A Case of Ocular Toxocariasis Successfully Treated with Albendazole and Triamcinolon

  • We present a case of ocular toxocariasis treated successfully with oral albendazole in combination with steroids. A 26-year-old male visited the authors' clinic with the chief complaint of flying flies in his right eye. The fundus photograph showed a whitish epiretinal scar, and the fluorescein angiography revealed a hypofluorescein lesion of the scar and late leakage at the margin. An elevated retinal surface and posterior acoustic shadowing of the scar were observed in the optical coherence tomography, and Toxocara IgG was positive. The patient was diagnosed with toxocariasis, and the condition was treated with albendazole (400 mg twice a day) for a month and oral triamcinolone (16 mg for 2 weeks, once a day, and then 8 mg for 1 week, once a day) from day 13 of the albendazole treatment. The lesions decreased after the treatment. Based on this study, oral albendazole combined with steroids can be a simple and effective regimen for treating ocular toxocariasis.

형광 안저 사진의 기하 왜곡 교정 (Geometric distortion correction of fluorescein ocular fundus photographs)

  • 형광 안저 사진은 형광 물질을 정맥에 주사한 후 안저를 연속 촬영한 것으로 이로부터 망막 및 맥락막의 혈관 상태를 관찰하여 안과계 질환 뿐만아니라, 당뇨병, 고혈압 등 내과계 질병도 진단한다. 순차적으로 안저 사진을 촬영할 때 안구의 불규칙적인 운동으로 인하여 프레임마다 특정 영역의 위치가 달라질 수 있으며, 조명 상태의 변동에 의해 프레임마다 배경 명암이 달라질 수 있다. 이러한 형광 안저 사진에서 프레임간 변화분을 검출하기 위해 직접 두 프레임을 빼는 것은 부적합하다. 본 논문에서는 형광 안저 사진의 프레임간 변화분을 정확하게 검출할 수 있도록 형광안저 사진의 기하 왜곡을 교정하는 방법을 제안한다. 먼저 안저 사진으로부터 혈관을 검출하고 이를 세선화하여 제어점의 좌표를 정한다. 제어점을 이용하여 기하 변환함수를 구하고 각 프레임을 맵핑하므로써 기하 왜곡을 교정한다. 기하 왜곡을 교정한 두 프레임을 화소별로 빼어 차영상을 구한 결과 프레임간 변화를 정확하게 검출할 수 있었다.

Chemical Coupling between Horizontal Cells in the Catfish Retina

  • The effects of GABA and glutamate on the horizontal cells were explored by an intracellular recording method to discern the mechanisms of receptive field formation by chemical coupling in the catfish outer retina. The results suggest that the horizontal cells of the catfish retina might use GABA as their transmitters and that the GABAergic system contributes to the formation of receptive fields of the horizontal cells. GABAC receptors may be involved in a chemical coupling between horizontal cells and concerned with the depolarizing actions by GABA on horizontal cells in the catfish retina. Since the chloride equilibrium potential is more positive than the dark membrane potential in horizontal cells, GABA released from a horizontal cell may depolarize the neighboring horizontal cells. Thus a chemical coupling between horizontal cells may be formed. $GABA_A$ receptors also may be involved in the negative feedback mechanism between photoreceptor and horizontal cell. And glutamate may be involved in connecting positive and negative feedback systems since it potentiated the GABA's actions. Therefore, it is presumed that large receptive fields in the catfish retina are formed not only by electrical coupling but also by chemical coupling between horizontal cells. And information travels laterally by pathways involving both electrical coupling composed of gap junctions and chemical coupling in the retinal network.

인워적 원시에 따른 망막에서 착란원 크기 (Diameter of the retinal blur circle in a artificial hypermetropia)

  • 인위적 원시상태에서 조절작용이 포함된 가운데 시험렌즈 굴절력 변화에 따라 망막에서 만들어지는 착락원을 조사하였다. 간단한 인위적 원시 모델을 만들어 시험렌즈의 굴절력을 함수로 수정체의 조절력에 따른 상측초점거리를 계산하였으며, 또한 출사동에서 망막사이의 거리를 조절력의 함수로 계산하였다. 이 두 결과를 비교함으로서 망막에서 만들어지는 착란원의 크기를 나타낼 수 있었다.

Nutritional Components and Safety of Purified Pufferfish (Lagocephalus gloveri) Liver Oil

  • The safety of pufferfish (Lagocephalus gloveri) liver oil and the contents of some nutritional components were examined to obtain important information on their use as high valued functional foods. Pufferfish liver oil was extracted by the hot-water method using $1\%$ NaOH solution to remove toxic compounds, and then purified using a general purifying method of fish oil. Any extraordinary clinical symptoms were not observed from all groups administrated with pufferfish liver oil throughout the test period. None of the rats died when administrated the highest concentration of 10 mL/kg of the pufferfish liver oil. Vitamin A content was 114.2 ppm, as a retinal equivalent in the oil extracted using hot-water, but the content was higher (169.3 ppm) in oil extracted using n-hexane. Vitamin D and E were not detected in ppm in oil extracted using hot-water. Vitamin D in the pufferfish liver oil extracted using n-hexane was also undetected, but vitamin E was at 32.5 ppm. Among the 18 minerals detected, the sodium content was the highest at 253.5 ppm, followed by 13.9 ppm ofpotassium, 1.5 ppm of calcium, 0.2 ppm of magnesium, and other trace minerals. The contents of EPA and DHA were $0.8\%\;and\;14.8\%$, respectively, in the pufferfish liver oil extracted using hot-water. Considering these results, there is potential that pufferfish liver oil could be used as a functional food.

농약 노출과 건강 (Pesticide Exposure and Health)

  • Although pesticides have increased crop production and controlled disease, they have produced a number of adverse health effects. Pesticides have potential human toxicity and a variety of groups, such as farmers or industrial workers, as well as the general population, are exposed to pesticides. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to provide an overview of pesticide exposure and health through a literature review, focusing on exposure assessment, acute poisoning, chronic health effects, and future research needs. The exposure types and levels of pesticides vary by study subjects and need to be assessed by integrating several methods focused on the epidemiological purpose. Acute pesticide poisoning is a major public health problem in the world. Paraquat is the main causative pesticide for acute poisoning in Korea and should be banned in order to save several thousands of lives every year. Occupational pesticide exposure also causes numerous chronic diseases among farmers and industrial workers, including cancers, respiratory diseases, depression, retinal degeneration, diabetes, and abnormal menstrual cycle. However, controversy exists regarding the long-term effects of low-dose environmental pesticide exposure. The area of pesticide study is relatively new with broad study populations and it has received little academic and policy attention, particularly in Korea. More detailed studies investigating the risk of pesticide-related health effects and intervention efforts to reduce the problems are needed in Korea.

살충제 카바릴이 아프리카발톱개구리의 발생에 미치는 독성영향 (The Toxic Effects of a Pesticide Carbaryl on the Development of African Clawed Frog, Xenopus laevis)

  • We investigated the toxic effects of carbaryl on early embryo development in the African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis. To test the toxic effects, frog embryo teratogenesis assays using Xenopus were performed. Embryos were exposed to various concentrations of carbaryl ($5{\sim}320\;{\mu}M$). $LC_{100}$ for carbaryl was $320\;{\mu}M$, and the $LC_{50}$ determined by probit analysis was the concentration of $235.68\;{\mu}M$. Exposure to $160\;{\mu}M$ of carbaryl resulted in 10 different types of severe external malformations. Histological examination revealed dysplasia of the eyes, heart, guts, somatic muscle, dorsal, liver, blood vessel and swelling of the pronephric ducts. Malformation of neural tissue and brain was not severe even in the high dose of carbaryl. Benzidine blood stain showed distinct inhibition of inducing erythrocytes in embryos and animal cap explants. Electron micrographs of embryo revealed retinal detachment, loose photoreceptor lamella and the degeneration of sarcomeres in the carbaryl-treated group. The mitochondrial degeneration was also observed in the test group.

Increased 26S proteasome non-ATPase regulatory subunit 1 in the aqueous humor of patients with age-related macular degeneration

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the world. Evidence indicates that the suppression of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) contributes to the accumulation of toxic proteins and inflammation in retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), the functional abnormalities and/or the degeneration of which are believed to be the initiators and major pathologies of AMD. To identify new protein associations with the altered UPS in AMD, we used LC-ESI-MS/MS to perform a proteomic analysis of the aqueous humor (AH) of AMD patients and matched control subjects. Six UPS-related proteins were present in the AH of the patients and control subjects. Four of the proteins, including 26S proteasome non-ATPase regulatory subunit 1 (Rpn2), were increased in patients, according to semi-quantitative proteomic profiling. An LC-MRM assay revealed a significant increase of Rpn2 in 15 AMD patients compared to the control subjects, suggesting that this protein could be a biomarker for AMD.

Sulodexide inhibits retinal neovascularization in a mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy

  • Sulodexide is a mixed glycosaminoglycan composed of heparin and dermatan sulfate. In this study, the anti-angiogenic effect of sulodexide was investigated using an oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) mouse model. The retinas of sham-injected OIR mice (P17) had a distinctive central area of nonperfusion, and this area was significantly decreased in sulodexide-injected mice. The number of neovascular tufts measured by SWIFT_NV and mean neovascular lumen number were significantly decreased in sulodexide-injected mice. Hyperbaric oxygen exposure resulted in increased levels of VEGF, MMP-2 and MMP-9, and when mice were treated with sulodexide, a dose-dependent reduction in VEGF, MMP-2 and MMP-9 levels was observed. Our results clearly demonstrate the anti-angiogenic effect of sulodexide and highlight sulodexide as a candidate supplementary substance to be used for the treatment of ocular pathologies that involve neovascularization.

Clinical, ophthalmological, and pathological findings of hypovitaminosis A in cattle

  • From February to September in 1996, a lot of blind cattle were reported in Dangjin Area of Chungnam Province. Blindness were observed in the 143 calves of the 1,496 calves from 79 farms. Blind cattle were found only in the farms where green pasture was not fed. After administration of vitamin A as the type of feed additives and parenteral injection, the blindness cases were not occurred in those farms. Both pupils were totally dilated with the absence of pupillary light reflex in all blind cattle. In the ophthalmoscopic examination, the fundus revealed multi focal linear white mottling which was more severe in nontapetal fundus than tapetal fundus. Serum vitamin A concentration was as low as 4.1 ,$\mu\textrm{g}$/dl in the calves of the affected farms. Narrowing of optic foramen, retinal degeneration and optic disc atrophy were shown in pathological findings.
