Numerical Analysis Study for Optimal Design Method on Intersection between Longitudinal and Transversal Rib in Orthotropic Steel Deck Bridge (강바닥판교의 종리브-횡리브 교차연결 상세변화에 따른 최적설계방안의 수치해석 연구)

  • The use of the othotropic steel deck is steadily increased due to the advance of the technology in the steel bridges which recently have been longer. But the othotropic steel deck bridge is the structure that is very fragile to the fatigue, especially, the fatigue crack at the cross of the longitudinal rib and transversal rib is one of the biggest problems that othotropic steel deck bridges have. The causes of these fatigue cracks come from the secondary stress on out-plane behavior of transversal rib. In this study, we conducted the experiment to find the optimal details to improve fatigue strength on intersection between longitudinal rib and transversal rib in the othotropic steel deck bridge through numerical analysis using the experiment of the fatigue in the 3-dimensional real structure and program LUSAS. As a result of study, it is showed that the details of the korean standard section attached with a curved bulkhead plate is the most profitable. And, it is indicated that the stress which is generated when the reform improved section by parametic study can be reduced by about 50% at most or more. Along with the reduced stress and the longer interval between transversal ribs(G=400), the decreased steel amount by 4% and the shortened welding length by 34% make it possible to produce the othotropic steel deck bridge which is strong against fatigue.

  • Experimental and numerical studies were carried out in order to investigate the processability and the transcriptability of the injection molding of micro structures. For this purpose, we designed a mold insert having micro rib patterns on a relatively thick base part. Mold insert has a base of 2mm thickness, and has nine micro ribs on that base plate. Width and height of the rib are $300{\mu}m\;and\;1200{\mu}m$, respectively. We found a phenomenon similar to 'race tracking', due to 'hesitation' in the micro ribs. As the melt flows, it starts to cool down and melt front located in the ribs near the gate cannot penetrate further because the flow resistance is large in that almost frozen portion. When the base is totally filled, the melt front away from the gate is not frozen yet. Therefore, it flows back to the gate direction through the ribs. Consequently, transcriptability of the rib far from the gate is better. We also verified this phenomenon via numerical simulation. We further investigated the effects of processing conditions, such as flow rate, packing time, packing pressure, wall temperature and melt temperature, on the transcriptability. The most dominant factor that affects the flow pattern and the transcriptability of the micro rib is flow rate. High flow rate and high melt temperature enhance the transcriptability of micro rib structure. High packing time and high packing pressure result in insignificant dimensional variations of the rib. Numerical simulation also confirms that low flow rate causes a short shot of micro ribs and high wall temperature helps the filling of the micro ribs.

Image Noise Reduction Using Structural Mode Shaping for Scanning Electron Microscopy

  • In a scanning electron microscope (SEM), outside acoustic noise causes image noise that distorts observations of the specimen being examined. A SEM that is less sensitive to acoustic noise is highly desirable. This paper investigates the image noise problem by addressing the mode shapes of the base plate and the transmission path of the acoustic noise and vibration. By arranging the position of the rib, a new SEM base plate was developed that had twisting as the 1st and 2nd modes. In those two twisting modes, vibration nodes existed near the center of the base plate where the specimen chamber is placed. Less vibration was transmitted to the chamber and to the specimen by the twisting modes compared to bending ones, which are the 2nd and 3rd modes for a rectangular plain base plate. An SEM with the developed base plate installed exhibited a significant reduction of image noise when exposed to acoustic noises below 250 Hz.

Clinical characteristics of patients with the hardware failure after surgical stabilization of rib fractures in Korea: a case series

  • Purpose: Surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) is widely used in patients with flail chests, and several studies have reported the efficacy of SSRF even in multiple rib fractures. However, few reports have discussed the hardware failure (HF) of implanted plates. We aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of patients with HF after SSRF and further investigate the related factors. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the electronic medical records of patients who underwent SSRF for multiple rib fractures at a level I trauma center in Korea between January 2014 and January 2021. We defined HF as the unintentional loosening of screws, dislocation, or breakage of the implanted plates. The baseline characteristics, surgical outcomes, and types of HF were assessed. Results: During the study period, 728 patients underwent SSRF, of whom 80 (10.9%) were diagnosed with HF. The mean age of HF patients was 56.5±13.6 years, and 66 (82.5%) were men. There were 59 cases (73.8%) of screw loosening, 21 (26.3%) of plate breakage, 17 (21.3%) of screw migration, and seven (8.8%) of plate dislocation. Nine patients (11.3%) experienced wound infection, and 35 patients (43.8%) experienced chronic pain. A total of 21 patients (26.3%) underwent reoperation for plate removal. The patients in the reoperation group were significantly younger, had fewer fractures and plates, underwent costal fixation, and had a longer follow-up. There were no significant differences in subjective chest symptoms or lung capacity. Conclusions: HF after SSRF occurred in 10.9% of the cases, and screw loosening was the most common. Further longitudinal studies are needed to identify risk factors for SSRF failure.

  • The growth of lean from nine wholesale cuts in relation to the total lean weight in carcass side were evaluated with three allometric equations for 18 Najdi male camels slaughtered at 8, 16 and 26 months of age. The allometric growth coefficients indicated that as the camels grew, weights of lean form brisket and flank cuts increased relatively more rapidly than the total lean in carcass side (${\beta}$ >1.1) and that weights of lean from wholesale shoulder and rump cuts increased relatively less rapidly (${\beta}$ <.9) than the total lean weight from carcass side. The growth coefficients for the lean in the thoracic limb and pelvic limb showed a dorsoventral rise in the growth impetus, with coefficients for the thoracic limb correspondingly higher than those of pelvic limb. The growth coefficients for the lean from shoulder, rib, flank and leg cuts increased (p<.01) with increased weight of total lean in carcass side, whereas it decreased with increased total lean weight in carcass side for the lean in neck, brisket, plate, loin and rump cuts. At a constant weight of total lean in carcass side, older camels had larger coefficients for lean in neck, brisket, rump, flank and leg cuts, but had smaller coefficients for lean in shoulder, rib, plate and loin cuts.

  • It is almost impossible to evaluate the ultimate strength theoretically, because the behavior of Gusset-Tube connection stiffened with rib-plate is considerably complicate. Therefore in this study a finite element model of gusset-tube connection stiffened with rib-plate was established. The validity of finite element analysis was examined through comparing with previous experimental result and the behavior and strength of the connection was examined. From the parametric study considering lateral force ratio, eccentricity, gusset length based on finite element model, the stiffened effect was estimated and stiffening method was proposed.

These structural elements is very complex the structure and direction of load delivered from socket specially calbe particularly be different, and need FEM analysis that use Thick Shell element for suitable arrangement of mutual stress flowing grasping and absence that follow hereupon because all of the each support plate angle that suport this differ.

  • It has long been recognized that the H-beam steel rib has many shortcomings when used as a steel support in tunneling. One of the major shortcomings is the shotcrete shadow created behind H-beam flange which eventually reduces the load bearing capacity of shotcrete shell. In many European countries, plate girder as the H-beam steel rib has been replaced by lattice girder which has many advantages over the H-beam steel rib. Successful application of the lattice girder as a steel support requires a thorough investigation on the load bearing capacity of the lattice girder. Therefore, laboratory bending and compression tests were conducted on lattice girders with the aim of investigating the load bearing capacity of the lattice girders. The results of tests show that the load bearing capacity of laIn twice girders is higher than that of H-beams, which indicates that the lattice girder can be effectively used as a support in tunneling.
