This study was conducted to provide basic data for productivity of Saururus chinensis Baill. depending on rhizome size. The kinds of the treatment were 4 including below 5mm of rhizome size. Major results were summarized as follows. Sprouting was earlier in above 9mm of rhizome size and the number of last sprouting was increased $84{\sim}109%$ compared with 8.0 $individual/m^2$ of 6mm of rhizome size. Growth of stem showed a good tendency in 6mm of rhizome size with the longer stem length and the thicker stem but the number of tiller was more rhizome was more thicker. Though the number of commercial leaf was more above 9mm of rhizome size leaf length, leaf width and the number of noncommercial leaf did not showed difference by rhizome size. Dry weight of commercial foliar in 9mm of rhizome size over was increased $35{\sim}37%$ compared with 6mm of rhizome size. Therefore, rhizomes size above 9mm showed most effective for increasing sprout and wight of stem and leaves of Saururus chinensis.
The experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of rhizome size and mulching materials on some agronomic characters and flower-head yield of Gingiber mioga ROSCOE. The larger the size of rhizome was, the more the number of leaves developed, and the higher the yield was. The most suitable rhizome size for planting was found to be from I2cm to 15cm. Rice straw and polyethylene film mulching materials increased the soil porosity and reduced change of the soil moisture content. The yield of flower-head was highest in the straw-mulching plot, indicating that straw would be the best mulching material for growth and yield of flower-head in Gingiber mioga ROSCE.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the influence of rhizome size and planting space on some agronomic characters and rhizome yield of ginger in greenhouse cultivation. The average air temperature was 9$^{\circ}C$ higher in greenhouse cultivation than in field. The average soil temperature also was 2-4$^{\circ}C$ higher in greenhouse. Plant height, leaf area, stem number and rhizome yield were significantly increased when cultivated at greenhouse compared to field. Under greenhouse the yield of rhizome in 30$\times$30cm planting space were appeared to be increase 121-183% compared with field cultivation. At the planting space of 60$\times$30cm, harvests were increased 76-82% comparing field cultivation. The most suitable rhizome size for planting at 30$\times$30cm planting space found to be 40g in greenhouse cultivation.
This experiment was investigated to effect of divided rhizome size and medium type on survival rate and growth of wasabi for 60 days in controlled growth room. In divided rhizome size of 5mm above, survival rate was 100% and their growth (plant height of 12cm and leaf number of 3${\sim}$4 per plant) was good at 30 days after wrapped-sphagnum treatment. Plant height was 20cm above and number of leaves increased in 1-2 per plant at 60 days after treatment. Survival rate and growth didn't show any effect on plant regulator of root-tone. In inorganic media (saprolite and aerated light stone) treatment, survival rate of wasabi in divided size of 5${\sim}$10mm showed 83% or above at 30 days in deep flow culture. Growth did not show significant difference of inorganic support media treatments. Therefore, it is possible for divided rhizome size of 5mm above to do production of seedlings by acclimatize for 30 days in hydroponics under controlled growth chamber.
Growth hadit and demograph in a mature population of polygonatum and polygonatum humile in kanghwa island were studied for two growing seasons. Shoots of two species emerged early spring from the growing apices of the underdground rhizomes which had persisted for up to 1~5 year.after flowering, the ramets produced two rhizome buds at the shoot base. Bacause of the apical dominance in the rhizome system, a new rhizome was developed from only one bud, an actual bud,and the other latent buds were suppressed sothat remained dormant. The latent dud produced a new rhizome only when the actual dud was severed by the herbivores or by the physical obstacles. Therefore, the ramet number is not increased by the new rhizome from the latent bud. however, new ramets dould sometimes grow from latent buds which had been produced more than a year ago. Production of these ramets was main means increasing the ramet numbew and widening the potential zone of exploitation. Changes in size class of each ramet were noyiceable after a tear in small size-classes. Small ramets replaced themselves with larger-sized ramet, while large ramets with similar-sized or smallar-sized ramets. ramet numbers were average 0.82and 1.14 times of those fromthe previous year inp. involucratum and p. humile, though there was between-site variation. Almost all the ramets in the quadrats were alive during the growing season. when the entire rhizome systems were excavater next spring, there were many rhizomesegments without shoots, especially in p. involucratum. therefore, the drcrease of ramet number in p. involucratum in probably due to the climatic factors of winter.
A natural, tidal-flat clone of Zoysia sinica was studied to compare ramet growth properties in central area with in peripheral area. In new stolon and rhizome, internode length, weight, shoot height and weight, and spike production were monitored on July 25, 2004. The weight/height rate of shoot between stolon and rhizome, the shoot/stolon (or rhizome) rate in weight between central and peripheral area were not different. However, other properties differed in stolon from rhizome or between central and peripheral area significantly differed: 1. The rhizome in central area had a larger node number, shorter internode length, higher shoot height, larger shoot biomass, and higher rate of non-shoot nodes than that in peripheral area. 2. The stolon in central area had a smaller node number, shorter internode length, and smaller biomass than that in peripheral area. 3. In the same area, the rhizome had a larger node number (except for central area), shorter internode, higher shoot height, larger shoot biomass, higher rate of non-shoot node, and higher rate of node having over two shoots than the stolon. No relationship could be found between shoot size and spike production in shoot on vertical rhizome (lower node of old shoot).
This study was investigated to find out the optimum rhizome size of ginger characteristics and yield at two planting densities. Seventy five gram of rhizome gave best performance for plant height and yield with comparison with the other sizes at two planting densities. Among 25g, 50g and 75g of ginger rhizome size were not significantly different in plant height and yield at $30{\times}30cm$ planting density. But, 25g of rhizome size is economically recommended at $30{\times}30cm$ planting densities.
The clarify the ecological properties, and to predict change of understory vegetation of mt. Nam Park, population dynamics and interspecific competition of D. smilacinum and D. viridescens, which grow in understory of deciduous broad-leaved forest and pseudo-annuals, were studied from May 20 to May 30 1998. The depth of litter layer, soil moisture content, soil organic matter and soil texture were surveyed in 18 populations (15 D. smilacinum populations and 3 D. viridescens populations). Mean litter layer of d. smilacimum population was thinner than that of D. viridescens populations). Mean litter layer of D. smilacnum population was thinner than that of D. viridescens population. The contents of soil moisture and organic matter of D. smilacinum population were lower than that of D. viridescens population. The D. smilacinum growed in broad range of soil texture but D. viridescens in loamy soil. Because D. smilacinum could tolerate more broad range of soil moisture and soil texture than D. viridescens, the former covered the herb layer in earlier stage and the latter introduced in later stage when rhizome could grow easily. The numbers of individual in two marginal parts were smaller than that in center in same D. smilacinum patch. And the total numbers of individuals grown in (10 ${\times}$ 10)cm were from 0 to 12. The rhizome (subterranean runner) weight, rhizome length, root weight, shoot weight, lea weight and leaf number per subquadrat (cell) increased along the number of individual, that is, increased from marginal part to center. But rhizome weight and rhizome length per individual were vice versa. Therefore, the individuals in marginal part reproduced longer and stronger asexual propagules than that in center. The distribution pattern of D. smilacinum was contageous and that of D. viridescens was random or regular. Therefore, population growth of former was independent on density and that of latter was dependent on density. The distributions of size-class showed normal curves in two population, but the curves based on data of total dry weight showed positive skewness and those of leaf number showed negative skewness The correlation coefficient (CC) values between the properties of each organ were high in two population and significant at 0.1% level. The CC values of D. viridescens were higher of the two. Therefore, the former allocated the energy to each organ stable. The rhizome depth of d. viridescens was 2 times deeper than that of D. smilacinum. And rhizome length and weight of D. viridescens were longer (2 times) or heavier (4 times) than those of D. smilacinum. The patch size of D. viridescens increased 60 cm per year and that of D. smilacinum 30 cm. On this results, the intrinsic increase velocity of d. viridescens patch was 2 times faster than that of d. smilacinum, therefore, on the competition, the former had an advantage over D. smilacinum. The reason why d. viridescens defeated D. smilacinum resulted from that the leaf area of former was 4 times broader than that of latter. in Mt. Nam Park, it was thought that two disporum Population would change with the 3 thpes of environmental change as followings. First, no human impact and increase of soil moisture content resulted in increase of D. viridescens population. Second, mild human impact and similar condition of soil moisture content resulted in slow increase or no changes of D. smilacinum and d. viridescens population. Third, severe human impact and dry condition resulted in decrease or vanishment of two disporum populations.
This study was conducted to examine the difference in yield and size of enlarged rhizome according to the kinds of native white lotuses. Four white lotuses (Nelumbo nucifera) were collected from 4 different sites, Jeonbuk Jeonju ('Garam'), Jeonnam Muan ('Hoesan'), Chungnam Buyeo ('Ihnchuisa'), and Chungnam Cheongyang('Cheongyang'). Each enlarged rhizome was planted in an area of 3.3 $m^2$ on 10. April, 2007 and digged out on 19. February, 2008. The yield of enlarged rhizome was in the order of Hoesan (3.0 kg/$m^2$), Cheongyang (2.5 kg/$m^2$), Garam (2.0 kg/$m^2$) and Ihnchuisa (1.0 kg/$m^2$). The number of enlarged rhizomes was in the order of Ihnchuisa (4.9/$m^2$), Garam (4.3/$m^2$), Hoesan (4.2/$m^2$) and Cheongyang (4.1/$m^2$). Total number of nodes in the enlarged rhizomes were much more in the order of Hoesan (17.0/$m^2$), Ihnchuisa (16.0/$m^2$), Cheongyang (15.3/$m^2$) and Garam (14.1/$m^2$). Component ratio of enlarged rhizome length below 50cm for Ihnchuisa, Garam, Hoesan and Cheongyang were 76.3%, 53.0%, 38.2% and 40.3% respectively. Native white lotus had a longer enlarged rhizome in the first node than the other nodes, and their enlarged rhizome length and width became thin. And it became thick and short from the second node of enlarged rhizome. Accordingly the amount of enlarged rhizomes 'Hoesan' was extremely much than others.
This study was conducted to select the optimum cultivar of wasabi in water condition. In three cultivar, Daruma, Simanesarai and Daihoichigo, the Daruma was superior to the others. Though total rhizome weight was similar to Daruma and Daihoichigo, rhizome of main stem of Daruma was bigger than that of Daihoichigo, specially distribute in $80{\sim}159g$ size. The allylisothiocyanate content was higher in rhizome than that of leaf, lateral rhizome and petiole. In three cultivar, the allylisothiocyanate content of rhizome, Daihoichigo, Daruma and Simanesairai was 0.3389, 0.6332, 0.3956(mg/g), respectively.
