  • Biodiesel fuel(BDF) which is easily produced from vegetable oils such as soybean oil and rice bran oil can be effectively used as an alternative fuel in diesel engine. However, BDF can affect the performance and emissions in diesel engine because it has different chemical and physical properties from diesel fuel. To investigate the effects of injection timing on the characteristics of performance and emissions with BDF in IDI diesel engine, BDF derived from rice bran oil was considered in this study. The engine was operated at six different injection timings and six loads at a single engine speed of 2000rpm. When the injection timing was retarded, better results were obtained, which may confirm the advantage of BDF. The reduction of NOx and smoke was observed for a 2$^{\circ}$ retarded injection timing without any sacrifice of BSEC.

  • In this paper, a method deciding the permissible gains of the P and PT controllers for a retarded process under stable condition is proposed. For analysis, the controlled process is assumed to be first-order system with time delay. At first, the adjustable parameter sets causing stability limit are obtained based on the frequency domain condition which makes the roots of the characteristic equation locate on the imaginary axis. And the cut-in frequency ${\omega}_p$ to bring the parameter set to P control from PI control is derived is derived in terms of L and $T_m$ then ${\omega}_p$ is used to compute the maximum gain with stable condition. The results indicate that the permissible controller gains can be described by a unique if parameters L and $T_m$ are know.

  • This study is for examining the differences of perceived stresses and family strengths between the parents according to socio-demographic backgrounds(age, educational level, income and the degree of disorder) of the parents having mentally retarded children. The results were as follows. First, in the overall perceived stress level, there was no difference between fathers and mothers, but when compared in stress areas, fathers experience more distresses in general interpersonal areas than mothers. Fathers also shows differences according to the degrees of their income and their perception about disorder compared with mothers showing differences according to the degree of income. Second, there were no differences in family strengths perceived by both fathers and mothers, but were significant differences according to the level of education and income. Another words, higher the education and income level, higher is their family strengths level. Third, there were positive correlations between the perceived stresses and family strengths, and significant differences in family strengths according to the stress level(higher/lower part of the group). In other words, when the perceived stress level is high, the level of perceived family strengths is low.

  • Many approximate models for interaction between a flexible structure and an infinite external acoustic medium have been developed for a long time. Among them, Doubly Asymptotic Approximations (DAAs) are very well known approximations. But, it has shortcomings in intermediate frequency range and can't fully describe the acoustic medium. So, this paper presents the modified approximation by applying the retarded and advanced potentials to Kirchhoff's formula. It describes the external acoustic medium more in detail and shows a good result in early time transient responses when it was applied to a spherical shell. Through a spherical shell interacting with external acoustic medium, the transient responses for the proposed model is compared to Huang's exact solution and DAA2.

  • In order to investigate low frequency swishing noise of wind turbines, singularity in circular motion with large radius is introduced as a noise source model. By employing Lowson's acoustic analogy, simple exact solution is obtained. The solution shows that time histories of acoustic pressure at receiver points varied significantly according to receiver's directional location, even when the retarded time distributions are similar. However, the corresponding spectra of sound pressure for the receiver locations where the retarded time distributions are almost the same are not significantly different. It can be inferred from these results that the time-averaged sound pressure spectra which cannot take into account the detailed difference in the time-variation of wind turbine noise may not represent the sound quality of wind turbines due to its swishing.

  • Furosemide retard tablets were prepared using hydroxyethylcellulose(HEC) as a matrix material. Dissolution of furosemide from this tablet was retarded significantly comparing with conventional tablets and greatly dependent on HEC concentration and pH of the dissolution medium. The mechanism of retarded release was supposed to be due to HEC gel formation and drug diffusion through the gel matrix.

  • Although various theories have been presented on the mechanism of setting retardation of plaster in addition to organic admixtures. The purpose of this paper is that Hydration studies of plaster of paris in the presence of carboxylic acids under alkalinity are examined in the coordination chemistry. Setting of plaster of paris is retarded by the addition of carboxylic acids except oxalic acid. And setting of plaster of paris contained 5 wt% of Ca(OH)2 is also retarded by the addition of above-mentioned carboxylic acids. The degree of retarding effect under alkalinity is found to be a function of the number of the functional group and the length of carbon chain of carboxyl acids. These reasons are attributed to the soluble complex formation, that is calcium complex formation between calcium ion and carboxylic acids. The author's proposal was confirmed by the results of electrical conductivity measurement. The formation of calcium complex was surpported by IR spectra.

  • We present a novel method to implement time-delayed propagation of radiation fields in cosmological radiative transfer simulations. Time-delayed propagation of radiation fields requires construction of retarded-time fields by tracking the location and lifetime of radiation sources along the corresponding light-cones. Cosmological radiative transfer simulations have, until now, ignored this "light-cone effect" or implemented ray-tracing methods that are computationally demanding. We show that radiative transfer calculation of the time-delayed fields can be easily achieved in numerical simulations when periodic boundary conditions are used, by calculating the time-discretized retarded-time Green's function using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) method and convolving it with the source distribution. We also present a direct application of this method to the long-range radiation field of Lyman-Werner band photons, which is important in the high-redshift astrophysics with first stars.

  • Using cystine, ascorbic acid and citric acid, retarding and synergistic effect on the browning reaction of onion juice concentrate was evaluated. Cysteine retarded the browning reaction most effectively followed by citric acid ; on the contrary, ascorbic acid accelerated rather than retarded the reaction at the concentration of 0.1%. The retarding effect of cysteine increased abruptly up to concentration of 0.3% and remained unchanged. Citric acid acted more effectively than ascorbic acid in terms of synergism. The browning reaction of onion juice concentrate exhibited activation energies of 62J/mol with cysteine and citric acid as compared to 73J/mol for control. $Q_{10}$ was determined to be 2.52 and 2.38 for control, 2.2 and 2.09 for treatment in the temperature range of 30~4$0^{\circ}C$ and 40~5$0^{\circ}C$, respectively.
