  • The use of Compaction Grouting evolved in 1950's to correct structural settlement of buildings. Over the almost 50 years, the technology has been developed and is currently used in wide range of applications. Compaction Grouting, the injection of a very stiff, 'zero-slump' mortar grout under relatively high pressure, displaces and compacts soils. It can effectively repair natural or man-made soil strength deficiencies in variety of soil formations. Major applications of Compaction Grouting include densifying loose soils or fill voids caused by sinkholes, poorly compacted fills, broken utilities, improper dewatering, or soft ground tunneling excavation. Other applications include preventing liquefation, re-leveling settled structures, and using compaction grout bulbs as structural elements of minipiles or underpinning. In this paper, on the basis of the case history constructed in this year, a study has been performed to analyze the basic mechanism of the Compaction Grouting. Also, the effectiveness of the ground improvement and the bearing capacity of the Compaction Pile has been verified by the Cone Penetration Test(CPT) and Load Test. Relatively uniform Compaction grouting column could be maintained by planning the Quality Control in the course of grouting. And, the Quality Control Plan has been conceived using grout pressure, volume of grout and drilling depth.

  • Prepacked concrete has recently been used in the special constructions fields such as underwater concrete work, heavy-weight concrete work, underground structure work, partial repair works for damaged reinforced concrete structures. and polymer-modified mortars have been employed as grouting mortars for the prepacked concrete. The purpose of this study is to recommend the optimum mix design of polymer-modified grouting mortars for prepacked concrete. Polymer-modified mortars using SBR and EVA emulsions as admixture of grouting mortars for prepacked concrete are prepared with various mix proportions such as sand-binder ratio, fly ash replacement ratio, polymer-binder ratio. and tested for flowability, viscosity of grouting mortars, bleeding ratio, expansion ratio, flexural and compressive strengths of grouting mortars and compressive and tensile strengths of prepacked concretes. From the test results, it is apparent that polymer-modified mortars can be produced as grouting mortars when proper mix design is chosen. We can design the mix proportions of high strength mortars for prepacked concrete according to the control of mix design factors such as type of polymer, polymer-binder ratio, sand-binder ratio and fly ash replacement ratio. Water-binder ratio of plain mortars for a constant flowability value are in the ranges of 43% to 50%. SBR-modified mortar has a little water-binder ratios compared to those of plain mortar, however, EVA-modified mortar needs a high water-binder ratio due to a high viscosity of polymer dispersion. The expansion and bleeding ratios of grouting mortars are also controlled in the proper value ranges. Polymer-modified grouting mortars have good flexural. compressive and tensile strengths, are not affected with various properties with increasing fly ash replacement to cement and binder-sand ratio. In this study, SBR-modified grouting mortar with a polymer-binder ratio of 10% or less, a fly ash replacement of 10% to cement and a sand-binder ratio of 1.5 is recommended as a grouting mortar for prepacked concrete.

  • Dam and embankment are very important civil structures. Grouting is widely used to repair and maintain dam and embankment, and it is important to evaluate the effect of grouting for dam safety. The non-destructive method based on determination of wave velocity in the dam or embankment is effectively used to evaluate grouting effect because wave velocity is identical with stiffness and grouting increases local stiffness in a dam. In this paper, HWAW (Harmonic wavelet analysis of waves) method was applied to evaluate the grouting effect. HWAW method can determine two-dimensional shear wave velocity map with good spatial resolution and the shear velocity profile by the proposed method is sensitive to a variation of stiffness of target system. Through numerical simulation and field tests, the applicability of HWAW method in determining grouting effect is shown.

  • The sinkhole and leakage in dam core were detected at one of earth fill dams in Korea. The damage areas in the core of the dam were repaired by compaction grouting method. This study is to evaluate compaction grouting activity by in-situ and laboratory experiments before, during and after the remedial work. The intensive site investigation and geophysical survey were conducted during and after the compaction grouting work. The compaction grouting work was carried out for the damaged dam core between June 16 and August 24, 2000. The leakage reduction generally occurred in the core of the dam after the remedial work. The use of compaction grouting was considered the proper countermeasures for repairing the damaged dam. It shows that the loose or voided zones have been properly filled and the leakage has been reduced by about 96% of that before the treatment of the remedial work performed at dam core by compaction grouting.

  • Maintenance of structural and hydrological safety of the superannuated fill dam is very important subject on the viewpoint of disaster prevention. Mainly, the core of the superannuated fill dams have been damaged continuously by the various harmful external forces such as the typhoons, flash floods and earthquake, and these can be connected to the large scaled general dam failure. Therefore, the research on the repair, remediation and reinforcement of dam is necessary. In this study, the permeable grouting method for the remediation of fill dam was examined by the electrical resistivity survey and the change of permeability of core front. As a result, the permeable grouting method can be useful remediation method for the superannuated fill dam, the leakage from the core front decreased greatly before and after the construction of grouting. Furthermore, it can be said that the turbidity of fill dam may not be greatly increased by grouting.

  • Grouting method has been widely used for the ground improvement and stabilization: mostly to block or control the ground water in the early years and to improve the ground, repair the structure in recent years, ever increasing its use. Despite many advantages so far, the existing grouting method also has some shortcomings including uncertain permeation of grouting with gravity type if the voids between the soil particles are narrow, and problems due to the relaxation of the neighboring ground when injected using injection pressure. As an alternative, a vibration injection method with constant amplitude and frequency has been developed in recent years, with the vibration grouting being reported to have a permeability increasing effect of grout material compared with the positive pressure injection type. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to investigate the improvement effect of the vibration grouting that applies short-period vibration energy by varying vibration cycle, vibration time and ground conditions to evaluate the strength enhancing effect of grouting materials, expansion effect of grouting body, ground improvement effect of the grouting and the penetration characteristics of the rock joint. The findings of this study show the improved compressive strength of grout, expansion of grouting body and increased penetration rate, according to the vibration compared with non-vibration under the loose soil condition.

  • Dam slope RIM is a highly important contact interface where the main body and the base surface are connected. In general, when the grouting for the slope of the dam structure is designed, it is planned using limited data (drilling, geological map, etc.). This makes it very difficult to accurately consider the original ground characteristics of the slope RIM grouting target, In addition, when the grouting volume planned during the design is drilled and injected into the original ground where the waterstop is secured, there is a possibility that the original ground with the waterstop is disturbed and the effect of the waterstop is rather diminished. In order to overcome such problems, it is more suitable to first consider geological conditions and determine whether to perform optimal grouting on the original ground through on-site repair tests before performing RIM grouting. In this paper, to determine the grouting of the RIM unit, a pilot hole water pressure test was performed on the rock of the slope in the target section. The analysis shows grouting volume of 1 Lugeon or less, and the cement injection amount also shows the injection result of 1 kg/m or less. In this case, performing grouting is rather counterproductive. This result can be evaluated through a rock of which some degree of order of mass is secured, as it is a dam design standard of 1 Lugeon or less when analyzed, using the results of visual observation and geological map creation during slope cutting. Therefore, in conclusion, it is preferable to make the decision for using RIM grouting on the slope of the dam body structure, based on 1 Lugeon in a rock state, and the cement injection amount also at 1 kg/m.

  • Epoxy resins are gradually becoming some of the most important and versatile polymers in modem civil engineering. Because epoxy resins have some unigue properties, such as toughness, versatility of viscosity and curing conditions, good handling characteristics, high adhesive strength, inertness, low shrinkage compared to most other thermo-setting resins and concrete, and resistance to chemicals, they have found many applications in construction castings, repair materials, road or bridge deck pavements, coatings, and as structural or non structural adhesives. In this applications, epoxy resins are widely used for polymer concretes, grouting materials, injection glues, and sealants. In this paper, characteristics of deformation of repair material after repaired have been investigated by viscosity of repair material and the width of crack. It is believed that flexural strength of epoxy resin with low viscosity is high because tensile strength is high and elongation at break is low, fracture energy is low.

  • Recently, many deformations in tunnel such as crack and leakage were occulted. Specially, the defects of tunnel lining have been a serious problem in safety and stability many repair works for maintenance in tunnel have been carried out. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the structural cracking for countermeasure in deformed tunnel and to investigate on the characteristics of lining system and the soundness of tunnel. In this study model tests for tunnel lining were carried out using test apparatus and centrifuge, In the direct loading test, the prototype was Kyungbu high-speed railway tunnel and the scale is 1/10, and lining models were made of concrete. Test conditions included load conditions such as direction, shape and type, lining conditions such as single and double lining, thickness, and reinforcement. In centrifuge model test, the prototype was Seoul subway tunnel and the scale is 1/100, and lining models were made of aluminum and hydrostone. Test conditions included tunnel defects such as thickness shortage. behind cavity and longitudinal cracks, reinforcement methods such as epoxy, grouting and carbon sheet. From these model tests , the characteristics of deformation and failure for tunnel lining were estimated, and the structural behaviors of deformed lining and the effects of repair and reinforcement for tunnel lining were researched.
