  • This study is about the ‘paradigm’ which works as a theoretical base for planning and managing elderly housing. For this purpose, this study surveyed published research works, and analysed the contents and the paradigms of the researches. This is based on the literature survey, and surveyed 66 research works published in the last 8 years. The result of the survey tells us that almost all of the research works done by Korean scholars are based on the rational approach to the design of elderly housing. They emphasize ‘functional rationalism’ ‘technical perfection’ ‘reasonable program’ ‘economy and market’, etc. However, such qualities as‘character of human being’ ‘depth of existence’ ‘identity of culture’ ‘speciality of place’are not emphasized. This means that paradigms used by Korean scholars are biased, and are far from the plural culture characterizing 21 st century. This study, therefore, analysed new paradigms appeared on the recent research works about housing environment, and suggests several new paradigms which would be essential for future planning of elderly housing.

  • There have been two dominant paradigms in understanding and modeling an expert's decision-making behavior: output analysis and process-tracing. While the two paradigms are complementary, they have not been used yet in a combined manner. This study extends the previous research work in the two paradigms to inductive modeling research by 1) analyzing individual experts' decision strategies, 2) comparing performance of four popular inductive modeling methods, and 3) matching their performance against the type of decision strategy employed by experts.

  • The present study aims at encouraging discussion on research paradigms as well as research methodologies of records and archives studies. Reviewing research paradigms, defined by Guba and Lincoln based on basic beliefs, leads to the suggestion that the discipline needs to reach to a certain degree of consensus on ontological, epistemological, and methodological premises in order to inform and guide future research. To make the argument, the present study reviews all research papers published in two major journals: the Korean Journal of Archival Studies and Journal of Korean Society of Archives and Records Management, from 2007 to 2016. It then identifies 80 research papers from positivistic research and reviews 32 papers, which collected data through surveys and experiments.

  • Intelligent Control is an extended paradigm that subsumes both control and AI paradigms, each of which is limited by its own abstractions. Autonomy, as a design goal, offers an arena where both control and AI paradigms must be applied -and a challenge to the viability of both as independent entities. We discuss hierarchical event-based control architectures in which AI and Control paradigms can be integrated within a model-based approach. In a niodel-based system, knowledge is encapsulated in the form of models at the various layers to support the predefined system objectives. Concepts are illustrated with a robotmanaged space-borne chemical laboratory.

  • This article highlights the importance of design in the formation of worldview paradigms in global culture. The research aims to investigate the design development as a part of the culture and its significance in the social development of society and worldview standards. The article uses general scientific methods of cognition, showing the transformation of design in the social and cultural sphere based on scientific and business literature. The research results show the chronology of design development as a factor determining the development of society and its worldview. In particular, the epoch of modernism, classical functionalism, postmodernism, post-industrialism, and digital design show their own particularities of design development. Furthermore, the article reveals the peculiarities of design development and its requirements depending on the development of society, progress, and civilization in general. The question of current and future trends in the development of design as a factor of worldview paradigms in the culture is based on digitalization, globalization, and the formation of design as an independent entity that determines man's place in the world and society.

  • 21st century has different characters from 20th century which was an era of machine and rationality based on the industrial revolution. With the advent of the digital revolution, it became an era of pluralism, culture, and emotion. The digital technology made it possible to connect the whole world together in real time and brought about the entirely new notion of time and space. It also dramatically altered the world view. Now we have a different set of social and cultural values from the past. This paper researched the influences of these social and cultural changes on public designs. The leading trends of public designs were analyzed and the successful cases were studied. The main research methodologies were the document review and the instrumental case study. The major social & cultural paradigms of a present era were classified as 'pluralism', 'digital & information revolution', 'human-centered value (against machine-centered value of 20th century)', and 'organic world view'. Each of the classified paradigms was analyzed more to find out the influences on the various trends of public designs. 'Pluralism' has influence on 'experiential public design', 'community art', and 'public design of local values'. 'Digital & information revolution' has influence on 'content-centered public design', 'smart public design', 'immaterial public design', and 'performance in public design'. 'Human-centered value' has influence on 'universal design approach in public design', and 'emotional public design'. 'Organic world view' has influence on 'sustainable public design', and 'ecological public design'.

  • The purpose of this paper is to attempt the analysis of the 'Positivist' School and the 'Interpretative' School to the Relationship between Theory and Method, Using examples from Criminological Research. The differences between approach of the positivist school and interpretative school are often made very difficult to make an approach. What are more to focus on are the relationships between quantitative research and positivism and qualitative research and interpretative paradigms are often presented as essential connections. Therefore, it is a lot more difficult to imply an appropriate research method and process depends on the subject and field of the research topic. The differences between types of research and also the connections which are made between types of research and theoretical paradigms portray a very simple picture. The danger of this is that two readily available set of research methods and assuming that positivist and interpretative research style represent competing approaches and also that they present 'either-or' alternatives as to strategies of research. For example, in some instances positivist and interpretative's methods do represent alternatives but in some case, positivist and interprativist each other can complement about each other's defects in terms of use of methodology. Though depending according to the specialist of the topic, it needs sensitivity to the potentials and the contributions of different styles of data and different methods of information collection and analysis to the criminological issues under test and to the theoretical questions being asked of them.

  • In recent years, our society has shifted from an information society to an intelligent information society, in which computing has become a key factor in shaping and driving social development. In this new era of digital civilization powered by the Internet of Things, traditional data-based computing is no longer sufficient to meet the growing demand for higher levels of intelligence. Therefore, intelligent computing has emerged, reshaping traditional computing and forming new computing paradigms to promote the digital revolution in the era of the Internet of Things, big data, and artificial intelligence. Intelligent computing has greatly expanded the scope of computing through new computing theories, architectures, methodologies, systems, and applications, and it is expanding into diverse computing paradigms such as perceptual intelligence, cognitive intelligence, autonomous intelligence, and human-computer fusion intelligence. This paper introduces the concept and main features of intelligent computing and describes trends in standardization for intelligent computing within the ISO/IEC JTC 1, focusing on the technical trend report on intelligent computing that is currently under development within ISO/ IEC JTC 1/AG 2.

  • Product-service systems (PSS), integrating physical products and services, currently play a crucial role in sustainable economies. In addition to the highly competitive global economy, the emergence of new digital paradigms is supporting the shift toward servitization. Although the great potential of such paradigms is recognized by both practice and research, their implications for PSS are not yet clear. In particular, features of Internet of Things (IoT), such as total connectedness and ubiquity of smart sensors and actuators, provide various new opportunities for PSS. This study explores such opportunities by conducting structured literature review and 13 interviews. We organize the findings in two folds: First, we introduce four degrees of IoT involvement in PSS business models and elaborate the opportunities that they create for different types of PSS. Second, we present the key technologies and approaches that IoT provides concerning PSS lifecycle management.
