  • In this paper, we have studied manufacturing process for liquid crystal displays (LCDs) using plastic substrates. Because the thermal and dimensional stabilities of plastic substrates are decisive issues, both the process and materials were improved to fit the manufacturing requirements of flexible twisted-nematic (TN) and color super-twisted nematic (CSTN) LCDs. Finally, to broaden the flexible display applications, we take advantage of the unique properties of flexible display to design several innovative products.

  • We demonstrate coherent x-ray diffraction imaging using table-top x-ray laser at a wavelength of 13.9nm driven by 10-Hz ti:Sapphire laser system at the Advanced Photonics Research Institute in Korea. Since the flux of x-ray photons reaches as high as $10^9$ photons/pulse in a $20{\times}20{\mu}m^2$ field of view, we measured a ingle-pulse diffraction pattern of a micrometer-scale object with high dynamic range of diffraction intensities and successfully reconstructed to the image using phase retrieval algorithm with an oversampling ratio of 1:6. the imaging resolution is $^{\sim}150$ nm, while that is much improved by stacking the many diffraction patterns. This demonstration can be extended to the biological sample with the diffraction limited resolution.

  • The seasonal variation of fecal coliforms (FCs) and physicochemical factors was determined in seawaters of the Hansan-Geojeman area, including a designated area for oyster, and in inland pollution sources of its drainage basin. The mean daily loads of FCs in inland pollution sources ranged from $1.2{\times}10^9$ to $3.1{\times}10^{11}$ most probable number (MPN)/day; however, the pollutants could not be reached at the designated area. FC concentrations of seawaters were closely related to season, rainfall, and inland contaminants, however, within the regulation limit of various countries for shellfish. The highest concentrations for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ in seawaters were shown in the surface layer during August with high rainfall, whereas the lowest for dissolved oxygen (DO) in the bottom layer of the same month. Therefore, it indicates that the concentrations of FC, COD, DO, and $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ of seawaters were closely related to season and rainfall.

  • We present AB9, a neural processor for inference acceleration. AB9 consists of a systolic tensor core (STC) neural network accelerator designed to accelerate artificial intelligence applications by exploiting the data reuse and parallelism characteristics inherent in neural networks while providing fast access to large on-chip memory. Complementing the hardware is an intuitive and user-friendly development environment that includes a simulator and an implementation flow that provides a high degree of programmability with a short development time. Along with a 40-TFLOP STC that includes 32k arithmetic units and over 36 MB of on-chip SRAM, our baseline implementation of AB9 consists of a 1-GHz quad-core setup with other various industry-standard peripheral intellectual properties. The acceleration performance and power efficiency were evaluated using YOLOv2, and the results show that AB9 has superior performance and power efficiency to that of a general-purpose graphics processing unit implementation. AB9 has been taped out in the TSMC 28-nm process with a chip size of 17 × 23 ㎟. Delivery is expected later this year.

  • Ginsenosides, which are the active materials of ginseng, have biological functions that include anti-osteoporotic effects. Aqueous ginseng extract inhibits osteoclast differentiation induced by receptor activator of NF-${\kappa}B$ ligand (RANKL). Aqueous ginseng extract produces chromatography peaks characteristic of ginsenosides. Among these peaks, ginsenoside Re is a major component. However, the preventive effects of ginsenoside Re against osteoclast differentiation are not known. We studied the effect of ginsenoside Re on osteoclast differentiation, RANKL-induced tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) activity, and formation of multinucleated osteoclasts in vitro. Ginsenoside Re hampered osteoclast differentiation in a dose-dependent manner. In an in vivo zebrafish model, aqueous ginseng extract and ginsenoside Re had anti-osteoclastogenesis effects. These findings suggest that both aqueous ginseng extract and ginsenoside Re prevent bone resorption by inhibiting osteoclast differentiation. Ginsenoside Re could be important for promoting bone health.

  • Depending on the optical design method, a novel dual-mode transflective LCD with proper LC material and optical films was developed. The design increased the optical transmittance and the reflectivity of dual-mode transflective LCDs with the proper parameters of cell gap, alignment layer and optical films. These parameters were evaluated by computer simulation. The simulation results also revealed that the transmissive and reflective states presented similar performance in the transflective LCDs.
