A Study on the Consumer Preferences and Choice Attributes of Purchasing Organic Instant Rice (유기농 즉석밥 구입 시 소비자 선호 및 선택 속성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study aims to estimate consumption selection attribute, part-worth of organic instant rice through the use of conjoint analysis method. The conjoint analysis is to trace the development of consumer preference among multi-attribute alternatives. The selection attribute was including 4 factors preferred Type of rice, Capacity, Brand and payment price. For this research, a total of 192 questionnaires was collected of which 200 were completed. The research design was a full profile method by orthogonal design then 9 main profiles, 3 holdout sets were created. The results of this research were as follows. Consumers of organic instant rice are consider their importance of selection attributes was in order to price (25.87%), Type of rice (27.231%), Brand/Purchase channel (24.013%) and Capacity (18.494%). The findings of this study have identified 3 clusters for each experience visitors. Each cluster has a different and showed the relative importance or preference values for each accessible attribute of the segmentation.

Analysis of Staple Food Price Behaviour: Multivariate BEKK-GARCH Model

  • This study examines the behaviour of staple food price using Multivariate BEKK-GARCH Model. Understanding of staple food price behaviour is important for determining the unpredictability of staple food market and also for policy making. In this paper, we focus on the commodity prices of sugar, rice, soybean and wheat to examine the volatility behaviour of those commodities. The empirical results show that the own-volatility spillover are relatively significant for all food prices. The own-volatility spillover effect for sugar price is relatively large compared with the volatility spillover of other staple food commodities. The findings also highlight that the price volatility of wheat increases during food crisis more than it does when the condition is stable. Also, the own-volatility of rice and wheat in the period of the food crisis is significant and higher compared to the period before food crisis indicates that the past own-volatility effects during food crisis are relatively more difficult to predict because of the uncertainty and high price volatility. Policy recommendations that can be proposed based on the findings are: (1) a better trade agreement in food commodity trade, (2) lower the dependence on wheat importation in Indonesia, and (3) reliable system to minimize food price volatility risks.

Estimating the economic value of agricultural water using the virtual water concept

  • Water is an essential resource for human survival. According to the OECD Environmental Outlook to 2050, rapid industrialization and a global population increase by approximately two billion will likely increase global water use by 55% in 2050. However, water depletion has been getting worse than before and has been happening more quickly, as Earth's water resources are limited. The present study proposes water management measures by using the virtual water theory which enables water consumption measurement and the confirmation and recognition of water scarcity problems, and will support the development of counter-measures. As a method for estimating the value of agricultural water, virtual water theory was used to calculate the amount of agricultural water input for domestic rice and to apply prices of agricultural water in the United States and China to Korean water prices. When the Chinese price was applied to Korean water prices, the value of agricultural water represented 0.3% of the Korean rice producer's price. When the US price was applied to Korean water prices, the value of agricultural water represented 1.6% of the domestic rice producer's price. The study exposes the percentage of the value of agricultural water in agricultural product prices, as well as how this scare resource may affect future prices. In the future, if there are water charges to effectively manage agricultural water, this study, which uses the virtual water theory, can be used as a preliminary research.

Production Strategy of Rice under WTO System -Farming Size Expansion Policy- (WTO 체제하의 쌀 생산전략 -영농규모화사업을 중심으로-)

  • In recent years, domestic market environment of rice production is confronted with the problems of excessive production and decrease in per capita consumption, resulting in steady decline of domestic rice price. Moreover, as new trade negotiations of WTO or FTA are being forwarded, cheap price of imported rice will also make the rice production environment being worse off. One of the possible production strategies to relieve this situation could be expanding farm size, which increases market competitiveness in terms of cost-saving. Since 1990's, one of the main agricultural policies for rice production in Korea has been expanding farm size. This study aims at 1)exploring brief history of Korean government's agricultural policy for expanding farm size, 2)examining economic effect of farming size expansion, and 3)discussing major role of government to promote appropriate programs for rice-farming and producers. Main conclusion suggests that appropriate farming size should be expanded upto at least five hectares per farm, with producers' effort to reduce farming costs and continuous investments on agricultural infrastructures including irrigation systems, etc. Continuous government's investment on operation and maintenance on water facility is also one of the important factors in expanding farm size.

The Impact of Indigenous People's Pre-existing Information on Rice Farming: Findings from Laos

  • Dissemination of information can enhance smallholder farmers' agricultural outcomes and incomes in developing countries. However, the impact evaluation for new information can be inaccurate without considering pre-existing information that the indigenous people have used. This study explores qualitative causal links between existing agricultural information used by Lao smallholder farmers on rice yield and selling price with 180 household data. We categorized the pre-existing information into weather, farming technique, input, intermediate trader, and sales price. The source of each piece of information is used as an instrumental variable to overcome the endogeneity issue between information use and agricultural outcomes. Using farming technique information positively affects rice yields by 57.1% compared to those without that information. Moreover, intermediate trader and crop sales information result in 64.5% and 60.0% higher selling prices than non-user groups. A statistically significant causal relationship exists with agricultural outcomes. The more genuine impact should be measured with a newly updated impact evaluation approach that considers this pre-existing agricultural information.

  • Even though the price level of organic rice is 20% higher than conventional product, 25% of the total surveyed consumers are willing to purchse organic rice of different income level, the monthly average income was 1, 100, 000Won. 35% of the total consumers in this income class is willing to purchase organic rice.

Estimating Demand Functions of Tractor, Combine and Rice Transplanter (트랙터, 콤바인, 이앙기의 수요 함수 추정)

  • Using a multi-variable linear regression technique and SUR(seemingly unrelated regression) model, the demand functions of tractor, combine and rice transplanter were estimated. The demand was regarded as an annual supply of each machine and modeled as a function of 11 independent variables which reflect the actual farmer's income, actual prices of farm machines, previous supply, previous stock, actual amount of available subsidy, actual amount of available loan, arable land, import of farm machines and rice price. The actual amount of available loan affects most significantly the demand functions. The actual farmer's income, actual farmer's asset, loan coverage, and rice price affect the demand positively while prices of farm machines and import negatively. The annual demands of tractor, combine and rice transplanter estimated using the demand functions were also presented over the next 4 years.

Development of One-Pass Rice Whitener with Cutting Blades of Hard Metal (초경날식 절삭형 완패스정미기의 개발)

  • A one-pass rice whitener with hard metal blades was developed to solve the problems of the existing one-pass rice whitener. The developed one-pass rice whitener was tested and improved through various milling experiments. It showed high performance such as the capacity of 3.5 t/h, the energy consumption of $1.0 kWh/100kg$, milled rice recovery of 91.6%, broken rice rate of 2.2%, the crack rate of 1.9% at the 750 rpm of the roller shaft, compared with those other domestic and foreign one-pass rice whiteners. Especially, it could whiten broun rice of high moisture (16~l7%) with water sprayed at low internal pressure of less than $0.2 kg/cm^2$ and low temperature due to the characteristics of the cutting part composed of 24 hard metal blades. The developed one-pass rice whitener was industrilized and distributed to some rice processing complexs in one fourth price compared with that of imported one-pass rice whiteners.

Predicting Net Income for Cultivation Plan Consultation

  • The net income per unit area from crop production could be the most critical consideration for agricultural producers during cultivation planning. This paper proposes a scheme for predicting the net income per unit area based on machine learning and related calculations. This scheme predicts rice production and operation costs by applying climate and price index data. The rice price is also predicted by applying rice production and operation cost data. Finally, these predicted results are employed to calculate the predicted net income, which is compared with the actual net income. Consequently, the proposed scheme shows a meaningful degree of conformity, which indicates the potential of machine learning for predicting various aspects of agricultural production.

Prospect and Production Technology of Brand Rice (브랜드 쌀의 생산기술과 전망)

  • In recent years, Korean rice must compete with the rice of advanced countries under Doha Development Agenda(DDA) and free Trade Agreement(FTA). Therefore we should find more active and positive solution in rice industry according to the inncreasing power of international pressure. Increasing rice production was the most important policy during the past food-deficient days, but recently, with overproduction of rice, various circulation system by the brand(price)-differentiation should be settled in a recent market of Korea. Nowadays, some advanced rice farmers and Rice Processing Complex(RPC) managers developed new brands of rice with high-quality, adding healthy materials and environment-friendly farming methods. Therefore, the future strategy of making a new brand rice should be planned including selection of rice variety, cultural and post-harvest techniques, circulation and processing methods to compete against foreign rice. And environment-friendly farming is also recommendable for food safety and differentiate from imported rice. For the purpose of successful brand-rice, the following points might be considered. Firstly, selection of good quality rice and continual development of good variety must be conducted for the differentiation of Korean rice from foreign rice. Secondly, a special contract between producer and consumer with functional-rice, organic filming-rice, specific-rice will be recommendable. Thirdly, improvement of post-harvest management and milling system are necessary for the production of differentiated-rice. Fortunately, standard of inspection, rules of description for brand-rice must be developed by a more scientific examination in order to settlement of trust for consumer. Finally, provincial or regional-representative brand rice must be settled and conducted for the development of agreement market system between producer and consumer.
