  • This study was conducted to determine the optimal working conditions when a recently developed blower-type onion stem cutter is utilized for cutting onion leaves at harvest time. The June 20 leaf cutting treatment group had the highest leaf dryness among the treatment groups (leaf dryness: 66.3%; leaf moisture content: 50.5%); the residual leaf length was 6.7 ± 3.5 cm. It is considered to have the best mechanical leaf cutting performance among the treatment groups because it is included in the optimal range of 4-10 cm. The average working speed of mechanical onion leaf cutting using the stem cutter was 0.17 m·s-1, which is approximately 3.4 times faster than the average working speed of 0.05 m·s-1 in the human leaf cutting treatment group. This is expected to save approximately 2.6 hours compared to human labor (based on one person) when working on a 10a area using this machine. In addition, the incidence of damaged bulbs in the machine leaf cutting treatment group was 1.3%, compared to 0.0% in the manual leaf cutting treatment group. This suggests that the mechanical leaf cutting treatment group had a higher average onion bulb decay rate during storage than the manual leaf cutting treatment group. When the storage characteristics of each treatment group were examined, the decay rate by bulb part (leaf connected or root connected) after 8 months of storage was higher in the treatment group with a residual leaf length of less than 5.0 cm after mechanical leaf cutting than in the treatment with a residual leaf length of more than 5.0 cm. This is thought to be due to the fact that treatments with a residual leaf length of less than 5.0 cm are more susceptible to infection by pathogens that cause decay during storage than treatments with a residual leaf length of 5.0 cm or more. Based on the results of this experiment, performance target of the experimental machine (residual leaf length after operation: 5 cm), and existing research on the optimal residual leaf length for onion harvesting, it is recommended to cut onion leaves so that the residual leaf length is 5-10 cm when using the stem cutter.

  • The temperature distribution in the weldment is not uniform because a weldment is locally heated. Thermal plastic deformation results from the local expansion and shrinkage by the heating and cooling of metal. Therefore, residual stresses and distortion occur in the weldment. In this study, we had conducted on the weld thermal cycle simulation that is supposed as the HAZ on SS400 steel and STS304 steel. The residual stresses that were obtained from the drawing and the weld thermal cycle simulation were estimated by X-ray diffraction. We also carried out ultrasonic test for the weld thermal cycle simulated specimens, and then conducted on nondestructive evaluation by the ultrasonic parameters obtained ultrasonic test. From the results, residual stresses of weld thermal cycle simulated specimens after the residual stress removal heat treatment are lower than that of the drawing.

  • This paper presents a modified residual-based EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) for performance improvement of indoor positioning using WiFi RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) measurement. Radio signal strength in indoor environments may have irregular attenuation characteristics due to obstacles such as walls, furniture, etc. Therefore, the performance of the RSSI-based positioning with the conventional trilateration method or Kalman filter is insufficient to provide location-based accurate information services. In order to enhance the performance of indoor positioning, in this paper, error analysis of the distance calculated by using the WiFi RSSI measurement is performed based on the radio propagation model. Then, an IARM (Irregularly Attenuated RSSI Measurement) error is defined. Also, it shows that the IARM error is included in the residual of the positioning filter. The IARM error is always positive. So, it is presented that the IARM error can be estimated by taking the absolute value of the residual. Consequently, accurate positioning can be achieved based on the IEM (IARM Error Mitigated) EKF with the residual modified by using the estimated IARM error. The performance of the presented IEM EKF is verified experimentally.

  • In this study, we investigate the multi-carrier spread spectrum (MCSS) communication system which adopts the self-encoded spread spectrum in a downlink synchronous channel. It is very difficult to completely eliminate the frequency offset in practical channel scenarios. We demonstrate that the self-encoded MCSS (SE-MCSS) with iterative despreading manifests a remarkable immunity to residual frequency offset. The SE-MCSS can be an excellent candidate for the future generation of wireless services.

  • The purpose of this study is to observe the pattern of change in medical care utilization over time in early years of insurance coverage. The source of data is the benefit records file of a voluntary medical insurance society for covering the four-year period, from 1982 to 1985. The measure of medical care utilization used in this study is the age-sex standardized percentage of the enrollee who have visited a physician over total analytical population during a three-month period. For six cohorts by the year of enrollment ($1979{\sim}1984$), the relationship between the utilization and duration of insurance coverage was examined controlling for the calender year and season. In the analysis, logistic multiple regression and residual analysis were employed. It was observed that medical care utilization rapidly increased during the early stage of insurance coverage, and after then increased at a slower rate over time to become almost stable in about twenty months.

  • Traffic sign recognition plays an important role in solving traffic-related problems. Traffic sign recognition and classification systems are key components for traffic safety, traffic monitoring, autonomous driving services, and autonomous vehicles. A lightweight model, applicable to portable devices, is an essential aspect of the design agenda. We suggest a lightweight convolutional neural network model with residual blocks for traffic sign recognition systems. The proposed model shows very competitive results on publicly available benchmark data.

  • This study build finite element analysis (FEA) models describing the bending events of coiled tubing (CT) at the wellhead and trips into the hole, accurately provide the state of stress and strain while the CT is in service. The bending moment and axial force history curves are used as loads and boundary conditions in the diametrical growth models to ensure consistency with the actual working conditions in field operations. The simulation diametrical growth results in this study are more accurate and reasonable. Analysis the factors influencing fatigue and diametrical growth shows that the internal pressure has a first-order influence on fatigue, followed by the radius of the guide arch, reel and the CT diameter. As the number of trip cycles increase, fatigue damage, residual stress and strain cumulatively increase, until CT failure occurs. Significant residual stresses remain in the CT cross-section, and the CT exhibits a residual curvature, the initial residual bending configuration of CT under wellbore constraints, after running into the hole, is sinusoidal. The residual stresses and residual bending configuration significantly decrease the buckling load, making the buckling and buckling release of CT in the downhole an elastic-plastic process, exacerbating the helical lockup. The conclusions drawn in this study will improve CT models and contribute to the operational and economic success of CT services.

  • We analyze an integrated voice/data CDMA system, where the whole channels are divided into voice prioritized channels and voice non-prioritized channels. For real-time voice service, a preemptivc priority is granted in the voice prioritized channels. And, for delay-tolerant data service, the employment of buffer is considered. On the other hand, the transmission permission probability in best-effort packet-data service is controlled by estimating the residual capacity available for users. We build a 2-dimensional markov chain about prioritized-voice and stream-data services and accomplish numerical analysis in combination with packet-data traffic based on residual capacity equation.

  • Infection risks of handling specimens associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) by public health laboratory services teams were assessed to scrutinize the potential hazards arising from the work procedures. Through risk assessments of all work sequences, laboratory equipment, and workplace environments, no aerosol-generating procedures could be identified except the procedures (mixing and transfer steps) inside biological safety cabinets. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as surgical masks, protective gowns, face shields/safety goggles, and disposable gloves, together with pertinent safety training, was provided for laboratory work. Proper disinfection and good hand hygiene practices could minimize the probability of SARS-CoV-2 infection at work. All residual risk levels of the potential hazards identified were within the acceptable level. Contamination by gloved hands was considered as a major exposure route for SARS-CoV-2 when compared with eye protection equipment. Competence in proper donning and doffing of PPE accompanied by hand washing techniques was of utmost importance for infection control.
