This study developed rice packaging paper with exterminating performance against rice weevils such as Tenebroides mauritanicus and Sitophilus oryzae. The exterminating performance of packaging paper was given by treatment of garlic extractives and pine-leaf powder, respectively. For the exterminating test, rice weevils were put in petri dish containing non-treated packaging paper and functional packaging paper for twenty days. Right after being put in the petri dish, the rice weevils moved fast toward the area in the non-treated paper escaping from that in the functional paper. The lethality of the rice weevils on the functional paper reached over 50 per cent. The physical properties of the functional packaging paper were rarely changed in spite of treatment of the exterminating agents.

Extractives of garlic (Allium scorodorpasum) and green pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) were used to prevent and exterminate rice weevils which contaminate stored rice. The extractives exhibited great efficacy against Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castaneum by annihilating all the weevils contained in a bottle. Furthermore, kraft paper coated by 5% extractives also displayed good effectiveness against the rice weevils. When rice weevils were stored with rice in a sack made of extractives-coated kraft paper, the number of living insects was sharply decreased according to elapsed time. In particular, 1,4-benzoquinone, which is very harmful to human, was detected from rice contaminated by Sitophilus oryzae and Tribolium castaneum through the analysis of GC/MS.
The effects of the rice weevils(Sitophilus oryzae L.) on naked barley and wheat were studied in connection with the moisture contents and the molds in the grain under the controlled conditions; R.H. $75\%,\; 28^{\circ}C.$ 1. The moisture contents of control grain were decreased $2.07\%$ for naked barley and $1.29\%$ in wheat in four weeks. 2. The moisture contents of naked barley which had been infested with 100 weevils were decreased $0.29\%$ and were increased $0.79\% in the berley infested with 200 weevils at t beginning. In wheat, the moisture contents were decreased by$0.84\%\; and\; 0.13\%$ in respective experimental lots. 3. The moisture contents of grains have close relation with the population densities of the weevils in the grain. 4. The pattern of the change in the moisture content of grain have close relation with the population densities of the weevils in the grain. 5. The number of the mold colonies in the grain increased exponentially with the increase in the population densities of weevils in the grain. 6. The species of the mold found were A. restrictus and A. versicolor, which were the most abundant, and A. candidus was also found, but Ins common.
Effects of air-tighteness of packing material and aluminum phosphide fumigation on mortality of rice weevil were studied during rice storage. Air-tight storage of rice in sealed bag of 0.1mm PE film or sealed glass bottle reduced the deterioration of rice quality and killed all rice weevils after 60 days storage, while paper bag, PP bag and straw bag storage kept them alive. One tablet of aluminum phosphide in one cubic meter heap of rice packed in PP bag was sufficient to kill all rice weevil in it, when the heap was covered by 0.15 mm PE film during fumigation.
A. The increases moisture contents of grain at R.H $75\%,\; and\; 28^{\circ}C$ 1) The moisture contents of polished rice were $0.4\%,\; 1 \%,\; 3.3\%$ higher than control after 4weeks in which had been infested with 100, 200, 500 individuals of weevil at the beginning. respectively. 2) The greatest moisture contents of polished rice was $16.26\%$ for 500 individual infested grain and the lowest one was $14.86\%$ for the 100 individual weevil infested grain after 4 weeks. 3) The increases in moisture contents of grain were proportionally greater with the size of the weevil population. B. Changes in moisture contents of polished rice at the three levels of cylinder which contain 3kgs of grain and 1000 weevils were infested at the beginning of the experiment. 1) The moisture contents of the grain at all the levels of the cylinder which was not infested with weevil, were consistantly decreased in 12 weeks. 2) The moisture contents of the grain at all the levels of the cylenders which had been infested with 1000 weevils at the beginning of the experiment, were increased except top lovel, that were $15.6\%$ for middle, $41.55\%$ for the bottom levels after 12 weeks. 3) The moisture contents of the grain were greater toward bottom in both weevil infested grain and in control. 4) The moisture content increase might be caused by the respiration of the weevils and deterioration of the grain by microorganisms. 5) There were no tendency to confine the weevils at any definite levels, but as the deterioration of the grain goes on, the weevil moved to top levels of cylinders. 5) The decreases in moisture contents of the grain at the top levels of the cylinders might be caused by diffusion of water to the environment. 7) The differences in temperature at three levels of the cylinder from enviroment were little or negative in control but were greater and positive. and the bottom were higher than top in experimental cylinders. 8) The increases of temperature might be caused by the respiration of the weevil and microorganisms.
1) This experiment was planned to determine the biological effectiveness and persistence of malathion residues on the polished rice under the natural storage conditions in Korea from June to September in 1963). 2) Whole kernel rice was treated with malathion as a spray. The test insects(21 days old were exposed) for a period of 8 days at given day intervals, 3) The biological effcetiveness and persistence of malathirm residues on the polished rice was determined as the mortality of the rice weevils, Sithophilus oryzas L. 4) It was observed from Table 1 and Fig. 1 that 100 per cent mortality was resulted in at 3 days from treatment in all dosages used in this experiment. At :1':days after treatment, the dosages of 16ppm and 8ppm gave still 100 per cent mortality, but the dosages of 4 ppm and 2 ppm resulted in $85.8\pm3.70\;and\; 43.3\pm10.77 per cent mortalities, respectively. After 32 days from the treatment, the mortalities in all dosages used did not show any 100 per cent mortality, At. 107 days after treatment, there was no any difference in the mortality of weevils inall dosages used. 5). It was observed from Fig. 1 and Table 2 that the half-life values of malathion residues on the polished rice was 33 days at 2 ppn!, 54 days at 4 ppm, 73 days at 8 ppm, and 93days at 16ppm, respectively. 6). To get a satisfactory control of the rice weevile with the malathion-residues for more than 5 months under the natural storage conditions, it may be necessary to use higher dosages than those used in this experiment.
A study was conducted to investigate the relationships between the rice weevil and associated storage molds. The results are as follows; 1. All of the developmental stages of the rice weevils are carrying some storage molds in their bodies, and the order of magnitute in the number was the adult, larva and pupa. 2. The molds persist in the body of the rice weevil for 10 days who.1 they were fed on the mold free wheat, and the most persistant mold species was A. candidus. 3. When the mold free weevils were reared on the pure culture of the molds on the wheat, the number of eggs laid by the Lveevil were the greatest for A. candidus. following A. ruber, and the . least number Lvere obtained with A. niger 4. The rice weevil could complete in the pure mold culture on the wheat except for A. niger where the larvae had developed by 2nd or 3rd instars. 3. The shortest developmental periods was obtained with A. candidus and the first adult emerged in 4th week. 6. The unfavorable effects of A. niger on the development of the rice weevil might be associated with the fast growth of the mold together with some unknown effects. 7. There seems to be a protocooperative interaction between these two oraganisms having been developed through the long evolutionary course in common habitat.

Sitophilus oryzae L. (Rice Weevil) is a stored pest of rice that causes extensive loss throughout the world. We tested the leaf powders of 12 plant species viz., Chrysanthemum sp., Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Citrus grandis, Citrus limon, Gliricidia sepium, Gymnema sylvestre, Hemigraphis colorata, Michelia champaca, Moringa oleifera, Murraya koenigii, Polyalthia longifolia, and Sauropus androgynus at dosages of 1.00, 1.50, 2.00 and 3.00g against the adult rice weevil and mortality was recorded at 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 12 and 2l days after treatment (DAT) by direct contact toxicity for their adulticidal effect. We observed 100 percent adult mortality in C. zevlanicum and M. koenigii among the tested leaf powders. In addition, the first-time tested H. colorata and S. androgynus also caused high mortality compared to other plants. All the plant powders caused moderate to high adult mortality. Hence, these plants could be effective botanical insecticides against S. oryzae as they comprise a potential source of bioactive chemicals and are generally free from toxicants. Applications of these natural derivatives in S. oryzae control could reduce the cost of control methods and storage of rice contamination. Therefore, the present study indicates that some plant extracts can be used as an alternative to toxic synthetic chemicals in the management of rice weevils.
A series of experiments were carried out to determine the effect of seed dressing application of chemicals on the early occurring rice insect pests. The number of small brown planthopper adults per 3hills in seed-dressing plot of Imidacloprid WS (Im WS) was 1.6 and its control efficacy was over 90%, compared with that of untreated plot. Rice water weevil was observed in the density of 8.8 larvae per 5 hills seed-dressed Im WS plots(showing 95.5% of control efficacy). Control efficacy of Im WS and Im GR against adult weevils lasted for 26 days after treatment and was higher than that of Carbofuran GR. Rates of injured stems by rice stem maggot and injured leaves by rice leaf miner were 3% and 3.7% in Im WS treatment plot respectively. Seed germination rate after seed dressing with recommended dosage (3 g/seed kg) of Im WS was 71 % on the 1st day and increased on 5th day up to that of untreated seed. The residual amount of Im in seed dressing plot was 0.11 ppm in rice roots and 0.05 ppm in leaves on the 40th day after treatment. Residual effect of Im WSI sustained for 50 days with over 95% insecticidal effect for the rice water weevil and over 90% for the brown planthopper. Quantity of the chemical applied in the field was calculated as 0.084 kg a.i./ha in seed dressing and 0.3 kg a.i./ha in seed box treatment, respectively It took 1 hour to treat insecticide by seed dressing, 2.5 hours by seed box applying, and 3.6 hours by water surface releasing per 990 $m^2$.
Large scale anoxic chamber system(volume $28m^3$) was developed and installed at The National Folk Museum of Korea for the first time in Korea. In order to get optimal anoxic treatment condition, we compared the disinfection of adults, larvae and eggs of cigarette beetles using nitrogen and argon. The time for complete disinfection of cigarette beetles in pine wooden blocks exposed to nitrogen at oxygen concentration 0.01% and 50% in relative humidity were 15 days at $20^{\circ}C$, 10 days at $25^{\circ}C$, and 7 days $30^{\circ}C$. Time were 10 days at $20^{\circ}C$, 7 days at $25^{\circ}C$, and 5 days $30^{\circ}C$ in argon anoxic atmosphere. From the mortality of cigarette beetles, optimal disinfection condition was oxygen concentration 0.01%, $25^{\circ}C$ in temperature, 50% in relative humidity and exposure time 21 days at nitrogen atmosphere. And when large scale anoxic chamber system was supplied nitrogen by nitrogen generator for anoxic treatment of many collections or large collections, it could be operated stably. To verify optimal disinfection condition, museum insects(adults, larvae, pupae and eggs of cigarette beetles in pine wooden blocks, cotton fabrics and Korean paper book, adults and larvae of drugstore beetles in pine wooden blocks, cotton fabrics and Korean paper book, larvae of varied carpet beetles in pine wooden block and silk fabrics, adults and larvae of hide beetles and adults of rice weevils in breeding boxes) which exposed at optimal disinfection condition, were completely killed.
