  • This paper discusses models for estimating dynamic travel times based on probability theory. The dynamic travel time models proposed in the paper are formulated assuming that the travel time of a vehicle depends on the distribution of the traffic stream condition with respect to the location along a road when the subject vehicle enters the starting point of a travel distance or with respect to the time at the starting point of a travel distance. The models also assume that the dynamic traffic flow can be represented as an exponential distribution function among other types of probability density functions.

  • This paper describes an interpolation method for a parametric surface. A parametric surface is approximated to triangular mesh surfaces and then the basic paths are achieved. As the generated path is a series of linear segments, this algorithm can be easily adapted to general NC controllers. The generated paths have minimal transfer length and are gouge-free within the approximation tolerance. The problems, induced when the paths are represented by linear segments, are overcome without making any path deviation by this algorithm. This algorithm saves machining time by eliminating overdetermined tool paths and keeping the desired average feedrate, which improve productivity and lead to lower production costs.

  • Several seismic traces of earthquakes observed from the digital new type seismograph instruments of KMA in 2000 were scanned. From these, good quality data which have high signal/noise ratio were selected and they were transformed into ascii data from binary data(min-seed format). The hypo71 program and P-S was applied in order to determine the location of epicenter, origin time and the magnitude. From these data, the 29 earthquakes, 358 seismic records consist of 587 directional components were calculated. Using these, ground acceleration data, acceleration, velocity, and displacemnet response spectrums of the structures were calculated and they could be represented in a picture by the form of tripartite response spectrum. In the result, response spectrums of the 587 directional components of the above seismic data records were obtained respectively.

  • The variable node plate bending element, ie, the element with one or two additional mid-side nodes is used in the analysis of mat foundation to generate the nearly ideal grid model in which more nodes are defined near the column location. The plate bending element used in this study is the one based on Mindlin/Reissner plate theory with substitute shear strain field and the nodal stresses of that element are obtained by the local smoothing technique. The interaction of the soil material with the mat foundation is modeled with Winkler springs connected to the nodal points in the mat model. The vertical stiffness of the soil material are represented in terms of a modulus of subgrade reaction and are computed in the same way as to the computation of consistent nodal force of uniform surface loading. Several mesh schemes were proposed and tested to find the most suitable scheme for mat foundation analysis.

  • Telematics services include automatic location tracking for emergency rescue, which is available for use in case of a car accident due to falling off roadways. This paper presents a simulation study on how far a car will fall before it hits the ground if it drops off of a roadway due to an accident or a natural disaster. The greatest horizontal distance the falling car can travel is presented in this paper, based on the assumption that air resistance as well as the direction and degree of acceleration due to gravity is negligible. This paper also presents the depth of the dent caused by the car sinking into the ground, the time it took for the car to fall free, and the velocity at which it travelled and horizontal distance it traveled. In this paper, the damage done to cars that crash into the ground and the dangers thereof are graphically represented.

  • In this paper, the static and dynamic characteristics in the sensor tube of a mass flow controller(MFC) were studied by experiments. In the sensor tube of MFC. the difference of temperature between inlet and outlet was necessary for calculating the mass flow rate. Therefore, the relations among flow rate, heat generated by heating wire. and sensor location were investigated to find optimized condition. Finally, the relation between sensor voltage through analog digital conversion(ADC) and flow rate in the sensor tube can be represented. Based on this study, static and dynamic characteristics of sensor tube can be used for design of mass flow controller.

  • Gouge-free tool-path generation is an important issue in mold & die machining and researches on cutter interference avoidance can be found in many articles. One of the various methods is construction of tool-offlet surface or cutter-location (CL) surface on which the cutter-center point (CL-point) locates. Provided that the CL surface is represented in a suitable form, cutter-interference avoidance can be performed without the burden of computing CL data for every cutter-contact (CC) point. In the paper, various methods of constructing a CL surface in the z-map form are presented, where z-map is a special form of discrete nonparametric representation in which the height values at grid points on the xy-plane are stored as a 2D array z[i,j].

  • Scinaia latifrons Howe occurs in rhodolith beds between 9 to 27 m depths at San Lorenzo channel, Gulf of California, Mexico. As very little was known about the morphometrics of this normally temperate species in a subtropical area, we investigated the phenological changes from December 1998 to December 1999. The gametophytic phase of the species was present from late February to late May, which represented a shorter time period to other known species in the genus. Our results suggested that two gametophytic cohorts develop over winter and early spring based on the size class structure of the frond height. Thalli became reproductively mature at a small size (1-2 cm in height) and all the plants were monoecious. Scinaia latifrons at the study location underwent allometric growth, indicated by the lack of correlation between size, width of the plants, or branching patterns.

  • This paper introduces a Web-based vibration analysis system for rotary-type refrigerator compressors. Concern for vibration reduction in compressors has been growing for many years. What is important in vibration reduction is to easily predict the vibration without using a physical compressor. The dynamic model of the compressor is represented as a multi-body dynamic system. Solving the dynamic model is run on a high-performance server. The interfaces of the system are accessible via Web browsers, such as Netscape or Explorer. Anyone who wants to analyze the vibration of the rotary compressor or share the results data can access the system over the Internet regardless of their OS, platform. or location.

  • The aim of the work is to present a new method of estimating the existence of a mass unbalance and mass unbalance under a crack on a rotating shaft. This is an advanced new method for the detection of a mass unbalance and a new way to estimate the position of it under crack influence. As the first step, the shaft is physically modelled with a finite element method and the dynamic mathematical model is derived by using the Hamilton principle; thus, the system is represented by various subsystems. The equation of motion of the shaft with a mass unbalance and a crack are established by adapting the local mass unbalance and the stiffness change. this is a reference system for the given system. Based on a model for transient behavior induced from vabrations measured at the bearings, an elementary Estimator is designed to detect mass unblance on the shaft. Using the Estimator, a bank of the Estimator is established to estimate the estimate the position of the mass unbalance and arranged at a certain location on the shaft. The informations for the given system are the measurements of bearing displacements and velocity.
