Performing a series of in-situ thermal response tests, the effective thermal conductivity of six vertical closed-loop ground heat exchangers was experimentally evaluated and compared each other, which were constructed in a test bed in Wonju. To compare thermal efficiency of the ground heat exchangers in field, the six boreholes were constructed with different construction conditions: grouting materials (cement vs. bentonite), different additives (silica sand vs. graphite) and the shape of pipe-sections (general U-loop type vs. 3 pipe-type). From the test results, it can be concluded that cement grouting has a higher effective thermal conductivity than that of bentonite grouting, and the efficiency of graphite better performs over silica sand as a thermally-enhancing addictive. In addition, a new 3 pipe-type heat exchanger provides less thermal interference between the inlet and outlet pipe than the conventional U-loop type heat exchanger, which results in superior thermal performance.
The formation of macrophage foam cells stimulated by oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) is deemed an important cause of atherosclerosis. Transcription factor Yin Yang 1 (YY1), which is a universally expressed multifunctional protein, is closely related to cell metabolism disorders such as lipid metabolism, sugar metabolism, and bile acid metabolism. However, whether YY1 is involved in macrophage inflammation and lipid accumulation still remains unknown. After mouse macrophage cell line RAW264.7 cells were induced by ox-LDL, YY1 and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) expressions were found to be increased while low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) expression was lowly expressed. Subsequently, through reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), Western blot analysis, Oil Red O staining and cholesterol quantification, it turned out that silencing of YY1 attenuated the inflammatory response and lipid accumulation in RAW264.7 cells caused by ox-LDL. Moreover, results from the JASPAR database, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay, luciferase reporter assay and Western blot analysis suggested that YY1 activated PCSK9 by binding to PCSK9 promoter and modulated the expression of LDLR in the downstream of PCSK9. In addition, the results of functional experiments demonstrated that the inhibitory effects of YY1 interference on ox-LDL-mediated macrophage inflammation and lipid accumulation were reversed by PCSK9 overexpression. To sum up, YY1 depletion inhibited its activation of PCSK9, thereby reducing cellular inflammatory response, cholesterol homeostasis imbalance, and lipid accumulation caused by ox-LDL.
A new potassium sensitive field effect transistor modified with 4'-aminobenzo-15-crown-5 was prepared and its response characteristics were evaluated. The response slope of $K^{+}-ISFET$ for pH was 30.0 mV/decade and the response time was mere than 3 minutes. And the response slope and time of the $K^{+}-ISFET$ for potassium ion as $19.5{\pm}0.2{\;}mV/decade$ and about 3 minutes, respectively. The linear response range of the sensor for potassium ion was $2.0{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}1.0{\times}10^{-2}M$. The selectivity coefficients of the $K^{+}-ISFET$ for the alkali and alkaline earth metal ions were also evaluated. Sodium, ammonium and calcium ions exhibited relatively significant interference. The long term stability of the sensor was remarkably improved and it could be used for more than 50 days.

The springing response of a large blunt ship was considered to be influenced by a second order interaction between the incoming irregular wave and the blunt geometry of the forebody of the ship. Little efforts have been made to simulate this complicated fluid-structure interaction phenomenon under irregular waves considering the second order effect; hence, the above mentioned premise still remains unproven. In this paper, efforts were made to quantify the second order effect between the wave and vibrating flexible ship structure by analyzing the experimental data obtained through the model basin test of the scaled-segmented model of a large blunt ship. To achieve this goal, the measured vertical bending moment and the wave elevation time history were analyzed using a higher order spectral analysis technique, where the quadratic interaction between the excitation and response was captured by the cross bispectrum of two randomly oscillating variables. The nonlinear response of the vibrating hull was expressed in terms of a quadratic Volterra series assuming that the wave excitation is Gaussian. The Volterra series was then orthogonalized using Barrett's procedure to remove the interference between the kernels of different orders. Both the linear and quadratic transfer functions of the given system were then derived based on a Fourier transform of the orthogonalized Volterra series. Finally, the response was decomposed into a linear and quadratic part to determine the contribution of the second order effect using the obtained linear and quadratic transfer functions of the system, combined with the given wave spectrum used in the experiment. The contribution of the second order effect on the springing response of the analyzed ship was almost comparable to the linear one in terms of its peak power near the resonance frequency.
Planarians show negative phototaxis and have extensive regenerative ability, including the ability to regenerate the brain. Recently the process of regeneration of the planarian brain has been divided into three steps based on the expression of neural markers. In this study, we have analyzed the process of recovery of the light response during head regeneration. Although morphological observations indicated that regeneration of the eyes and optic nerves appeared to be completed by the fourth day, the recovery of the evasion behavior against light was not recovered within 4 days after amputation. Functional recovery of the evasion behavior could be detected starting 5 days after amputation and then gradually recovered. We previously identified genes which are specifically expressed in the brain after the recovery of morphological structures. This characteristic suggested that these genes may be involved in functional recovery of the brain. To investigate the function of these genes, we performed gene knockout analysis using the RNA interference method. The results clearly indicated that these genes are involved in the functional recovery of the visual system.
This paper proposes a novel covariance matrix estimation scheme for minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamforming. By accurately tracking direction-of-sound source arrival (DoA) information using audio-visual sensors, the covariance matrix is efficiently estimated by adopting a variable forgetting factor. The variable forgetting factor is determined by considering signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). Experimental results verify that the performance of the proposed method is superior to that of the conventional one in terms of interference/noise reduction and speech distortion.

We consider a system where a licensed radio spectrum is shared by multiple primary users(PUs) and secondary users(SUs). As the spectrum of interest is licensed to primary network, power and channel allocation must be carried out within the cognitive radio network so that no excessive interference is caused to PUs. For this system, we study the joint beamforming and power allocation problem via game theory in this paper. The problem is formulated as a non-cooperative beamforming and power allocation game, subject to the interference constraints of PUs as well as the peak transmission power constraints of SUs. We design a joint beamforming and power allocation algorithm for maximizing the total throughput of SUs, which is implemented by alternating iteration of minimum mean square error based decision feedback beamforming and a best response based iterative power allocation algorithm. Simulation results show that the algorithm has better performance than an existing algorithm and can converge to a locally optimal sum utility.

The synchronous phasor measurement algorithm is the core content of the phasor measurement unit. This manuscript proposes a dynamic synchronous phasor measurement algorithm based on compressed sensing theory. First, a dynamic signal model based on the Taylor series was established. The dynamic power signal was preprocessed using a least mean square error adaptive filter to eliminate interference from noise and harmonic components. A Chirplet overcomplete dictionary was then designed to realize a sparse representation. A reduction of the signal dimension was next achieved using a Gaussian observation matrix. Finally, the improved orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm was used to realize the sparse decomposition of the signal to be detected, the amplitude and phase of the original power signal were estimated according to the best matching atomic parameters, and the total vector error index was used for an error evaluation. Chroma 61511 was used for the output of various signals, the simulation results of which show that the proposed algorithm cannot only effectively filter out interference signals, it also achieves a better dynamic response performance and stability compared with a traditional DFT algorithm and the improved DFT synchronous phasor measurement algorithm, and the phasor measurement accuracy of the signal is greatly improved. In practical applications, the hardware costs of the system can be further reduced.
Chemically synthesized small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) can specifically knock-down expression of target genes via RNA interference (RNAi) pathway. To date, the length of synthetic siRNA duplex has been strictly maintained less than 30 bp, because an early study suggested that double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) longer than 30 bp could not trigger specific gene silencing due to the induction of non-specific antiviral interferon responses. Contrary to the current belief, here we show that synthetic dsRNA as long as 38 bp can result in specific target gene silencing without non-specific antiviral responses. Using this longer duplex structure, we have generated dsRNAs, which can simultaneously knock-down expression of two target genes (termed as dual-target siRNAs or dsiRNAs). Our results thus demonstrate the structural flexibility of gene silencing siRNAs, and provide a starting point to construct multifunctional RNA structures. The dsiRNAs could be utilized to develop a novel therapeutic gene silencing strategy against diseases with multiple gene alternations such as viral infection and cancer.
