tree-ring growth were calculated with response function analysis. The results show a significant positive correlation between a given year's February-March temperature, May precipitation levels, and tree-ring growth. It indicates that a higher temperature in early spring and precipitation before cambium activity are important for radial growths of Pinus densiflora in the Korea.
