  • Purpose. This study aimed to assess the influence of various micromechanical surface conditioning (MSC) strategies with or without coupling agent (silane) application on the micro-shear bond strength (µSBS) of resin- matrix ceramics (RMCs). Materials and Methods. GC Cerasmart (GC), Lava Ultimate (LU), Vita Enamic (VE), Voco Grandio (VG), and Brilliant Crios (BC) were cut into 1.0-mm-thick slices (n = 32 per RMC) and separated into four groups according to the MSC strategy applied: control-no conditioning (C), air-borne particle abrasion with aluminum oxide particles (APA), 2W- and 3W-Er,Cr:YSGG group coding is missing. The specimens in each group were further separated into silane-applied and silane-free subgroups. Each specimen received two resin cement microtubules (n = 8 per subgroup). A shear force was applied to the adhesive interface through a universal test machine and µSBS values were measured. Data were statistically analyzed by using 3-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test. Failure patterns were scrutinized under stereomicroscope. Results. RMC material type, MSC strategy, and silanization influenced the µSBS values (P<.05). In comparison to the control group, µSBS values increased after all other MSC strategies (P<.05) while the differences among these strategies were insignificant (P>.05). For control and APA, there were insignificant differences between RMCs (P>.05). The silanization decreased µSBS values of RMCs except for VE. Considerable declines were observed in GC and BC (P<.05). Conclusion. MSC strategies can enhance bond strength values at the RMC - cement interface. However, the choice of MSC strategy is dependent on RMC material type and each RMC can require a dedicated way of conditioning.

  • Recently, the development of a new class of anti-fouling paint resin which has excellent anti-fouling performance and no persistence in the marine ecology is necessary. In this study, we first polymerized polyurethanes (PUs) as the other type of matrix which have carboxylic acid groups by using poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), and 2,2'-bis(hydroxyl methyl)-propionic acid (DMPA). And next, we synthesized final resins having quaternary ammonium salts on pendant acid groups of PUs. After synthesis, the physical self-polishing property of resin by the measurement of reduced thickness in sea water was tested. The mechanical property of antifouling paint resin was good when the molecular weight of PEG was 600 or less. It was confirmed that the adhesion of PU resin was deteriorated when the content of quaternary ammonium salt was incorporated over specific value.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of an indirect resin composite (IRC) to the various resin matrix ceramic (RMC) blocks using different surface treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ninety-nine cubic RMC specimens consisting of a resin nanoceramic (RNC), a polymer-infiltrated hybrid ceramic (PIHC), and a flexible hybrid ceramic (FHC) were divided randomly into three surface treatment subgroups (n = 11). In the experimental groups, untreated (Cnt), tribochemical silica coating (Tbc), and Neodymium-Doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd:YAG) laser irradiation (Lsr) with 3 W (150 mJ/pulse, 20 Hz for 20 sec.) were used as surface treatments. An indirect composite resin (IRC) was layered with a disc-shape mold ($2{\times}3mm$) onto the treated-ceramic surfaces and the specimens submitted to thermal cycling (6000 cycles, $5-55^{\circ}C$). The SBS test of specimens was performed using a universal testing machine and the specimens were examined with a scanning electron microscope to determine the failure mode. Data were statistically analyzed with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD test (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. According to the two-way ANOVA, only the surface treatment parameter was statistically significant (P<.05) on the SBS of IRC to RMC. The SBS values of Lsr-applied RMC groups were significantly higher than Cnt groups for each RMC material, (P<.05). Significant differences were also determined between Tbc surface treatment applied and untreated (Cnt) PIHC materials (P=.039). CONCLUSION. For promoting a reliable bond strength during characterization of RMC with IRC, Nd:YAG laser or Tbc surface treatment technique should be used, putting in consideration the microstructure and composition of RMC materials and appropriate parameters for each material.

  • Considering the properties of the carbon nano tubes (CNT), their inclusion into the polymer matrix vastly increases the properties of the resultant composite. However, this is not the case due to the poor interfacial adhesion of the CNT and the polymer matrix. The present approach focuses on increasing the interaction between the polymer matrix and the CNT through the chemical modification of the CNT resulting in allyl ester functionalized carbon nanotubes (ACNT) and silane functionalized carbon nano tubes (SCNT) which are capable of reacting with the polymer matrix during the curing reaction. The addition of ACNT/SCNT into unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) resulted in the improvement of the electrical properties of resulted nanocomposites in comparison to the CNT. The surface resistivity, volume resistivity, dielectric strength, dry arc resistivity, and the comparative tracking index of the nanocomposites were significantly improved in comparison to CNT. The chemical modification of CNT was confirmed via spectroscopy.

  • Fiber reinforced metal laminates(FRMLs) were new type of hybrid materials. FRMLs consist of high strength metals(Al 5052-H34) and laminated fiber with structural adhesive bond. The effect of resin mixture ratios on the fatigue crack propagation behavior and mechanical properties of aramid fiber reinforced aluminum composites was investigated. The epoxy, diglycidylether of bisphenol A(DGEBA), was cured with methylene dianiline(MDA) with or without an accelerator(K-54). Eight kinds of resin mixture ratio were used for the experiment ; five kinds of FRMLs(1)(mixture of epoxy and curing agent) and three kinds of FRMLs(2)mixture of epoxy, curing agent and accelerator). The characteristic of fatigue crack propagation behavior and mechanical properties FRMLs(2) shows more effecting than that of FRMLs(1).

  • Teeth that have short clinical crown, which are not alone enough to support the definitive restoration can be best treated using the post and core system. The advantages of fiber post over conventional metallic post materials have led to its wide acceptance. In addition to that the combination of aesthetic and mechanical benefits of fiber post has provided it with a rise in the field of dentistry. Also the results obtained from some clinical trials have encouraged the clinicians to use the fiber posts confidently. Fiber posts are manufactured from pre-stretched fibers impregnated within a resin matrix. The fibers could that be of carbon, glass/silica, and quartz, whereas Epoxy and bis-GMA are the most widely used resin bases. But recently studies are also found to be going on for polyimide as possible material for the fiber post resin base as a substitute for the conventional materials.

  • The waste FRP occured in the fabrication of SMC (sheet molding compound) bathtubs and the waste polyurethane foam occured in electronic manufacture and waste insulator were applied as a soundproof and light weight pannel in the waste FRP unsaturated polyester matrix resin composites to recycle. The effect of filler contents on the mechanical properties and interfacial phenomena of the filler and matrix on the composites was evaluated. The tensile strength of composites reached its maximum value of 82.34 MPa when the filler content was 70 wt%, and the more content of reinforcement is increased, the more tensile modulus was decreased. The flexural strength and modulus of composites, reinforced 70 wt% with filler content, were dominant compared to the other samples to 72.5 MPa, 958.4 MPa respectively. When composite of reinforced 70 wt% with filler content, it was confirmed that pull out phenomena and cracks did not occur in the interface of reinforcement and matrix resin through the SEM observation. Also, waste FRP and urethane foam were dispersed well into matrix resin as filler.

  • Heterogeneous cation exchange membrane consisting of cation exchange resin particles (diameter of less than $149{\mu}$) which are finely dispersed in a polyethylene matrix, were produced as forms of sheet. The characteristics were measured after treating hot water or saturated sodium chloride. When membranes were treated with hot water or saturated sodium chloride, cation exchange resin particles swell and expand pushing away the polyethylene matrix of membranes. The above treatment results the formation of narrow cavities between a cation exchange resin particles and polyethylene matrix, and the formation of fine micro-cracks on the polyethylene matrix. Thus, we were obtained good physical and electrochemical properties. On the treatment with hot water or saturated sodium chloride, the optimum conditions for good heterogeneous cation exchange membrane were treatment time of 30min and treatment temperature of $90^{\circ}C$.
