Out-of-Permeability Measurement of the Braided Preform in Resin Transfer Molding (고분자 수지 이송 성형에서 브레이드 프리폼의 두께방향 투과율 계수 측정)

  • In Resin transfer molding (RTM), composite parts are produced by impregnation of a dry reinforcement with liquid matrix resin. Permeability is a key issue in this process. For thin parts, the resin flow in the thickness direction can be neglected. Therefore thin parts are considered as two-dimensional composites. However the resin flow through the thickness is important to thicker parts and we have to consider out-of-plane permeability. This work discusses a method to measure out-of-plane permeability. The flow rate and pressure drop across the porous media were measured. Also one dimensional form of Darcy's law is applied to calculate the out-of-plane permeability of various preforms. The flow is injected uniformly into layers of the preform. And a circular fiber mat with 6cm diameter was cut and flattened from cylindrical mandrel.

  • The conventional FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastic) manufacturing process used thermoset resins for ease of molding but faced the issue of non-recyclability. To address these shortcomings, a new process utilizing thermal plastic resin was developed. However, due to the high viscosity of thermal plastic resin, problems such as fiber deformation and a reduced fiber volume fraction occurred during the high-temperature, high-pressure process. In this study, to overcome the limitations of the conventional process, fiber-reinforced composite materials were manufactured through in-situ polymerization using PLA (Poly L-Lactide) resin in the VA-RTM (Vacuum Assistance Resin Transfer Molding) process. The fiber volume of the produced specimens was calculated, and resin impregnation and porosity were confirmed through optical microscopy. Additionally, molecular weight analysis using GPC (Gel Permission Chromatography) demonstrated improvements over the conventional process and emphasized the essential requirement of temperature control.

  • There were some cases in the past that waterlogged wooden finds were neglected and damaged severely because adequate methods of conservation processing could not be found. However, since a wooden ship unearthed in Anapji of Kyongju was processed by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) impregnation method in 1975, most of waterlogged wooden finds have been processed by diverse scientific methods. Most commonly-used conservation processing methods of waterlogged wooden finds in Korea are PEG impregnation method, alcohol-ether-resin method and vacuum freeze-drying method. New methods developed recently in Europe and Japan such as sucrose method, sugar-alcohol method and higher alcohol method are also being studied here. The most important task in conservation processing of waterlogged wood is to find good impregnation materials suitable to Korean climate and environments and develop their application methods. For efficient conservation processing, it is important to know the natures of finds and impregnation materials and relation between impregnation and drying condition. To achieve it, many experiments and studies are needed.

Effect of Change in Open Porosity as a Function of Uniaxial Molding Pressure on Density Improvement After Impregnation (일축가압법으로 벌크흑연 제조 시 성형압력에 따른 열린기공률 변화가 함침 후 밀도 향상에 미치는 영향)

  • The change in the open porosity of bulk graphite as a function of the uniaxial molding pressure during manufacturing is studied using artificial graphite powder. Subsequently, the graphite is impregnated to determine the effect of the open porosity on the impregnation efficiency and to improve the density of the final bulk graphite. Bulk graphite is manufactured with different uniaxial molding pressures after mixing graphite powder, which is the by-product of processing the final graphite products and phenolic resin. The bulk density and open porosity are measured using the Archimedes method. The bulk density and open porosity of bulk graphite increase as the molding pressure increases. The open porosity of molded bulk graphite is 25.35% at 30 MPa and 29.84% at 300 MPa. It is confirmed that the impregnation efficiency increases when the impregnation process is performed on a specimen with large open porosity. In this study, the bulk density of bulk graphite molded at 300 MPa is 11.06% higher than that before impregnation, which is the highest reported increase. Therefore, it is expected that the higher the uniaxial pressure, the higher the density of bulk graphite.

  • A new porous carbon material "woodceramics" was developed by carbonizing wood or woody materials impregnated with thermosetting resin. Steamed board and non-steamed board were made from thinned small log of Aomori Hiba (Thujopsis dolabrata S. et. Z. var. hondae M.). They were impregnated with phenol resin and sintered in a vacuum furnace at $650^{\circ}C$. In this paper, the manufacturing method of woodceramics and changes of dimension, weight and compressive strength were investigated. The changes of dimension, weight and compressive strength depend on the types of board and density.

  • The production of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics(CFRTP) parts using an injection/compression molding process that differs from the conventionally used fabrication methods was investigated Before the application of composite molding in the injection/compression molding process, a simple compression molding experiment was performed using a hydraulic press machine to determine the characteristics of resin impregnation and to obtain a basic physical property data for the CFRTP. Based on these results, injection/compression molded specimens were manufactured and an additional insert/over molding process was applied to improve the impregnation rate of the molded specimens. The results demonstrated that the tensile strength of the molded parts using the faster injection/compression process was similar to that of a hydraulic press molded product.

Change of Surface Temperature in Woodceramics Made from MDF(II) - Effect of Impregnation Rate and Burning Temperature - (MDF로 제조된 우드세라믹의 표면온도 변화(II) - 수지 함침율과 소성온도의 영향 -)

  • In this study, woodceramics were made from MDF with various resin impregnation rate. To investigate the change of surface temperature of woodceramics, the impregnated MDF was burned at the temp. 600, 800, 1,000, 1,200℃. Surface temperature of woodceramics was increased as impregnation rate and burning temperature was increased. The specimen burned at 800℃ was lower than others. Change of temperature under given temperature increased as time passed and it showed more increased in temperature at burning temperature of 1,200℃. Change of surface temperature increased when floor temperature increased and the temperature was 49.2℃ at 70℃ in floor temperature of 1,200℃ specimen. The decent in surface temperature of woodceramics was the fastest decrease at the burning temperature of 800℃ specimen.

  • Woodceramics are new porous carbon materials obtained by burning wood or woody materials impregnated with thermosetting resin in a vacuum furnace. In this paper, the change of dimensions and bending strength of woodceramics which were made from medium density fiberboard have been investigated to examination the possibility of utilization as a woodceramics materials. 1) An increasing rate of dimension in impregnated board increased with increasing resin impregnation rate. And increasing rate of thickness was higher than that of length. 2) When the resin impregnation rate increased, the bending strength of impregnated board had a tendency to increase. 3) The rates of weight loss, length and thickness reduction of woodceramics showed a slight increase with increased burning temperature. 4) The density of woodceramics showed a increase from at 500℃ till at 800℃ with increasing burning temperature but decrease at 1,000℃ 5) When the burning temperature increased, the bending strength of woodceramics had a tendency to increase.

  • Bulk YBCO 초전도체는 top-seeded melt-growth 방법으로 제조되었다. YBCO bulk는 Epoxy resin과 $AgNO_3$를 보강해 초전도체의 기계적 강도를 향상하고자 하였다. Epoxy resin은 보강 재료인 STYCAST 2850-FT와 경화제인 CATALYST 24LV 를 100:5 비율로 혼합하여 제조한 후 mould에 넣고 $66^{\circ}C$에서 2시간 열처리 하였다 (rotary pump로 진공 분위기 조성). $AgNO_3$$350^{\circ}C$에서 2시간, $450^{\circ}C$에서 1시간 열처리 하여 Ag와 $NO_3$의 분리 후 YBCO bulk에 Ag가 보강되도록 하였다. Epoxy resin 과 분리된 Ag는 YBCO bluk의 crack과 void에 침투되는 것을 SEM과 광학현미경을 통해 관찰할 수 있었다. Three point bending test를 이용하여 보강 전후의 YBCO bulk의 기계적 강도를 측정하였다. 보강 후의 YBCO bluk의 기계적 강도는 보강 전에 비해 향상된 결과를 확인할 수 있었고, Epoxy resin과 $AgNO_3$를 보강한 YBCO는 기계적 강도 향상에 높은 신뢰성을 보이고 있다.

AC Electrical Breakdown Characteristics of an Epoxy/Mica Composite

  • Epoxy/mica composite was synthesized, in order to use it as an impregnation resin in a vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) process, for manufacturing a high voltage rotary machine. The average particle size of the mica was 5~7 ${\mu}m$ and its content was 0, 20, 30 and 40 wt%. A plasticizer or a low molecular aliphatic epoxy was also used, to decrease the viscosity of the composite. The AC electrical breakdown strength was estimated in sphere-to-sphere electrodes, and the electrical breakdown data were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. The electrical breakdown strength became higher with the addition of mica; and that of the system with 20 wt% mica was highest. The electrical breakdown strength of the system with an aliphatic epoxy was higher than that of the system with a, plasticizer.
