  • This paper describes the design and fabrication of a three-axis force sensor with three parallel plate structures(PPSs) for measuring force in a finger force measuring system for a spherical object catch. The three-axis force sensor is composed of a Fx force sensor, Fy force sensor and a Fz force sensor, and the elements of Fx force sensor and Fy force sensor are a parallel plate structure(PPS) respectively and Fz force sensor is two PPS. The three-axis force sensor was designed using FEM(Finite Element Method), and manufactured using strain-gages. The characteristics test of the three-axis force sensor was carried out. As a test results, the interference error of the three-axis force sensor was less than 1.32%, the repeatability error of each sensor was less than 0.04%, and the non-linearity was less than 0.04%.

  • Minimizing the backlash of gears and reducers is important for their proper and precise functioning. In this study, an automatic backlash measuring system was developed for the mass production and quality control of a military-grade reducer. The developed automatic backlash measurement system eliminates human error during the backlash measurement process. It also reduces the manufacturing time and digitizes the backlash number. The system was tested for an aircraft machine gun control reducer that required low-torque and high-precision conditions. The test results show that the torque range was 0.820-4.788 Nm. The maximum torque error is less than 0.231 N·m at 2.943 N·m, and 1.2 arcmin of the maximum backlash error with ± 0.3 arcmin of repeatability. The developed system satisfies all required conditions: torque of 1-3 Nm, torque accuracy within ± 0.5 N·m, and backlash accuracy of ± 3 arcmin.

  • In this paper, we accomplish uncertainty evaluation and performance test of the volumetric interferometer using two spherical wavefronts emitted from the ends of two single mode fibers. We verify that the volumetric interferometer has the volume uncertainty of 690nm through the error analysis and it has the resolution of 0.1 0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$ for x axis which is the same order of repeatability for x axis. Also, we obtain the systematic error of $1\mu\textrm{m}$ for $60\times 60\times 20 mm^3$ working volume using self-calibration with an artifact plate.

  • A improved method to measure the wavefront aberration of aspheric lens is described. In this study, which is a kind of lateral shearing interferometry, a sinusoidal diffraction grating is used for better quality of interferogram. Also, the grating is inclined to horizontal axis for obtaining the two orthogonal derivatives and minimizing moving error simultaneously. Measurement result shows that the repeatability is about 6 times better then that of previouse Ronchi Test.

  • Liner DC motors are widely used for servo-actuator, which would be applied for semiconductor equipments and precise machining systems. we have been developed linear DC motor with high speed, acceleration and position accuracy. From performance test, the position accuracy. From performance test, the position and repeatability accuracy were able to be controlled with 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and $\pm$1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively. The highest acceleration and speed were obtained 3 G and 2m/sec, respectively. Static thrust force was 270N, and then error was 25%.

  • This study deals with the TE (Transmission Error) of gear tooth by modifying a profile and lead of a surface of tooth. First, we experimentally confirmed that the TE is a synthesis of the sliding velocity between both gears. Since various types of TE appear in the experiments, we introduced definition of transmission error and the optimism design by modifying a surface parameters. The test stand's performance is then evaluated through a series of multiple torque transmission error tests. Comparisons are made between data recorded before and after the test stand's redesign, and subsequently repeatability studies are performed to verify the veracity of the measured data. Finally, the experimental results are compared to the analytical predictions of two different gear analysis programs.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric and thermal errors of the machine tools. Therefore, a key requirement for improving te machining accuracy and product quality is to reduce the geometric and thermal errors of machine tools. This study models geometric error for error analysis and develops on-machine measurement system by which the volumetric erors are measured. The geometric error is modeled using form shaping function(FSF) which is defined as the mathematical relationship between form shaping motion of machine tool and machined surface. The constant terms included in the error model are found from the measurement results of on-machine measurement system. The developed on-machine measurement system consists of the spherical ball artifact (SBA), the touch probe unit with a star type stylus, the thermal data logger and the personal computer. Experiments, performed with the developed measurement system, show that the system provides a high measuring accuracy, with repeatability of ${\pm}2{\mu}m$ in X, Y and Z directions.

  • In order to discuss the availability of hydrostatic guideways driven by the coreless linear motor to ultra precision machine tools, a prototype of guideway is designed and tested in this research. A coreless linear DC motor with the continuous force of 156 N and a laser scale with the resolution of 0.01 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ are used as the feeding system. The experiments are performed on the static stuffiness, motion accuracy, positioning accuracy, microstep response and variation of velocity. The guideway has the infinite axial stillness within 50 N of applied load, and by the motion error compensation method using the Active Controlled Capillary, 0.08 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of linear motion error and 0.1 arcsec of angular motion error are acquired. The guideway also has 0.21 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of positioning error and 0.09 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of repeatability, and it shows the stable response against the 0.01 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ resolution step command. The velocity variation of feeding system is less than 0.6 %. From these results, it is confirmed that the hydrostatic guideway driven by the coreless linear motor is very useful fur the ultra precision machine tools.

  • One of the major limitations of productivity and quality in metal cutting is the machining accuracy of machine tools. The machining accuracy is affected by geometric errors, thermally-induced errors, and the deterioration of the machine tools. Geometric and thermal errors of machine tools should be measured and compensated to manufacture high quality products. In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. This paper models of the thermal errors for error analysis and develops on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric error are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses and a designed spherical ball artifact (SBA). Experiments, performed with the developed measurement system, show that the system provides a high measuring accuracy, with repeatability of $\pm$2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in X, Y and Z directions. It is believed that the developed measurement system can be also applied to the machine tools with CNC controller. In addition, machining accuracy and product quality can be improved by using the developed measurement system when the spherical ball artifact is mounted on the modular fixture.
